Observa mensem novarum frugum, et verni primum temporis, ut facias Phase Domino Deo tuo: quoniam in isto mense eduxit te Dominus Deus tuus de Ægypto nocte.

Mark well that first spring month when the crops are yet green; it is time to celebrate the pasch in the Lord’s honour. In that month, at dead of night, the Lord thy God rescued thee from Egypt.

Observe the month of new corn, which is the first of the spring, that thou mayst celebrate the phase to the Lord thy God: because in this month the Lord thy God brought thee out of Egypt by night.

Immolabisque Phase Domino Deo tuo de ovibus, et de bobus, in loco quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, ut habitet nomen ejus ibi.

In the place which the Lord thy God has chosen for the sanctuary of his name, flock and herd alike must provide their paschal victims.

And thou shalt sacrifice the phase to the Lord thy God, of sheep, and of oxen, in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, that his name may dwell there.

Non comedes in eo panem fermentatum: septem diebus comedes absque fermento afflictionis panem, quoniam in pavore egressus es de Ægypto: ut memineris diei egressionis tuæ de Ægypto, omnibus diebus vitæ tuæ.

At this feast, no bread must be eaten that has leaven in it; for seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, the food of perilous times, when thou didst escape from Egypt in fear; never as long as thou livest shall the manner of thy departure from Egypt be forgotten.

Thou shalt not eat with it leavened bread: seven days shalt thou eat without leaven, the bread of affliction, because thou camest out of Egypt in fear: that thou mayst remember the day of thy coming out of Egypt, all the days of thy life.

Non apparebit fermentum in omnibus terminis tuis septem diebus, et non remanebit de carnibus ejus, quod immolatum est vespere in die primo, usque mane.

No leaven, then, must be found in all thy domain during those seven days; and of the victim slain on that first evening nothing must remain till the morrow.

No leaven shall be seen in all thy coasts for seven days, neither shall any of the flesh of that which was sacrificed the first day in the evening remain until morning.

Non poteris immolare Phase in qualibet urbium tuarum, quas Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi,

This paschal victim is not to be immolated in a city here, a city there, among all the cities the Lord thy God means to give thee;

Thou mayst not immolate the phase in any one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God will give thee:

sed in loco quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, ut habitet nomen ejus ibi: immolabis Phase vespere ad solis occasum, quando egressus es de Ægypto.

no, the Lord thy God will choose out one place to be the sanctuary of his name, and there thou wilt immolate the paschal victim at set of sun, the time of thy escape from Egypt.

But in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, that his name may dwell there: thou shalt immolate the phase in the evening, at the going down of the sun, at which time thou camest out of Egypt.

Et coques, et comedes in loco quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, maneque consurgens vades in tabernacula tua.
7
In this place of the Lord’s choice it must be cooked and eaten; then, when morning comes, thou wilt make thy way back to thy own dwelling-place.

And thou shalt dress, and eat it in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, and in the morning rising up thou shalt go into thy dwellings.
8
Sex diebus comedes azyma: et in die septima, quia collecta est Domini Dei tui, non facies opus.
8
For six days thou wilt eat unleavened bread; on the seventh thou wilt keep holiday in the Lord’s honour, and rest from work.

Six days shalt thou eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day, because it is the assembly of the Lord thy God, thou shalt do no work.
9
Septem hebdomadas numerabis tibi ab ea die qua falcem in segetem miseris.
9
From the day when the sickle is first put to thy crops, count seven whole weeks,

Thou shalt number unto thee seven weeks from that day, wherein thou didst put the sickle to the corn.
10
Et celebraris diem festum hebdomadarum Domino Deo tuo, oblationem spontaneam manus tuæ, quam offeres juxta benedictionem Domini Dei tui:

and then keep the Feast of Weeks, honouring the Lord thy God with an offering freely made out of the fruits thy labour has earned, in that measure in which the Lord has prospered thee.

And thou shalt celebrate the festival of weeks to the Lord thy God, a voluntary oblation of thy hand, which thou shalt offer according to the blessing of the Lord thy God.

et epulaberis coram Domino Deo tuo, tu, filius tuus et filia tua, servus tuus et ancilla tua, et Levites qui est intra portas tuas, advena ac pupillus et vidua, qui morantur vobiscum: in loco quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, ut habitet nomen ejus ibi.

Make good cheer in the presence of the Lord thy God, with son and daughter, serving-man and serving-maid, with the Levite who dwells in thy city, wanderer and orphan and widow that are thy neighbours, in the place the Lord thy God has chosen for his name’s sanctuary.

