Chapter 11
|
Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
1
After this, all the men of Israel rallied to David at Hebron; We are kith and kin of thine, they said.
1
Then all Israel gathered themselves to David in Hebron, saying: We are thy bone, and thy flesh.
2
2
It is not so long since Israel marched under thy orders, when Saul was still reigning; and the Lord has promised thee that thou shouldst be its shepherd and its captain.
2
Yesterday also, and the day before when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: for the Lord thy God said to thee: Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over them.
3
Venerunt ergo omnes majores natu Israël ad regem in Hebron, et iniit David cum eis fœdus coram Domino: unxeruntque eum regem super Israël, juxta sermonem Domini quem locutus est in manu Samuel.
3
And so the elders of Israel went to his court at Hebron; and there, at Hebron, in the Lord’s presence, David made a covenant with them, and they anointed him king of Israel, so fulfilling the promise which the Lord made to him through Samuel.
3
So all the ancients of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and David made a covenant with them before the Lord: and they anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke in the hand of Samuel.
4
Abiit quoque David et omnis Israël in Jerusalem: hæc est Jebus, ubi erant Jebusæi habitatores terræ.
4
When David and his army marched on Jerusalem, which was then called Jebus, and its native inhabitants Jebusites,
4
And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus, where the Jebusites were the inhabitants of the land.
5
5
the defenders of it told him, Thou shalt never make thy way in here. But take it he did, the keep of Sion that is called David’s Keep.
5
And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David: Thou shalt not come in here. But David took the castle of Sion, which is the city of David.
6
6
Chief and leader shall he be, David promised, that is the first to dislodge these Jebusites; and Joab son of Sarvia was first to scale the walls, so he became leader of the army.
6
And he said: Whosoever shall first strike the Jebusites, shall be the head and chief captain. And Joab the son of Sarvia went up first, and was made the general.
7
7
There, then, in the keep David made his dwelling, and called it the Keep of David;
7
And David dwelt in the castle, and therefore it was called the city of David.
8
Ædificavitque urbem in circuitu a Mello usque ad gyrum; Joab autem reliqua urbis exstruxit.
8
he built walls about it, too, with Mello for their outer bastion, and left Joab to build the rest of the city.
8
And he built the city round about from Mello all round, and Joab built the rest of the city.
9
9
So he went on, prospering and gaining strength, and the Lord God of hosts was with him.
9
And David went on growing and increasing, and the Lord of hosts was with him.
10
10
And these are the names of David’s champions, that helped him to attain that rule over Israel which the Lord had promised,
10
These are the chief of the valiant man of David, who helped him to be made king over all Israel, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke to Israel.
11
Et iste numerus robustorum David: Jesbaam filius Hachamoni princeps inter triginta: iste levavit hastam suam super trecentos vulneratos una vice.
11
the great warriors that were enlisted in David’s service. First among all the thirty was Jesbaam the son of Hachamoni; his spear it was that slew three hundred men in one assault.
11
And this is the number of the heroes of David: Jesbaam the son of Hachamoni the chief among the thirty: he lifted up his spear against three hundred wounded by him at one time.
12
12
After him his cousin, Eleazar the Ahohite, one of the three champions
12
And after him was Eleazar his uncle’s son the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.
13
Iste fuit cum David in Phesdomim, quando Philisthiim congregati sunt ad locum illum in prælium: et erat ager regionis illius plenus hordeo, fugeratque populus a facie Philisthinorum.
13
that were with David at Phesdomim, where the Philistines had mustered for battle. There in a field of barley, when Israel had fled in confusion,
13
He was with David in Phesdomim, when the Philistines were gathered to that place to battle: and the field of that country was full of barley, and the people fled from before the Philistines.
14
Hi steterunt in medio agri, et defenderunt eum: cumque percussissent Philisthæos, dedit Dominus salutem magnam populo suo.
14
these three stood in the middle of it and held it against the Philistines till they had defeated them; a great victory the Lord gave Israel that day.
14
But these men stood in the midst of the field, and defended it: and they slew the Philistines, and the Lord gave a great deliverance to his people.
15
15
And once these three leaders of the Thirty were at David’s side in the cave of Odollam; the Philistines had encamped in the Valley of the Giants,
15
And three of the thirty captains went down to the rock, wherein David was, to the cave of Odollam, when the Philistines encamped in the valley of Raphaim.
16
Porro David erat in præsidio, et statio Philisthinorum in Bethlehem.
16
and David kept close in his stronghold. The Philistines had a garrison at this time in Bethlehem;
16
And David was in a hold, and the garrison of the Philistines in Bethlehem.
17
17
and now David, overcome with longing, said aloud, Oh for a cup of water from the well by Bethlehem gate!
17
And David longed, and said: O that some man would give me water of the cistern of Bethlehem, which is in the gate.
18
18
Whereupon the three champions broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it to David. Instead of drinking it, he poured it out as a libation to the Lord;
18
And these three broke through the midst of the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem, which was in the gate, and brought it to David to drink: and he would not drink of it, but rather offered it to the Lord,
19
dicens: Absit ut in conspectu Dei mei hoc faciam, et sanguinem istorum virorum bibam: quia in periculo animarum suarum attulerunt mihi aquam. Et ob hanc causam noluit bibere: hæc fecerunt tres robustissimi.
19
As God sees me, he cried, never that! That were to drink men’s blood; they brought it to me at the peril of their lives; it is not for my drinking. Such were the feats of the first three champions.
19
Saying: God forbid that I should do this in the sight of my God, and should drink the blood of these men: for with the danger of their lives they have brought me the water. And therefore he would not drink. These things did the three most valiant.
20
Abisai quoque frater Joab ipse erat princeps trium, et ipse levavit hastam suam contra trecentos vulneratos, et ipse erat inter tres nominatissimus,
20
Abisai, too, Joab’s brother, was one of three champions; with his own spear he engaged three hundred men and slew them.
20
And Abisai the brother of Joab, he was chief of three, and he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he slew, and he was renowned among the three,
21
21
A great name he had as one of the second three, among whom he was foremost, leading the others, but he could not rival the first three.
21
And illustrious among the second three, and their captain: but yet he attained not to the first three.
22
Banaias filius Jojadæ viri robustissimi, qui multa opera perpetrarat, de Cabseel: ipse percussit duos ariel Moab, et ipse descendit et interfecit leonem in media cisterna tempore nivis.
22
There was Banaias, too, whose father, Joiada of Cabseel, was a warrior famous for his exploits. Banaias it was that slew the two Heroes of Moab; he also went down into a cavern on a day of snow, and killed a lion there.
22
Banaias the son of Joiada, a most valiant man, of Cabseel, who had done many acts: he slew the two ariels of Moab: and he went down, and killed a lion in the midst of a pit in the time of snow.
23
23
And there was an Egyptian he slew; a man five cubits high, that carried a spear as big as a weaver’s beam; Banaias went into battle with a club, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear, wresting it from his hand.
23
And he slew an Egyptian, whose stature was of five cubits, and who had a spear like a weaver’s beam: and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked away the spear, that he held in his hand, and slew him with his own spear.
24
24
Such were the feats of Banaias son of Joiada; he too was famous as one of the three champions,
24
These things did Banaias the son of Joiada, who was renowned among the three valiant ones,
25
25
and of foremost rank among the Thirty, but he could not rival the first three. He was the man David appointed to carry out his secret commands.
25
And the first among the thirty, but yet to the three he attained not: and David made him of his council.
26
