1
1
As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Master, what stones! What a fabric!
1
And as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him? Master, behold what manner of stones and what buildings are here.
2
Et respondens Jesus, ait illi: Vides has omnes magnas ædificationes?
2
Jesus answered him, Do you see all this huge fabric? There will not be a stone of it left on another; it will all be thrown down.
2
And Jesus answering, said to him. Seest thou all these great buildings? There shall not be left a stone upon a stone, that shall not be thrown down.
3
3
So, when he was sitting down on mount Olivet, opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him, now that they were alone:
3
And as he sat on the mount of Olivet over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him apart:
4
Dic nobis, quando ista fient? et quod signum erit, quando hæc omnia incipient consummari?
4
Tell us, when will this be? And what sign will be given, when all this is soon to be accomplished?
4
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall begin to be fulfilled?
5
5
Take care, Jesus began in answer, that you do not allow anyone to deceive you.
5
And Jesus answering, began to say to them, Take heed lest any man deceive you.
6
6
Many will come making use of my name; they will say, Here I am, and many will be deceived by it.
6
For many shall come in my name saying, I am he; and they shall deceive many.
7
7
When you hear tell of wars, and rumours of war, do not be disturbed in mind; such things must happen, but the end will not come yet.
7
And when you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, fear ye not. For such things must needs be, but the end is not yet.
8
8
Nation will rise in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, there will be earthquakes in this region or that, there will be famines: all this is but the beginning of travail.
8
For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and famines. These things are the beginning of sorrows.
9
9
But you will have to think of yourselves; men will be giving you up to courts of justice, and scourging you in the synagogues, yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings on my account, so that you can bear witness to them;
9
But look to yourselves. For they shall deliver you up to councils, and in the synagogues you shall be beaten, and you shall stand before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony unto them.
10
Et in omnes gentes primum oportet prædicari Evangelium.
10
the gospel must be preached to all nations before the end.
10
And unto all nations the gospel must first be preached.
11
11
When they take you and hand you over thus, do not consider anxiously beforehand what you are to say; use what words are given you when the time comes; it is not you that speak, it is the Holy Spirit.
11
And when they shall lead you and deliver you up, be not thoughtful beforehand what you shall speak; but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye. For it is not you that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
12
12
Brother will be given up to death by brother, and the son by his father; children will rise up against their parents, and will compass their deaths;
12
And the brother shall betray his brother unto death, and the father his son; and children shall rise up against the parents, and shall work their death.
13
13
all the world will be hating you because you bear my name; but that man will be saved, who endures to the last.
13
And you shall be hated by all men for my name’s sake. But he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved.
14
14
And now, when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should never stand (let him who reads this, recognize what it means), then those who are in Judaea must take refuge in the mountains;
14
And when you shall see the abomination of desolation, standing where it ought not: he that readeth let him understand: then let them that are in Judea, flee unto the mountains:
15
15
not going down into the house, if they are on the house-top, or entering the house to carry anything away from it;
15
And let him that is on the housetop, not go down into the house, nor enter therein to take any thing out of the house:
16
16
not turning back, if they are in the fields, to pick up a cloak.
16
And let him that shall be in the field, not turn back to take up his garment.
17
17
It will go hard with women who are with child, or have children at the breast, in those days.
17
And woe to them that are with child, and that give suck in those days.
18
Orate vero ut hieme non fiant.
18
And you must pray that your flight may not be in the winter;
18
But pray ye, that these things happen not in winter.
19
19
for those days will be days of distress, such as has not been since the beginning of creation till now, and can never be again.
19
For in those days shall be such tribulations, as were not from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, neither shall be.
20
20
There would have been no hope left for any human creature, if the Lord had not cut those days short; but he has cut the days short for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen.
20
And unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect which he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
21
21
At such a time, if a man tells you, See, here is Christ, or, See, he is there, do not believe him.
21
And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; lo, he is here: do not believe.
22
22
There will be false Christs and false prophets who will rise up and shew signs and wonders, so that, if it were possible, even the elect would be deceived.
22
For there will rise up false Christs and false prophets, and they shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce (if it were possible) even the elect.
23
Vos ergo videte: ecce prædixi vobis omnia.
23
But you must be on your guard; hereby, I have given you warning of it all.
23
Take you heed therefore; behold I have foretold you all things.
24
24
In those days, after this distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will refuse her light;
24
But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light.
25
25
and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in heaven will rock;
25
And the stars of heaven shall be falling down, and the powers that are in heaven, shall be moved.
26
26
and then they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds, with great power and glory.
26
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds, with great power and glory.
27
Et tunc mittet angelos suos, et congregabit electos suos a quatuor ventis, a summo terræ usque ad summum cæli.
27
And then he will send out his angels, to gather his elect from the four winds, from earth’s end to heaven’s.
27
And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
28
A ficu autem discite parabolam.
28
The fig-tree will teach you a parable; when its branch grows supple, and begins to put out leaves, you know that summer is near;
28
Now of the fig tree learn ye a parable. When the branch thereof is now tender, and the leaves are come forth, you know that summer is very near.
29
29
so you, when you see all this come about, are to know that it is near, at your very doors.
29
So you also when you shall see these things come to pass, know ye that it is very nigh, even at the doors.
30
Amen dico vobis, quoniam non transibit generatio hæc, donec omnia ista fiant.
30
Believe me, this generation will not have passed, before all this is accomplished.
30
Amen, I say to you, that this generation shall not pass, until all these things be done.
31
31
Though heaven and earth should pass away, my words will stand.
31
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.
32
32
But as for that day and that hour you speak of, they are known to nobody, not even to the angels in heaven, not even to the Son; only the Father knows them.
32
But of that day or hour no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father.
33
33
Look well to it; watch and pray; you do not know when the time is to come.
33
Take ye heed, watch and pray. For ye know not when the time is.
34
34
It is as if a man going on his travels had left his house, entrusting authority to his servants, each of them to do his own work, and enjoining the door-keeper to watch.
34
Even as a man who going into a far country, left his house; and gave authority to his servants over every work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35
vigilate ergo (nescitis enim quando dominus domus veniat: sero, an media nocte, an galli cantu, an mane),
35
Be on the watch, then, since you do not know when the master of the house is coming, at twilight, or midnight, or cock-crow, or dawn;
35
Watch ye therefore, (for you know not when the lord of the house cometh: at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning,)
36
ne, cum venerit repente, inveniat vos dormientes.
36
if not, he may come suddenly, and find you asleep.
36
Lest coming on a sudden, he find you sleeping.
37
Quod autem vobis dico, omnibus dico: Vigilate.
37
And what I say to you, I say to all, Watch.
37
And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch.