And thou shalt feast before the Lord thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger and the fatherless, and the widow, who abide with you: in the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, that his name may dwell there:
12
Et recordaberis quoniam servus fueris in Ægypto: custodiesque ac facies quæ præcepta sunt.

Never forget that thou too wast a slave once in Egypt; the more reason why thou shouldst obey this order I give thee.

And thou shalt remember that thou wast a servant in Egypt: and thou shalt keep and do the things that are commanded.

Solemnitatem quoque tabernaculorum celebrabis per septem dies, quando collegeris de area et torculari fruges tuas:

The Feast of Tent-dwelling thou shalt observe for seven days, at the time when corn and wine are all gathered in,

Thou shalt celebrate the solemnity also of tabernacles seven days, when thou hast gathered in thy fruit of the barnfloor and of the winepress.

et epulaberis in festivitate tua, tu, filius tuus et filia, servus tuus et ancilla, Levites quoque et advena, pupillus et vidua qui intra portas tuas sunt.

keeping holiday again and making good cheer, with son and daughter, serving-man and serving-maid, Levite and wanderer, orphan and widow that are thy neighbours.

And thou shalt make merry in thy festival time, thou, thy son, and thy daughter, thy manservant, and thy maidservant, the Levite also and the stranger, and the fatherless and the widow that are within thy gates.
15
Septem diebus Domino Deo tuo festa celebrabis in loco quem elegerit Dominus: benedicetque tibi Dominus Deus tuus in cunctis frugibus tuis, et in omni opere manuum tuarum, erisque in lætitia.

For seven days, in the place he has chosen, thou shalt keep holiday in honour of the Lord thy God; so greatly will he prosper thy harvest and all the enterprises thou dost set thy hand to, that thou wilt have good reason to rejoice.

Seven days shalt thou celebrate feasts to the Lord thy God in the place which the Lord shall choose: and the Lord thy God will bless thee in all thy fruits, and in every work of thy hands, and thou shalt be in joy.
16
Tribus vicibus per annum apparebit omne masculinum tuum in conspectu Domini Dei tui in loco quem elegerit: in solemnitate azymorum, in solemnitate hebdomadarum, et in solemnitate tabernaculorum. Non apparebit ante Dominum vacuus:

Three times a year, then, all thy men folk shall present themselves before the Lord thy God in the place of his choice; at the three feasts of the Pasch, of Weeks, and of Tent-dwelling. No one shall present himself before the Lord empty-handed;

Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose: in the feast of unleavened bread, in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles. No one shall appear with his hands empty before the Lord:
17
sed offeret unusquisque secundum quod habuerit juxta benedictionem Domini Dei sui, quam dederit ei.

each will have a gift to bring, in that measure in which the Lord his God has prospered him.

But every one shall offer according to what he hath, according to the blessing of the Lord his God, which he shall give him.
18
Judices et magistros constitues in omnibus portis tuis, quas Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi, per singulas tribus tuas: ut judicent populum justo judicio,

In all the cities the Lord thy God gives thee, thou shalt appoint judges and magistrates among thy fellow-tribesmen. And these are to settle their neighbours’ quarrels by just award,

Thou shalt appoint judges and magistrates in all thy gates, which the Lord thy God shall give thee, in all thy tribes: that they may judge the people with just judgment,

nec in alteram partem declinent. Non accipies personam, nec munera: quia munera excæcant oculos sapientum, et mutant verba justorum.

and listen to both parties, not moved by influence or bribery; such power a bribe has to rob even the wise of clear vision, to alter the sentence even of the just.

And not go aside to either part. Thou shalt not accept person nor gifts: for gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and change the words of the just.
20
Juste quod justum est persequeris: ut vivas, et possideas terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi.
20
Right is right, and ever thou must keep it in view, if thou wouldst live long in the enjoyment of the land which the Lord thy God means to give thee.
20
Thou shalt follow justly after that which is just: that thou mayst live and possess the land, which the Lord thy God shall give thee.
21
Non plantabis lucum, et omnem arborem juxta altare Domini Dei tui.
21
There must be no sacred wood around the Lord’s altar, no tree of any kind,
21
Thou shalt plant no grove, nor any tree near the altar of the Lord thy God:
22
Nec facies tibi, neque constitues statuam: quæ odit Dominus Deus tuus.
22
nor must thou make thyself an image and set it up there; all such worship is hateful to the Lord thy God.
22
Neither shalt thou make nor set up to thyself a statue: which things the Lord thy God hateth.
