And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.

Post hæc autem designavit Dominus et alios septuaginta duos: et misit illos binos ante faciem suam in omnem civitatem et locum, quo erat ipse venturus.

After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them before him, two and two, into all the cities and villages he himself was to visit.

And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.

Et dicebat illis: Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci. Rogate ergo dominum messis ut mittat operarios in messem suam.

The harvest, he told them, is plentiful enough, but the labourers are few; you must ask the Lord to whom the harvest belongs to send labourers out for the harvesting.

Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.

Ite: ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos.
3
Go then, and remember, I am sending you out to be like lambs among wolves.
4
Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.

Nolite portare sacculum, neque peram, neque calceamenta, et neminem per viam salutaveritis.

You are not to carry purse, or wallet, or shoes; you are to give no one greeting on your way.

Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.

In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primum dicite: Pax huic domui:

When you enter a house, say first of all, Peace be to this house;

And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.

et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet super illum pax vestra: sin autem, ad vos revertetur.

and if those who dwell there are men of good will, your good wishes shall come down upon it; if not, they will come back to you the way they went.

And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.

In eadem autem domo manete, edentes et bibentes quæ apud illos sunt: dignus est enim operarius mercede sua. Nolite transire de domo in domum.

Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have to give you; the labourer has a right to his maintenance; do not move from one house to another.

And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.

Et in quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate quæ apponuntur vobis:

When you enter a city, and they make you welcome, be content to eat the fare they offer you:

And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

et curate infirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis: Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei.

and heal those who are sick there; and tell them, The kingdom of God is close upon you.

But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, going forth into the streets thereof, say:

In quamcumque autem civitatem intraveritis, et non susceperint vos, exeuntes in plateas ejus, dicite:

But if you enter a city where they will not make you welcome, go out into their streets, and say,

Even the very dust of your city that cleaveth to us, we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God is at hand.

Etiam pulverem, qui adhæsit nobis de civitate vestra, extergimus in vos: tamen hoc scitote, quia appropinquavit regnum Dei.

We brush off in your faces the very dust from your city that has clung to our feet; and be sure of this, the kingdom of God is close at hand.
12
I say to you, it shall be more tolerable at that day for Sodom, than for that city.

Dico vobis, quia Sodomis in die illa remissius erit, quam illi civitati.
12
I tell you, it shall go less hard with Sodom at the day of judgement, than with that city.
13
Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida. For if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Væ tibi Corozain! væ tibi Bethsaida! quia si in Tyro et Sidone factæ fuissent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio et cinere sedentes pœniterent.

Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida! Tyre and Sidon would have repented long ago, humbling themselves with sackcloth and ashes, if the miracles done in you had been done there instead.

But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

Verumtamen Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in judicio, quam vobis.

And indeed, it shall go less hard with Tyre and Sidon at the judgement, than with you.
15
And thou, Capharnaum, which art exalted unto heaven, thou shalt be thrust down to hell.

Et tu Capharnaum, usque ad cælum exaltata, usque ad infernum demergeris.

And thou, Capharnaum, dost thou hope to be lifted up high as heaven? Thou shalt be brought low as hell.
16
He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.
16
Qui vos audit, me audit: et qui vos spernit, me spernit. Qui autem me spernit, spernit eum qui misit me.
16
He who listens to you, listens to me; he who despises you, despises me; and he who despises me, despises him that sent me.
17
And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying: Lord, the devils also are subject to us in thy name.

Reversi sunt autem septuaginta duo cum gaudio, dicentes: Domine, etiam dæmonia subjiciuntur nobis in nomine tuo.

And the seventy-two disciples came back full of rejoicing; Lord, they said, even the devils are made subject to us through thy name.

And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven.

Et ait illis: Videbam Satanam sicut fulgor de cælo cadentem.

He said to them, I watched, while Satan was cast down like a lightning-flash from heaven.

Behold, I have given you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you.

Ecce dedi vobis potestatem calcandi supra serpentes, et scorpiones, et super omnem virtutem inimici: et nihil vobis nocebit.

Behold, I have given you the right to trample on snakes and scorpions, and all the power of the enemy, and take no hurt from it.
20
But yet rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven.
20
Verumtamen in hoc nolite gaudere quia spiritus vobis subjiciuntur: gaudete autem, quod nomina vestra scripta sunt in cælis.

But you, instead of rejoicing that the devils are made subject to you, should be rejoicing that your names are enrolled in heaven.
21
In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father, for so it hath seemed good in thy sight.

In ipsa hora exsultavit Spiritu Sancto, et dixit: Confiteor tibi Pater, Domine cæli et terræ, quod abscondisti hæc a sapientibus et prudentibus, et revelasti ea parvulis. Etiam Pater: quoniam sic placuit ante te.

At this time, Jesus was filled with gladness by the Holy Spirit, and said, O Father, who art Lord of heaven and earth, I give thee praise that thou hast hidden all this from the wise and the prudent, and revealed it to little children. Be it so, Lord, since this finds favour in thy sight.

All things are delivered to me by my Father; and no one knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and to whom the Son will reveal him.

Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo. Et nemo scit quis sit Filius, nisi Pater: et quis sit Pater, nisi Filius, et cui voluerit Filius revelare.

My Father has entrusted everything into my hands; none knows what the Son is, except the Father, and none knows what the Father is, except the Son, and those to whom it is the Son’s good pleasure to reveal him.

And turning to his disciples, he said: Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see.

Et conversus ad discipulos suos, dixit: Beati oculi qui vident quæ vos videtis.

Then, turning to his own disciples, he said, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see;

For I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.

Dico enim vobis quod multi prophetæ et reges voluerunt videre quæ vos videtis, et non viderunt: et audire quæ auditis, et non audierunt.

I tell you, there have been many prophets and kings who have longed to see what you see, and never saw it, to hear what you hear, and never heard it.

And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him, and saying, Master, what must I do to possess eternal life?

Et ecce quidam legisperitus surrexit tentans illum, et dicens: Magister, quid faciendo vitam æternam possidebo?

It happened once that a lawyer rose up, trying to put him to the test; Master, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

But he said to him: What is written in the law? how readest thou?
26
At ille dixit ad eum: In lege quid scriptum est? quomodo legis?
26
Jesus asked him, What is it that is written in the law? What is thy reading of it?
27
He answering, said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbour as thyself.

Ille respondens dixit: Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, et ex omnibus virtutibus tuis, et ex omni mente tua: et proximum tuum sicut teipsum.

And he answered, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with the love of thy whole heart, and thy whole soul, and thy whole strength, and thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

And he said to him: Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

Dixitque illi: Recte respondisti: hoc fac, et vives.

Thou hast answered right, he told him; do this, and thou shalt find life.

But he willing to justify himself, said to Jesus: And who is my neighbour?

Ille autem volens justificare seipsum, dixit ad Jesum: Et quis est meus proximus?

But he, to prove himself blameless, asked, And who is my neighbour?
30
And Jesus answering, said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who also stripped him, and having wounded him went away, leaving him half dead.

Suscipiens autem Jesus, dixit: Homo quidam descendebat ab Jerusalem in Jericho, et incidit in latrones, qui etiam despoliaverunt eum: et plagis impositis abierunt semivivo relicto.

Jesus gave him his answer; A man who was on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho fell in with robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and went off leaving him half dead.

And it chanced, that a certain priest went down the same way: and seeing him, passed by.

Accidit autem ut sacerdos quidam descenderet eadem via: et viso illo præterivit.

And a priest, who chanced to be going down by the same road, saw him there and passed by on the other side.

In like manner also a Levite, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by.

Similiter et Levita, cum esset secus locum, et videret eum, pertransiit.

And a Levite who came there saw him, and passed by on the other side.

But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him; and seeing him, was moved with compassion.

Samaritanus autem quidam iter faciens, venit secus eum: et videns eum, misericordia motus est.

But a certain Samaritan, who was on his travels, saw him and took pity at the sight;

And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

Et appropians alligavit vulnera ejus, infundens oleum et vinum: et imponens illum in jumentum suum, duxit in stabulum, et curam ejus egit.

he went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine into them, and so mounted him upon his own beast and brought him to an inn, where he took care of him.

And the next day he took out two pence, and gave to the host, and said: Take care of him; and whatsoever thou shalt spend over and above, I, at my return, will repay thee.

Et altera die protulit duos denarios, et dedit stabulario, et ait: Curam illius habe: et quodcumque supererogaveris, ego cum rediero reddam tibi.

And next day he took out two silver pieces, which he gave to the inn-keeper, and said, Take care of him, and on my way home I will give thee whatever else is owing to thee for thy pains.

Which of these three, in thy opinion, was neighbour to him that fell among the robbers?

Quis horum trium videtur tibi proximus fuisse illi, qui incidit in latrones?

Which of these, thinkest thou, proved himself a neighbour to the man who had fallen in with robbers?

But he said: He that shewed mercy to him. And Jesus said to him: Go, and do thou in like manner.

At ille dixit: Qui fecit misericordiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus: Vade, et tu fac similiter.

And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then Jesus said, Go thy way, and do thou likewise.

Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house.

Factum est autem, dum irent, et ipse intravit in quoddam castellum: et mulier quædam, Martha nomine, excepit illum in domum suam,

In one of the villages he entered during his journey, a woman called Martha entertained him in her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord’s feet, heard his word.
39
et huic erat soror nomine Maria, quæ etiam sedens secus pedes Domini, audiebat verbum illius.
39
She had a sister called Mary; and Mary took her place at the Lord’s feet, and listened to his words.
40
But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.
40
Martha autem satagebat circa frequens ministerium: quæ stetit, et ait: Domine, non est tibi curæ quod soror mea reliquit me solam ministrare? dic ergo illi ut me adjuvet.

Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs; so she came to his side, and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me.

And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things:

Et respondens dixit illi Dominus: Martha, Martha, sollicita es, et turbaris erga plurima,

Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast!
42
But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.

porro unum est necessarium. Maria optimam partem elegit, quæ non auferetur ab ea.

But only one thing is necessary; and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all, that which shall never be taken away from her.
