Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti: tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos,

When they were near Jerusalem, and had reached Bethphage, which is close to mount Olivet, Jesus sent two of his disciples on an errand;

And when they drew nigh to Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto mount Olivet, then Jesus sent two disciples,

dicens eis: Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea: solvite, et adducite mihi:

Go into the village that faces you, he told them, and the first thing you will find there will be a she-ass tethered, and a foal at her side; untie them and bring them to me.

Saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you, and immediately you shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them and bring them to me.
3
et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet: et confestim dimittet eos.

And if anyone speaks to you about it, tell him, The Lord has need of them, and he will let you have them without more ado.

And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye, that the Lord hath need of them: and forthwith he will let them go.

Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem:

All this was so ordained, to fulfil the word spoken by the prophet:

Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

Dicite filiæ Sion: Ecce rex tuus venit tibi mansuetus, sedens super asinam, et pullum filium subjugalis.

Tell the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy king is coming to thee, humbly, riding on an ass, on a colt whose mother has borne the yoke.

Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy king cometh to thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke.

Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus.

The disciples went and did as Jesus told them;

And the disciples going, did as Jesus commanded them.

Et adduxerunt asinam, et pullum: et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua, et eum desuper sedere fecerunt.

they brought the she-ass and its colt, and saddled them with their garments, and bade Jesus mount.

And they brought the ass and the colt, and laid their garments upon them, and made him sit thereon.

Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via: alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus, et sternebant in via:
8
Most of the multitude spread their garments along the way, while others strewed the way with branches cut down from the trees.

And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees, and strewed them in the way:
9
turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant, et quæ sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes: Hosanna filio David: benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini: hosanna in altissimis.

And the multitudes that went before him and that followed after him cried aloud, Hosanna for the son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in heaven above.

And the multitudes that went before and that followed, cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Et cum intrasset Jerosolymam, commota est universa civitas, dicens: Quis est hic?

When he reached Jerusalem, the whole city was in a stir; Who is this? they asked.

And when he was come into Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying: Who is this?

Populi autem dicebant: Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ.

And the multitude answered, This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth, in Galilee.

And the people said: This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee.

Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei, et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit:

Then Jesus went into the temple of God, and drove out from it all those who sold and bought there, and overthrew the tables of the bankers, and the chairs of the pigeon-sellers;

And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the chairs of them that sold doves:

et dicit eis: Scriptum est: Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur: vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum.

It is written, he told them, My house shall be known for a house of prayer, and you have made it into a den of thieves.

And he saith to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.

Et accesserunt ad eum cæci, et claudi in templo: et sanavit eos.

And there were blind and lame men who came up to him in the temple, and he healed them there.
14
And there came to him the blind and the lame in the temple; and he healed them.
15
Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes: Hosanna filio David: indignati sunt,

The chief priests and scribes saw the miracles which he did, and the boys that cried aloud in the temple, Hosanna for the son of David, and they were greatly angered at it.

And the chief priests and scribes, seeing the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying: Hosanna to the son of David; were moved with indignation,
16
et dixerunt ei: Audis quid isti dicunt? Jesus autem dixit eis: Utique. Numquam legistis: Quia ex ore infantium et lactentium perfecisti laudem?

Dost thou hear what these are saying? they asked. Yes, Jesus said to them, but have you never read the words, Thou hast made the lips of children, of infants at the breast, vocal with praise?

And said to him: Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yea, have you never read: Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam: ibique mansit.
17
So he left them, and went out of the city to Bethany, where he made his lodging.As he was returning to the city at daybreak, he was hungry:

And leaving them, he went out of the city into Bethania, and remained there.

Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit.
18
and, seeing a fig-tree by the road-side, he went up to it, and found nothing but leaves on it.
18
And in the morning, returning into the city, he was hungry.

Et videns fici arborem unam secus viam, venit ad eam: et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum, et ait illi: Numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum. Et arefacta est continuo ficulnea.

And he said to it, Let no fruit ever grow on thee hereafter; whereupon the fig-tree withered away.

And seeing a certain fig tree by the way side, he came to it, and found nothing on it but leaves only, and he saith to it: May no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And immediately the fig tree withered away.

Et videntes discipuli, mirati sunt, dicentes: Quomodo continuo aruit?
20
His disciples were amazed when they saw it; How suddenly it has withered away! they said.

And the disciples seeing it wondered, saying: How is it presently withered away?

Respondens autem Jesus, ait eis: Amen dico vobis, si habueritis fidem, et non hæsitaveritis, non solum de ficulnea facietis, sed et si monti huic dixeritis: Tolle, et jacta te in mare, fiet.

Jesus answered them, I promise you, if you have faith, and do not hesitate, you will be able to do more than I have done over the fig-tree; if you say to this mountain, Remove, and be cast into the sea, it will come about.

And Jesus answering, said to them: Amen, I say to you, if you shall have faith, and stagger not, not only this of the fig tree shall you do, but also if you shall say to this mountain, Take up and cast thyself into the sea, it shall be done.

Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis.
22
If you will only believe, every gift you ask for in your prayer will be granted.

And all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive.

Et cum venisset in templum, accesserunt ad eum docentem principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, dicentes: In qua potestate hæc facis? et quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem?

Afterwards he came into the temple; and while he was teaching there, the chief priests and elders approached him, asking, What is the authority by which thou doest these things, and who gave thee this authority?

