Si quis furatus fuerit bovem aut ovem, et occiderit vel vendiderit: quinque boves pro uno bove restituet, et quatuor oves pro una ove.

The man who steals ox or sheep and slaughters or sells it, must make restitution at the rate of five oxen for one, and four sheep for one.

If any man steal an ox or a sheep, and kill or sell it: he shall restore five oxen for one ox, and four sheep for one sheep.

Si effringens fur domum sive suffodiens fuerit inventus, et accepto vulnere mortuus fuerit, percussor non erit reus sanguinis.

When a thief is caught breaking into a house, or digging under the walls of it, the man who deals him a fatal wound is not guilty of murder, unless the deed was done after sun-rise.

If a thief be found breaking open a house or undermining it, and be wounded so as to die: he that slew him shall not be guilty of blood.

Quod si orto sole hoc fecerit, homicidium perpetravit, et ipse morietur. Si non habuerit quod pro furto reddat, ipse venundabitur.

If the sun be risen, there is murder done, and life must pay for life. The thief who has no money to make restitution with, must himself be sold as a slave.

But if he did this when the sun is risen, he hath committed murder, and he shall die. If he have not wherewith to make restitution for the theft, he shall be sold.

Si inventum fuerit apud eum quod furatus est, vivens: sive bos, sive asinus, sive ovis, duplum restituet.

If something stolen, ox or ass or sheep, is found alive in the possession of the thief, he shall make restitution twofold.

If that which he stole be found with him, alive, either ox, or ass, or sheep: he shall restore double.

Si læserit quispiam agrum vel vineam, et dimiserit jumentum suum ut depascatur aliena: quidquid optimum habuerit in agro suo, vel in vinea, pro damni æstimatione restituet.

If anyone damages field or vineyard by letting some beast of his feed on another man’s property, he must make good the estimated loss out of the best crop in his own field or vineyard.

If any man hurt a field or a vineyard, and put in his beast to feed upon that which is other men’s: he shall restore the best of whatsoever he hath in his own field, or in his vineyard, according to the estimation of the damage.

Si egressus ignis invenerit spinas, et comprehenderit acervos frugum, sive stantes segetes in agris, reddet damnum qui ignem succenderit.

If a fire breaks out and catches among thorn-bushes, setting light to heaps of grain or to corn standing in the fields, the man who lit the fire must make good the loss.

If a fire breaking out light upon thorns, and catch stacks of corn, or corn standing in the fields, he that kindled the fire shall make good the loss.

Si quis commendaverit amico pecuniam aut vas in custodiam, et ab eo, qui susceperat, furto ablata fuerint: si invenitur fur, duplum reddet:

Where money or goods entrusted to a friend’s keeping have been stolen, the thief, if he is found, must make twofold restitution.

If a man deliver money, or any vessel unto his friend to keep, and they be stolen away from him that received them: if the thief be found he shall restore double:

si latet fur, dominus domus applicabitur ad deos, et jurabit quod non extenderit manum in rem proximi sui,

If he cannot be found, the owner of the house where they lay in keeping shall be brought before the judgement-seat. He must swear that he laid no hands on his neighbour’s property with malicious intent.

If the thief be not known, the master of the house shall be brought to the gods, and shall swear that he did not lay his hand upon his neighbour’s goods,

ad perpetrandam fraudem, tam in bove quam in asino, et ove ac vestimento, et quidquid damnum inferre potest: ad deos utriusque causa perveniet, et si illi judicaverint, duplum restituet proximo suo.

Be there a loss of ox or ass or sheep or clothing or any other kind of property, the two parties shall come before the judgement-seat, and the defendant, if he is found guilty, shall make twofold restitution.

To do any fraud, either in ox, or in ass, or sheep, or raiment, or any thing that may bring damage: the cause of both parties shall come to the gods: and if they give judgment, he shall restore double to his neighbour.

Si quis commendaverit proximo suo asinum, bovem, ovem, et omne jumentum ad custodiam, et mortuum fuerit, aut debilitatum, vel captum ab hostibus, nullusque hoc viderit:

If a man entrusts his neighbour with ass or ox or sheep or any other beast for safe keeping, and it is killed or wounded or carried off by enemies, with no witness to the fact,

If a man deliver ass, ox, sheep, or any beast, to his neighbour’s custody, and it die, or be hurt, or be taken by enemies, and no man saw it:

jusjurandum erit in medio, quod non extenderit manum ad rem proximi sui: suscipietque dominus juramentum, et ille reddere non cogetur.

the matter shall be settled by an oath, which the owner shall accept, that the other did not lay hands on his property; there is no restitution to be made.

There shall be an oath between them, that he did not put forth his hand to his neighbour’s goods: and the owner shall accept of the oath; and he shall not be compelled to make restitution.

Quod si furto ablatum fuerit, restituet damnum domino;

But where the loss is due to theft, the owner shall be compensated.

But if it were taken away by stealth, he shall make the loss good to the owner.
13
si comestum a bestia, deferat ad eum quod occisum est, et non restituet.

If it has been killed by a wild beast, the carcase must be brought before the owner, and no amends made.
13
If it were eaten by a beast, let him bring to him that which was slain, and he shall not make restitution.
14
Qui a proximo suo quidquam horum mutuo postulaverit, et debilitatum aut mortuum fuerit domino non præsente, reddere compelletur.

