Now the sons of Ruben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was his firstborn: but forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his first birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, and he was not accounted for the firstborn.

Filii quoque Ruben primogeniti Israël. (Ipse quippe fuit primogenitus ejus: sed cum violasset thorum patris sui, data sunt primogenita ejus filiis Joseph filii Israël, et non est ille reputatus in primogenitum.

And now for the sons of Ruben, Israel’s first-born. First-born he was, yet never so reckoned, from the day when he came between his father’s sheets; his privilege went to another son of Israel, Joseph, instead.

But of the race of Juda, who was the strongest among his brethren, came the princes: but the first birthright was accounted to Joseph.)

Porro Judas, qui erat fortissimus inter fratres suos, de stirpe ejus principes germinati sunt: primogenita autem reputata sunt Joseph.)

Of all those brethren, Juda was the most powerful, and from him chieftains sprang; but it was still Joseph that had the first-born’s privilege.

The sons then of Ruben the firstborn of Israel were Enoch, and Phallu, Esron, and Charmi.

Filii ergo Ruben primogeniti Israël: Enoch, et Phallu, Esron, et Carmi.

The sons of Ruben, Israel’s first-born, were called Enoch, Phallu, Esron and Charmi ….

The sons of Joel: Samaia his son, Gog his son, Semei his son,

Filii Joël: Samia filius ejus, Gog filius ejus, Semei filius ejus,

From Joel came Samaia, Gog, Semei,

Micha his son, Reia his son, Baal his son,

Micha filius ejus, Reia filius ejus, Baal filius ejus,

Micha, Reia and Baal;

Beera his son, whom Thelgathphalnasar king of the Assyrians carried away captive, and he was prince in the tribe of Ruben.

Beera filius ejus, quem captivum duxit Thelgathphalnasar rex Assyriorum, et fuit princeps in tribu Ruben.

from him, too, came Beera, the Rubenite chieftain who was carried off as a prisoner by Thelgath-Phalnasar, king of the Assyrians.

And his brethren, and all his kindred, when they were numbered by their families, had for princes Jehiel, and Zacharias.

Fratres autem ejus, et universa cognatio ejus, quando numerabantur per familias suas, habuerunt principes Jehiel, et Zachariam.

But the stock of his clan counted many households, who had still their own chieftains, Jehiel, and Zacharias,

And Bala the son of Azaz, the son of Samma, the son of Joel, dwelt in Aroer as far as Nebo, and Beelmeon.

Porro Bala filius Azaz filii Samma filii Joël, ipse habitavit in Aroër usque ad Nebo, et Beelmeon.

and Bala, that was descended from Joas through Samma and Azaz, and held lands in Aroer right up to Nebo and Beelmeon.

And eastward he had his habitation as far as the entrance of the desert, and the river Euphrates. For they possessed a great number of cattle in the land of Galaad.

Contra orientalem quoque plagam habitavit usque ad introitum eremi, et flumen Euphraten. Multum quippe jumentorum numerum possidebant in terra Galaad.

On the east, they were bounded by the approaches of the desert, and the river Euphrates; many were the cattle they grazed in the Galaadite country.

And in the days of Saul they fought against the Agarites, and slew them, and dwelt in their tents in their stead, in all the country, that looketh to the east of Galaad.

In diebus autem Saul præliati sunt contra Agareos, et interfecerunt illos, habitaveruntque pro eis in tabernaculis eorum, in omni plaga quæ respicit ad orientem Galaad.

In Saul’s time, they had fought against the Agareans and made an end of them, occupying their tents thenceforward all over the eastern part of Galaad.

And the children of Gad dwelt over against them in the land of Basan, as far as Selcha:

Filii vero Gad e regione eorum habitaverunt in terra Basan usque Selcha:

Beyond them, the descendants of Gad held all Basan up to Selcha;

Johel the chief, and Saphan the second: and Janai, and Saphat in Basan.

Joël in capite, et Saphan secundus: Janai autem et Saphat in Basan.

Joel held the primacy, and after him came Saphan, Janai and Saphat, there in Basan.

And their brethren according to the houses of their kindreds, were Michael, and Mosollam, and Sebe, and Jorai, and Jacan, and Zie, and Heber, seven.

Fratres vero eorum secundum domos cognationum suarum, Michaël, et Mosollam, et Sebe, et Jorai, et Jachan, et Zie, et Heber, septem.

Seven kindred chiefs they had, all at the head of their clans, Michael, Mosollam, Sebe, Jorai, Jachan, Zie and Heber;

These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jara, the son of Galaad, the son of Michael, the son of Jesisi, the son of Jeddo, the son of Buz.

Hi filii Abihail, filii Huri, filii Jara, filii Galaad, filii Michaël, filii Jesesi, filii Jeddo, filii Buz.

all these were descended through Abihail, Huri, Jara, Galaad, Michael, Jesesi and Jeddo from Buz;

And their brethren the sons of Abdiel, the son of Guni, chief of the house in their families,

Fratres quoque, filii Abdiel filii Guni, princeps domus in familiis suis.

their kinsmen, too, the sons of Abdiel, son of Guni, were chieftains of clans.

