And as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the officer of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

Loquentibus autem illis ad populum, supervenerunt sacerdotes, et magistratus templi, et sadducæi,

Before they had finished speaking to the crowd, they were interrupted by the chief priests, the temple superintendent, and the Sadducees.

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead:

dolentes quod docerent populum, et annuntiarent in Jesu resurrectionem ex mortuis:
2
These, indignant at their teaching the multitude and proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus from the dead,

And they laid hands upon them, and put them in hold till the next day; for it was now evening.

et injecerunt in eos manus, et posuerunt eos in custodiam in crastinum: erat enim jam vespera.

laid hands on them, and put them in prison (for it was already evening) until the next day.

But many of them who had heard the word, believed; and the number of the men was made five thousand.

Multi autem eorum qui audierant verbum, crediderunt: et factus est numerus virorum quinque millia.

(Meanwhile, many of those who had listened to their preaching had joined the believers, so that their numbers had now risen to five thousand men.)

And it came to pass on the morrow, that their princes, and ancients, and scribes, were gathered together in Jerusalem;

Factum est autem in crastinum, ut congregarentur principes eorum, et seniores, et scribæ, in Jerusalem:

On the next day, there was a gathering of the rulers and elders and scribes in Jerusalem;

And Annas the high priest, and Caiphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest.

et Annas princeps sacerdotum, et Caiphas, et Joannes, et Alexander, et quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali.

the high priest Annas was there, and Caiphas, and John, and Alexander, and all those who belonged to the high-priestly family.

And setting them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, have you done this?

Et statuentes eos in medio, interrogabant: In qua virtute, aut in quo nomine fecistis hoc vos?

And they had Peter and John brought into their presence, and asked them, By what power, in whose name, have such men as you done this?

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people, and ancients, hear:

Tunc repletus Spiritu Sancto Petrus, dixit ad eos: Principes populi, et seniores, audite:

Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, and said to them, Rulers of the people, elders of Israel, listen to me.

If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made whole:
9
si nos hodie dijudicamur in benefacto hominis infirmi, in quo iste salvus factus est,
9
If it is over kindness done to a cripple, and the means by which he has been restored, that we are called in question,
10
Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him this man standeth here before you whole.

notum sit omnibus vobis, et omni plebi Israël, quia in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi Nazareni, quem vos crucifixistis, quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis, in hoc iste astat coram vobis sanus.

here is news for you and for the whole people of Israel. You crucified Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, and God raised him from the dead; it is through his name that this man stands before you restored.

This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner.

Hic est lapis qui reprobatus est a vobis ædificantibus, qui factus est in caput anguli:

He is that stone, rejected by you, the builders, that has become the chief stone at the corner.
12
Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved.

et non est in alio aliquo salus. Nec enim aliud nomen est sub cælo datum hominibus, in quo oporteat nos salvos fieri.

Salvation is not to be found elsewhere; this alone of all the names under heaven has been appointed to men as the one by which we must needs be saved.
13
Now seeing the constancy of Peter and of John, understanding that they were illiterate and ignorant men, they wondered; and they knew them that they had been with Jesus.

Videntes autem Petri constantiam, et Joannis, comperto quod homines essent sine litteris, et idiotæ, admirabantur, et cognoscebant eos quoniam cum Jesu fuerant:

Seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and discovering that they were simple men, without learning, they were astonished, and recognized them now as having been in Jesus’ company.
14
Seeing the man also who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
14
hominem quoque videntes stantem cum eis, qui curatus fuerat, nihil poterant contradicere.

They could find no answer to make, with the man who had been healed standing there beside them;
15
But they commanded them to go aside out of the council; and they conferred among themselves,

Jusserunt autem eos foras extra concilium secedere: et conferebant ad invicem,
15
so they ordered them out of the council-chamber, and conferred together.
16
Saying: What shall we do to these men? for indeed a known miracle hath been done by them, to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: it is manifest, and we cannot deny it.

dicentes: Quid faciemus hominibus istis? quoniam quidem notum signum factum est per eos omnibus habitantibus Jerusalem: manifestum est, et non possumus negare.

What are we to do with these men? they asked. It is commonly known among all the people of Jerusalem that a notable miracle has been done by their means, and we are powerless to deny it.
17
But that it may be no farther spread among the people, let us threaten them that they speak no more in this name to any man.

Sed ne amplius divulgetur in populum, comminemur eis ne ultra loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum.
17
But the news must not spread any further; we must deter them by threats from preaching to anybody in this man’s name again.
18
And calling them, they charged them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus.

Et vocantes eos, denuntiaverunt ne omnino loquerentur neque docerent in nomine Jesu.
18
So they called them in, and warned them not to utter a word or give any teaching in the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John answering, said to them: If it be just in the sight of God, to hear you rather than God, judge ye.
19
Petrus vero et Joannes respondentes, dixerunt ad eos: Si justum est in conspectu Dei vos potius audire quam Deum, judicate.
19
At this, Peter and John answered them, Judge for yourselves whether it would be right for us, in the sight of God, to listen to your voice instead of God’s.
20
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
20
Non enim possumus quæ vidimus et audivimus non loqui.
20
It is impossible for us to refrain from speaking of what we have seen and heard.
21
But they threatening, sent them away, not finding how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified what had been done, in that which had come to pass.

