Chapter 17

Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart:
1
Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum:
1
Six days afterwards Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John with him, and led them up on to a high mountain where they were alone.
2
And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow.
2
2
And he was transfigured in their presence, his face shining like the sun, and his garments becoming white as snow;
3
And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him.
3
3
and all at once they had sight of Moses and Elias conversing with him.
4
And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
4
4
Then Peter said aloud to Jesus, Lord, it is well that we should be here; if it pleases thee, let us make three arbours in this place, one for thee, one for Moses and one for Elias.
5
And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him.
5
Adhuc eo loquente, ecce nubes lucida obumbravit eos.
5
Even before he had finished speaking, a shining cloud overshadowed them. And now, there was a voice which said to them out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; to him, then, listen.
6
And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face, and were very much afraid.
6
Et audientes discipuli ceciderunt in faciem suam, et timuerunt valde.
6
The disciples, when they heard it, fell on their faces, overcome with fear;
7
And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not.
7
Et accessit Jesus, et tetigit eos: dixitque eis: Surgite, et nolite timere.
7
but Jesus came near and roused them with his touch; Arise, he said, do not be afraid.
8
And they lifting up their eyes saw no one but only Jesus.
8
Levantes autem oculos suos, neminem viderunt, nisi solum Jesum.
8
And they lifted up their eyes, and saw no man there but Jesus only.
9
And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead.
9
Et descendentibus illis de monte, præcepit eis Jesus, dicens: Nemini dixeritis visionem, donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat.
9
And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus warned them, Do not tell anybody of what you have seen, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.
10
And his disciples asked him, saying: Why then do the scribes say that Elias must come first?
10
Et interrogaverunt eum discipuli, dicentes: Quid ergo scribæ dicunt, quod Eliam oporteat primum venire?
10
And his disciples asked him, Tell us, why is it that the scribes say Elias must come before Christ?
11
But he answering, said to them: Elias indeed shall come, and restore all things.
11
At ille respondens, ait eis: Elias quidem venturus est, et restituet omnia.
11
He answered, Elias must needs come and restore all things as they were;
12
But I say to you, that Elias is already come, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind. So also the Son of man shall suffer from them.
12
12
but I tell you this, that Elias has come already, and they did not recognize him, but misused him at their pleasure, just as the Son of Man is to suffer at their hands.
13
Then the disciples understood, that he had spoken to them of John the Baptist.
13
Tunc intellexerunt discipuli, quia de Joanne Baptista dixisset eis.
13
Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them of John the Baptist.
14
And when he was come to the multitude, there came to him a man falling down on his knees before him, saying: Lord, have pity on my son, for he is a lunatic, and suffereth much: for he falleth often into the fire, and often into the water.
14
14
When they reached the multitude, a man came up and knelt before him: Lord, he said, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic, and in great affliction; he will often throw himself into the fire, and often into water.
15
And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
15
15
I brought him here to thy disciples, but they have not been able to cure him.
16
Then Jesus answered and said: O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
16
Respondens autem Jesus, ait: O generatio incredula, et perversa, quousque ero vobiscum? usquequo patiar vos? Afferte huc illum ad me.
16
Jesus answered, Ah, faithless and misguided generation, how long must I be with you, how long must I bear with you? Bring him here before me.
17
And Jesus rebuked him, and the devil went out of him, and the child was cured from that hour.
17
17
And Jesus checked him with a word, and the devil came out of him; and from that hour the boy was cured.
18
Then came the disciples to Jesus secretly, and said: Why could not we cast him out?
18
18
Afterwards, when they were alone, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Why was it that we could not cast it out?
19
Jesus said to them: Because of your unbelief. For, amen I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove from hence hither, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.
19
Dixit illis Jesus: Propter incredulitatem vestram. Amen quippe dico vobis, si habueritis fidem sicut granum sinapis, dicetis monti huic: Transi hinc illuc, et transibit, et nihil impossibile erit vobis.
19
Jesus said to them, Because you had no faith. I promise you, if you have faith, though it be but like a grain of mustard seed, you have only to say to this mountain, Remove from this place to that, and it will remove; nothing will be impossible to you.
20
But this kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting.
20
20
But there is no way of casting out such spirits as this except by prayer and fasting.
21
And when they abode together in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
21
Conversantibus autem eis in Galilæa, dixit illis Jesus: Filius hominis tradendus est in manus hominum:
21
While they were still together in Galilee, Jesus told them, The Son of Man is to be given up into the hands of men.
22
And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise again. And they were troubled exceedingly.
22
et occident eum, et tertia die resurget. Et contristati sunt vehementer.
22
They will put him to death, and he will rise again on the third day. And they were overcome with sorrow.
23
And when they were come to Capharnaum, they that received the didrachmas, came to Peter and said to him: Doth not your master pay the didrachmas?
23
23
And when they reached Capharnaum, the collectors of the Temple pence approached Peter, and asked, Does not your master pay the Temple pence?
24
He said: Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying: What is thy opinion, Simon? The kings of the earth, of whom do they receive tribute or custom? of their own children, or of strangers?
24
Ait: Etiam. Et cum intrasset in domum, prævenit eum Jesus, dicens: Quid tibi videtur Simon? reges terræ a quibus accipiunt tributum vel censum? a filiis suis, an ab alienis?
24
Yes, he said. Soon afterwards he came into the house, and Jesus forestalled him; Simon, he said, tell us what thou thinkest; on whom do earthly kings impose customs and taxes, on their own sons, or on strangers?
25
And he said: Of strangers. Jesus said to him: Then the children are free.
25
Et ille dixit: Ab alienis. Dixit illi Jesus: Ergo liberi sunt filii.
25
On strangers, Peter told him; and Jesus said to him, Why then, the children go free.
26
But that we may not scandalize them, go to the sea, and cast in a hook: and that fish which shall first come up, take: and when thou hast opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater: take that, and give it to them for me and thee.
26
26
But we will not hurt their consciences; go down to the sea, and cast thy hook; take out the first fish thou drawest up, and when thou hast opened its mouth thou wilt find a silver coin there; with this make payment to them for me and for thyself.