And when he was come into the temple, there came to him, as he was teaching, the chief priests and ancients of the people, saying: By what authority dost thou these things? and who hath given thee this authority?
24
Respondens Jesus dixit eis: Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem: quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio.

Jesus answered them, I too have a question to ask; if you can tell me the answer, I will tell you in return what is the authority by which I do these things.

Jesus answering, said to them: I also will ask you one word, which if you shall tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

Baptismus Joannis unde erat? e cælo, an ex hominibus? At illi cogitabant inter se, dicentes:

Whence did John’s baptism come, from heaven or from men? Whereupon they cast about in their minds;

The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven or from men? But they thought within themselves, saying:

Si dixerimus, e cælo, dicet nobis: Quare ergo non credidistis illi? Si autem dixerimus, ex hominibus, timemus turbam: omnes enim habebant Joannem sicut prophetam.

If we tell him it was from heaven, they said, he will ask us, Then why did you not believe him? And if we say it was from men, we have reason to be afraid of the people; they all look upon John as a prophet.

If we shall say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him? But if we shall say, from men, we are afraid of the multitude: for all held John as a prophet.
27
Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt: Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse: Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio.

And they answered Jesus, We cannot tell. He, in his turn, said, And you will not learn from me what is the authority by which I do these things.

And answering Jesus, they said: We know not. He also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Quid autem vobis videtur? Homo quidam habebat duos filios, et accedens ad primum, dixit: Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea mea.

But tell me what you think; there was a man who had two sons, and when he went up to the first, and said, Away with thee, my son, and work in my vineyard to-day,

But what think you? A certain man had two sons; and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Ille autem respondens, ait: Nolo. Postea autem, pœnitentia motus, abiit.

he answered; Not I, but he relented afterwards and went.
29
And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went.

Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens, ait: Eo, domine, et non ivit:

Then he went up to the other, and said the like to him; and his answer was, I will, sir; but he did not go.
30
And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering, said: I go, Sir; and he went not.

quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris? Dicunt ei: Primus. Dicit illis Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei.

Which of the two carried out his father’s will? The first, they said. And Jesus said to them, Believe me, the publicans and the harlots are further on the road to God’s kingdom than you.

Which of the two did the father’s will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you.

Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiæ, et non credidistis ei: publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei: vos autem videntes nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei.

John came among you following all due observance, but could win no belief from you; the publicans believed him, and the harlots, but even when you saw that, you would not relent, and believe him.

For John came to you in the way of justice, and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.

Aliam parabolam audite: Homo erat paterfamilias, qui plantavit vineam, et sepem circumdedit ei, et fodit in ea torcular, et ædificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.

Listen to another parable. There was a rich man who planted a vineyard; he walled it in, and dug a wine-press and built a tower in it, and then let it out to some vine-dressers, while he went on his travels.

Hear ye another parable. There was a man an householder, who planted a vineyard, and made a hedge round about it, and dug in it a press, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen; and went into a strange country.

Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus ejus.

When vintage-time drew near, he sent his own servants on an errand to the vine-dressers, to claim its revenues.
34
And when the time of the fruits drew nigh, he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof.
35
Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt.
35
Whereupon the vine-dressers laid hands upon his servants; one they beat, one they killed outright, one they stoned.

And the husbandmen laying hands on his servants, beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36
Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter.
36
And he sent other servants on a second errand, more than he had sent at first, but they were used no better.
36
Again he sent other servants more than the former; and they did to them in like manner.
37
Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum, dicens: Verebuntur filium meum.
37
After that, he sent his own son to them; They will have reverence, he said, for my son.
37
And last of all he sent to them his son, saying: They will reverence my son.

Agricolæ autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se: Hic est hæres, venite, occidamus eum, et habebimus hæreditatem ejus.

But when the vine-dressers found his son coming to them, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and seize upon the inheritance.
38
But the husbandmen seeing the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and we shall have his inheritance.
39
Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt.
39
And they laid hands on him, thrust him out from the vineyard, and killed him.
39
And taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40
Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ, quid faciet agricolis illis?

And now, what will the owner of the vineyard do to those vine-dressers when he returns?
40
When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen?
41
Aiunt illi: Malos male perdet: et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis.

They said, He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will let out the vineyard to other vine-dressers, who will pay him his due when the season comes.

They say to him: He will bring those evil men to an evil end; and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen, that shall render him the fruit in due season.

Dicit illis Jesus: Numquam legistis in Scripturis: Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli: a Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris?

And Jesus said to them, Have you never read those words in the scriptures, The very stone which the builders rejected has become the chief stone at the corner; this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Ideo dico vobis, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei, et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus.

I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and given to a people which yields the revenues that belong to it.

Therefore I say to you, that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof.
44
Et qui ceciderit super lapidem istum, confringetur: super quem vero ceciderit, conteret eum.
44
As for the stone, when a man falls against it, he will break his bones; when it falls upon him, it will scatter him like chaff.

And whosoever shall fall on this stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

Et cum audissent principes sacerdotum et pharisæi parabolas ejus, cognoverunt quod de ipsis diceret.

The chief priests and the Pharisees saw clearly, when they heard his parables, that it was of themselves he was speaking,

And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knew that he spoke of them.
46
Et quærentes eum tenere, timuerunt turbas: quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.
46
and would gladly have laid hands on him, but they were afraid of the people, who looked upon him as a prophet.
46
And seeking to lay hands on him, they feared the multitudes: because they held him as a prophet.