And they dwelt in Galaad, and in Basan and in the towns thereof, and in all the suburbs of Saron, unto the borders.

Et habitaverunt in Galaad, et in Basan, et in viculis ejus, et in cunctis suburbanis Saron, usque ad terminos.

In Galaad they dwelt, and in the townships of Basan, and on the common-lands of Saron, right up to its borders.

All these were numbered in the days of Joathan king of Juda, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

Omnes hi numerati sunt in diebus Joathan regis Juda, et in diebus Jeroboam regis Israël.

All these were registered in the days when Joatham reigned in Juda, and Jeroboam in Israel.

The sons of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses, fighting men, bearing shields, and swords, and bending the bow, and trained up to battles, four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore that went out to war.

Filii Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiæ tribus Manasse, viri bellatores, scuta portantes et gladios, et tendentes arcum, eruditique ad prælia, quadraginta quatuor millia et septingenti sexaginta, procedentes ad pugnam.

There were forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty warriors from Ruben, Gad, and the eastern half of Manasses, with shield and sword and bow, trained men all, that went out to battle,

They fought against the Agarites: but the Itureans, and Naphis, and Nodab,

Dimicaverunt contra Agareos: Ituræi vero, et Naphis, et Nodab

and levied war on the Agareans, who had Ituraea and Naphis and Nodab

Gave them help. And the Agarites were delivered into their hands, and all that were with them, because they called upon God in the battle: and he heard them, because they had put their faith in him.

præbuerunt eis auxilium. Traditique sunt in manus eorum Agarei, et universi qui fuerant cum eis, quia Deum invocaverunt cum præliarentur: et exaudivit eos, eo quod credidissent in eum.

to lend them aid. They cried out to the Lord as they went into the fight, and he, to reward their faith, paid heed to them, giving them the mastery over the Agareans and their allies.

And they took all that they possessed, of camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men a hundred thousand souls.

Ceperuntque omnia quæ possederant, camelorum quinquaginta millia, et ovium ducenta quinquaginta millia, et asinos duo millia, et animas hominum centum millia.

All the enemy possessed fell into their hands, fifty thousand camels, two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand asses, besides a hundred thousand prisoners;

And many fell down slain: for it was the battle of the Lord. And they dwelt in their stead till the captivity.

Vulnerati autem multi corruerunt: fuit enim bellum Domini. Habitaveruntque pro eis usque ad transmigrationem.

and many of them they slew in battle. The Lord had espoused his people’s quarrel, and the Agareans might never come by their own lands again till the time of the captivity.

And the children of the half tribe of Manasses possessed the land, from the borders of Basan unto Baal, Hermon, and Sanir, and mount Hermon, for their number was great.

Filii quoque dimidiæ tribus Manasse possederunt terram a finibus Basan usque Baal, Hermon, et Sanir, et montem Hermon: ingens quippe numerus erat.

As for the men of eastern Manasses, the territory they held reached from the frontier of Basan as far as Baal-Hermon, and Sanir, and mount Hermon itself, so great their number was.

And these were the heads of the house of their kindred, Epher, and Jesi, and Eliel, and Esriel, and Jeremia, and Odoia, and Jediel, most valiant and powerful men, and famous chiefs in their families.

Et hi fuerunt principes domus cognationis eorum: Epher, et Jesi, et Eliel, et Ezriel, et Jeremia, et Odoia, et Jediel, viri fortissimi et potentes, et nominati duces in familiis suis.

Their clan chiefs were Epher, Jesi, Eliel, Ezriel, Jeremia, Odoia and Jediel; these were the men of rank and power who gave their names to the clans.

But they forsook the God of their fathers, and went astray after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.

Reliquerunt autem Deum patrum suorum, et fornicati sunt post deos populorum terræ, quos abstulit Deus coram eis.

But all these forsook the God of their fathers, and played the wanton by worshipping with the native folk whom God had dispossessed at their coming.

And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Phul king of the Assyrians, and the spirit of Thelgathphalnasar king of Assur: and he carried away Ruben, and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, and brought them to Lahela, and to Habor, and to Ara, and to the river of Gozan, unto this day.

Et suscitavit Deus Israël spiritum Phul regis Assyriorum, et spiritum Thelgathphalnasar regis Assur: et transtulit Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiam tribum Manasse, et adduxit eos in Lahela, et in Habor, et Ara, et fluvium Gozan, usque ad diem hanc.

So he, the God of Israel, would incite the Assyrian kings, Phul and Thelgath-Phalnasar, to remove Ruben and Gad and eastern Manasses; to Lahela, Habor, Ara and the river Gozan he carried them off, and there they remain to this day.
