Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
Tulit ergo populus terræ Joachaz filium Josiæ, et constituit regem pro patre suo in Jerusalem.
1
The choice of the people now fell upon Josias’ son Joachaz, whom they crowned at Jerusalem to succeed his father.
1
Then the people of the land took Joachaz the son of Josias, and made him king instead of his father in Jerusalem.
2
Viginti trium annorum erat Joachaz cum regnare cœpisset, et tribus mensibus regnavit in Jerusalem.
2
He was twenty-three years old when he came to the throne, and his reign at Jerusalem lasted but three months;
2
Joachaz was three and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.
3
3
then he was deposed by the king of Egypt, who marched to Jerusalem and levied a fine from the country, a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
3
And the king of Egypt came to Jerusalem, and deposed him, and condemned the land in a hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.
4
4
Joachaz he carried off with him to Egypt, and set up one of the other princes to rule Juda and Jerusalem, Eliakim, whose name he changed to Joakim.
4
And he made Eliakim his brother king in his stead, over Juda and Jerusalem: and he turned his name to Joakim: but he took Joachaz with him, and carried him away into Egypt.
5
Viginti quinque annorum erat Joakim cum regnare cœpisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem: fecitque malum coram Domino Deo suo.
5
This Joakim was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne, and his reign at Jerusalem lasted eleven years, during which he defied the will of the Lord his God.
5
Joakim was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did evil before the Lord his God.
6
Contra hunc ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Chaldæorum, et vinctum catenis duxit in Babylonem.
6
Then he was attacked by the king of Babylon, Nabuchodonosor, who led him off to Babylon in chains;
6
Against him came up Nabuchodonosor king of the Chaldeans, and led him bound in chains into Babylon.
7
7
he also carried off (some of) the furniture of the Lord’s house, and laid it up in his own temple there.
7
And he carried also thither the vessels of the Lord, and put them in his temple.
8
8
What else Joakim did, all his idolatry and the story of the life he lived, may be found in the Record of the kings of Juda and Israel; he was succeeded by his son Joachin.
8
But the rest of the acts of Joakim, and his abominations, which he wrought, and the things that were found in him, are contained in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel. And Joachin his son reigned in his stead.
9
Octo annorum erat Joachin cum regnare cœpisset, et tribus mensibus ac decem diebus regnavit in Jerusalem: fecitque malum in conspectu Domini.
9
This Joachin was eight(een) years old when he came to the throne, and his reign at Jerusalem lasted three months and ten days. He too defied the Lord’s will,
9
Joachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
10
Cumque anni circulus volveretur, misit Nabuchodonosor rex, qui adduxerunt eum in Babylonem, asportatis simul pretiosissimis vasis domus Domini. Regem vero constituit Sedeciam patruum ejus super Judam et Jerusalem.
10
and when the spring came round, Nabuchodonosor had him brought to Babylon, with all the most precious of the furniture that was left in the Lord’s house. And he set up as king of Juda and Jerusalem Joachin’s uncle Sedecias.
10
And at the return of the year, king Nabuchodonosor sent, and brought him to Babylon, carrying away at the same time the most precious vessels of the house of the Lord: and he made Sedecias his uncle king over Juda and Jerusalem.
11
11
This Sedecias was twenty-one years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned at Jerusalem eleven years.
11
Sedecias was one and twenty years old when he began to reign: and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.
12
12
He defied the Lord’s will, nothing abashed by the prophet Jeremias, that carried threats to him from the Lord’s own lips.
12
And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God, and did not reverence the face of Jeremias the prophet speaking to him from the mouth of the Lord.
13
13
He rebelled against Nabuchodonosor, though he had plighted his allegiance to him in the name of God; refused ever the yoke, steeled ever his heart, and would not come back to the Lord, the God of Israel.
13
He also revolted from king Nabuchodonosor, who had made him swear by God: and he hardened his neck and his heart, from returning to the Lord the God of Israel.
14
14
All the chief priests, too, and the common folk did heinous wrong by following the detestable ways of the heathen; desecrated that sanctuary the Lord had set apart for himself at Jerusalem.
14
Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people wickedly transgressed according to all the abominations of the Gentiles: and they defiled the house of the Lord, which he had sanctified to himself in Jerusalem.
15
15
He, the God of their fathers, sent messengers to warn them; never a day dawned but he was already pleading with them, so well he loved his people and his dwelling-place.
15
And the Lord the God of their fathers sent to them, by the hand of his messengers, rising early, and daily admonishing them: because he spared his people and his dwelling place.
16
At illi subsannabant nuntios Dei, et parvipendebant sermones ejus, illudebantque prophetis, donec ascenderet furor Domini in populum ejus, et esset nulla curatio.
16
And they? They mocked the Lord’s own messengers, made light of his warnings, derided his prophets, until at last the Lord’s anger was roused against his people, past all assuaging.
16
But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused the prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and there was no remedy.
17
17
Then it was that he embroiled them with the king of Babylon, who came and put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary itself, pitying neither young man nor maid, old man nor cripple; none might escape his attack.
17
For he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, and he slew their young men with the sword in the house of his sanctuary, he had no compassion on young man, or maiden, old man or even him that stooped for age, but he delivered them all into his hands.
18
18
All the furniture of the Lord’s house, great and small, all the treasures of temple and king and princes, must be carried off to Babylon.
18
And all the vessels of the house of the Lord, great and small, and the treasures of the temple and of the king, and of the princes he carried away to Babylon.
19
Incenderunt hostes domum Dei, destruxeruntque murum Jerusalem: universas turres combusserunt, et quidquid pretiosum fuerat, demoliti sunt.
19
Enemy hands set fire to the Lord’s house, pulled down Jerusalem’s walls, burnt its towers to the ground, destroyed all that was of price.
19
And the enemies set fire to the house of God, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burnt all the towers, and whatsoever was precious they destroyed.
20
Si quis evaserat gladium, ductus in Babylonem servivit regi et filiis ejus, donec imperaret rex Persarum,
20
Those who escaped massacre were carried off to Babylon, where they must live as slaves to the king and his heirs until their empire should pass to the king of Persia;
20
Whosoever escaped the sword, was led into Babylon, and there served the king and his sons till the reign of the king of Persia.
21
21
then, at last, the Lord’s prophecy through Jeremias would be fulfilled, then the land of Juda would have lain fallow long enough. Fallow it must lie, until seventy years had come and gone.
21
That the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremias might be fulfilled, and the land might keep her sabbaths: for all the days of the desolation she kept a sabbath, till the seventy years were expired.
22
22
So, in the first year of the Persian king, Cyrus, the Lord made good the promise which Jeremias had uttered in his name. He put a resolve into the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia; who thereupon published a written decree all through his dominions;
22
But in the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, to fulfil the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the mouth of Jeremias, the Lord stirred up the heart of Cyrus king of the Persians: who commanded it to be proclaimed through all his kingdom, and by writing also, saying:
23
23
A message, it said, from Cyrus, king of Persia. The Lord God of heaven has made me master of the world, and now he will have me rebuild his own temple for him at Jerusalem, a city of Judaea. Who is left among you of his own people? Let him go to the task, with the Lord his God to speed him.
23
Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians: All the kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord the God of heaven given to me, and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea: who is there among you of all his people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.