At illi comminantes dimiserunt eos, non invenientes quomodo punirent eos propter populum: quia omnes clarificabant id quod factum fuerat in eo quod acciderat.

And they, after threatening them further, let them go; they could find no means of punishing them, because all the people were exclaiming at the astonishing circumstances of what had befallen;

For the man was above forty years old, in whom that miraculous cure had been wrought.
22
Annorum enim erat amplius quadraginta homo, in quo factum fuerat signum istud sanitatis.
22
the man in whom this miracle of healing had taken place was more than forty years old.

And being let go, they came to their own company, and related all that the chief priests and ancients had said to them.

Dimissi autem venerunt ad suos, et annuntiaverunt eis quanta ad eos principes sacerdotum et seniores dixissent.

Now that they were set free, they went back to their company, and told them all the chief priests and elders had said.
24
Who having heard it, with one accord lifted up their voice to God, and said: Lord, thou art he that didst make heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them.
24
Qui cum audissent, unanimiter levaverunt vocem ad Deum, et dixerunt: Domine, tu es qui fecisti cælum et terram, mare et omnia quæ in eis sunt:

And they, when they heard it, uttered prayer to God with one accord; Ruler of all, thou art the maker of heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them.
25
Who, by the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of our father David, thy servant, hast said: Why did the Gentiles rage, and the people meditate vain things?
25
qui Spiritu Sancto per os patris nostri David pueri tui dixisti: Quare fremuerunt gentes, et populi meditati sunt inania?
25
Thou hast said through thy Holy Spirit, by the lips of thy servant David, our father, What means this turmoil among the nations; why do the peoples cherish vain dreams?

The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes assembled together against the Lord and his Christ.

Astiterunt reges terræ, et principes convenerunt in unum adversus Dominum, et adversus Christum ejus.

See how the kings of the earth stand in array, how its rulers make common cause, against the Lord and his Christ.
27
For of a truth there assembled together in this city against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,
27
Convenerunt enim vere in civitate ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Jesum, quem unxisti, Herodes et Pontius Pilatus, cum gentibus et populis Israël,
27
True enough, in this city of ours, Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel to aid them, made common cause against thy holy servant Jesus,
28
To do what thy hand and thy counsel decreed to be done.
28
facere quæ manus tua et consilium tuum decreverunt fieri.
28
so accomplishing all that thy power and wisdom had decreed.
29
And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all confidence they may speak thy word,
29
Et nunc, Domine, respice in minas eorum, et da servis tuis cum omni fiducia loqui verbum tuum,
29
Look down upon their threats, Lord, now as of old; enable thy servants to preach thy word confidently,
30
By stretching forth thy hand to cures, and signs, and wonders to be done by the name of thy holy Son Jesus.

in eo quod manum tuam extendas ad sanitates, et signa, et prodigia fieri per nomen sancti filii tui Jesu.
30
by stretching out thy hand to heal; and let signs and miracles be performed in the name of Jesus, thy holy Son.

And when they had prayed, the place was moved wherein they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the word of God with confidence.

Et cum orassent, motus est locus in quo erant congregati: et repleti sunt omnes Spiritu Sancto, et loquebantur verbum Dei cum fiducia.

When they had finished praying, the place in which they had gathered rocked to and fro, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to preach the word of God with confidence.

And the multitude of believers had but one heart and one soul: neither did any one say that aught of the things which he possessed, was his own; but all things were common unto them.

Multitudinis autem credentium erat cor unum et anima una: nec quisquam eorum quæ possidebat, aliquid suum esse dicebat, sed erant illis omnia communia.

There was one heart and soul in all the company of believers; none of them called any of his possessions his own, everything was shared in common.

And with great power did the apostles give testimony of the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord; and great grace was in them all.

Et virtute magna reddebant Apostoli testimonium resurrectionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri: et gratia magna erat in omnibus illis.

Great was the power with which the apostles testified to the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and great was the grace that rested on them all.

For neither was there any one needy among them. For as many as were owners of lands or houses, sold them, and brought the price of the things they sold,

Neque enim quisquam egens erat inter illos. Quotquot enim possessores agrorum aut domorum erant, vendentes afferebant pretia eorum quæ vendebant,

None of them was destitute; all those who owned farms or houses used to sell them, and bring the price of what they had sold
35
And laid it down before the feet of the apostles. And distribution was made to every one, according as he had need.

et ponebant ante pedes Apostolorum. Dividebatur autem singulis prout cuique opus erat.

to lay it at the apostles’ feet, so that each could have what share of it he needed.

And Joseph, who, by the apostles, was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, by interpretation, The son of consolation,) a Levite, a Cyprian born,

Joseph autem, qui cognominatus est Barnabas ab Apostolis (quod est interpretatum, Filius consolationis), Levites, Cyprius genere,

There was a Levite called Joseph, a Cypriot by birth, to whom the apostles gave the fresh name of Barnabas, which means, the man of encouragement;

Having land, sold it, and brought the price, and laid it at the feet of the apostles.

cum haberet agrum, vendidit eum, et attulit pretium, et posuit ante pedes Apostolorum.
37
he had an estate, which he sold, and brought the purchase-money to lay it at the apostles’ feet.