Where a man has borrowed any such beast of his neighbour, and it is maimed or killed in the owner’s absence, compensation must be made to him;

If a man borrow of his neighbour any of these things, and it be hurt or die, the owner not being present, he shall be obliged to make restitution.
15
Quod si impræsentiarum dominus fuerit, non restituet, maxime si conductum venerat pro mercede operis sui.

but not if the owner himself was present, and especially if hire was being paid for the work the beast did.

But if the owner be present, he shall not make restitution, especially if it were hired and came for the hire of his work.

Si seduxerit quis virginem necdum desponsatam, dormieritque cum ea: dotabit eam, et habebit eam uxorem.
16
One who seduces a virgin not yet betrothed, and beds with her, must give her a dowry and marry her,

If a man seduce a virgin not yet espoused, and lie with her: he shall endow her, and have her to wife.
17
Si pater virginis dare noluerit, reddet pecuniam juxta modum dotis, quam virgines accipere consueverunt.
17
unless the father will not give her in marriage; then amends must be made, equivalent to the dowry which a virgin customarily receives.
17
If the maid’s father will not give her to him, he shall give money according to the dowry, which virgins are wont to receive.

Maleficos non patieris vivere.

Sorcerers must not be allowed to live.

Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live.

Qui coierit cum jumento, morte moriatur.

The man who is guilty of bestiality must pay for it with his life.
19
Whosoever copulateth with a beast shall be put to death.
20
Qui immolat diis, occidetur, præterquam Domino soli.
20
Sacrifice is for the Lord alone; he who offers it to other gods must be put to death.
20
He that sacrificeth to gods, shall be put to death, save only to the Lord.
21
Advenam non contristabis, neque affliges eum: advenæ enim et ipsi fuistis in terra Ægypti.
21
There must be no harrying or oppression of the aliens that dwell among you; time was when you too dwelt as aliens in the land of Egypt.
21
Thou shalt not molest a stranger, nor afflict him: for yourselves also were strangers in the land of Egypt.
22
Viduæ et pupillo non nocebitis.
22
You must not wrong the widow and the orphan;
22
You shall not hurt a widow or an orphan.
23
Si læseritis eos, vociferabuntur ad me, et ego audiam clamorem eorum:
23
wronged, they will cry out to me for redress, and their cry will be heard.
23
If you hurt them they will cry out to me, and I will hear their cry:
24
et indignabitur furor meus, percutiamque vos gladio, et erunt uxores vestræ viduæ, et filii vestri pupilli.
24
My anger will blaze out against you, and I will smite you with the sword, making widows of your own wives, orphans of your own children.
24
And my rage shall be enkindled, and I will strike you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25
Si pecuniam mutuam dederis populo meo pauperi qui habitat tecum, non urgebis eum quasi exactor, nec usuris opprimes.
25
If thou dost lend money to some poorer neighbour among my people, thou shalt not drive him hard as extortioners do, or burden him with usury.
25
If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor, that dwelleth with thee, thou shalt not be hard upon them as an extortioner, nor oppress them with usuries.
26
Si pignus a proximo tuo acceperis vestimentum, ante solis occasum reddes ei.
26
If thou takest thy neighbour’s garment for a pledge, thou shalt give it back to him by set of sun;
26
If thou take of thy neighbour a garment in pledge, thou shalt give it him again before sunset.
27
Ipsum enim est solum, quo operitur, indumentum carnis ejus, nec habet aliud in quo dormiat: si clamaverit ad me, exaudiam eum, quia misericors sum.

it is all he has to cover himself with, his body’s protection, all he has to sleep under. He has but to cry for redress, and I, the ever merciful, will listen to him.

For that same is the only thing wherewith he is covered, the clothing of his body, neither hath he any other to sleep in: if he cry to me, I will hear him, because I am compassionate.
28
Diis non detrahes, et principi populi tui non maledices.

Thou shalt not revile the powers above thee, or speak ill of him who rules thy people.

Thou shalt not speak ill of the gods, and the prince of thy people thou shalt not curse.

Decimas tuas et primitias tuas non tardabis reddere: primogenitum filiorum tuorum dabis mihi.

There must be no delay in paying tithes and first-fruits. Thou shalt make me an offering of the first son that is born to thee,

Thou shalt not delay to pay thy tithes and thy firstfruits: thou shalt give the firstborn of thy sons to me.
30
De bobus quoque, et ovibus similiter facies: septem diebus sit cum matre sua, die octava reddes illum mihi.
30
and with thy oxen and sheep thou shalt do the like; for seven days the dam may keep her first-born, after that it must be offered to me.
30
Thou shalt do the same with the firstborn of thy oxen also and sheep: seven days let it be with its dam, the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.
31
Viri sancti eritis mihi: carnem, quæ a bestiis fuerit prægustata, non comedetis, sed projicietis canibus.
31
You are to be men marked out for my service. Meat that has once been tasted by wild beasts shall not be used for food; it must be thrown to the dogs.
31
You shall be holy men to me: the flesh that beasts have tasted of before, you shall not eat, but shall cast it to the dogs.
