Moysi quoque dixit: Ascende ad Dominum tu, et Aaron, Nadab et Abiu, et septuaginta senes ex Israël, et adorabitis procul.

Then Moses was told, Do thou and Aaron and Nadab and Abiu, with seventy elders of Israel, come up to meet the Lord, and worship from afar.

And he said to Moses: Come up to the Lord, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abiu, and seventy of the ancients of Israel, and you shall adore afar off.

Solusque Moyses ascendet ad Dominum, et illi non appropinquabunt: nec populus ascendet cum eo.

Only Moses must enter the Lord’s presence, the rest are not to draw near, and none of the people are to come up with him.

And Moses alone shall come up to the Lord, but they shall not come nigh: neither shall the people come up with him.

Venit ergo Moyses et narravit plebi omnia verba Domini, atque judicia: responditque omnis populus una voce: Omnia verba Domini, quæ locutus est, faciemus.

So Moses went and told the people all the Lord had said, all the commands he had given; and the whole people answered with one voice, We will do all that the Lord has bidden us.

So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice: We will do all the words of the Lord, which he hath spoken.

Scripsit autem Moyses universos sermones Domini: et mane consurgens, ædificavit altare ad radices montis, et duodecim titulos per duodecim tribus Israël.

Then Moses committed everything the Lord had said to writing; and when he rose next morning, he built an altar close to the spurs of the mountain, and twelve memorial stones answering to the twelve tribes of Israel.

And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord: and rising in the morning he built an altar at the foot of the mount, and twelve titles according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Misitque juvenes de filiis Israël, et obtulerunt holocausta, immolaveruntque victimas pacificas Domino, vitulos.

And he directed some of the younger Israelites to make burnt-sacrifice there and bring welcome-offerings to the Lord, with bullocks for their victims.

And he sent young men of the children of Israel, and they offered holocausts, and sacrificed pacific victims of calves to the Lord.

Tulit itaque Moyses dimidiam partem sanguinis, et misit in crateras: partem autem residuam fudit super altare.

After this Moses took half of the blood, and set it aside in bowls; the other half he poured out on the altar.

Then he took up the book in which the covenant was inscribed, and read it aloud to the people. We will do all the Lord has bidden us, said they; we promise obedience;

And taking the book of the covenant, he read it in the hearing of the people: and they said: All things that the Lord hath spoken we will do, we will be obedient.

Ille vero sumptum sanguinem respersit in populum, et ait: Hic est sanguis fœderis quod pepigit Dominus vobiscum super cunctis sermonibus his.

and Moses took the blood and sprinkled it over the people, crying out, Here is the blood of the covenant which the Lord makes with you, in accordance with all these words of his.

And he took the blood and sprinkled it upon the people, and he said: This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.

Ascenderuntque Moyses et Aaron, Nadab et Abiu, et septuaginta de senioribus Israël:

et viderunt Deum Israël: et sub pedibus ejus quasi opus lapidis sapphirini, et quasi cælum, cum serenum est.

and had a vision of the God of Israel, with a pavement about his feet that might have been made of sapphire, bright as the fashioning of the heavens.

And they saw the God of Israel: and under his feet as it were a work of sapphire stone, and as the heaven, when clear.

Nec super eos qui procul recesserant de filiis Israël, misit manum suam, videruntque Deum, et comederunt, ac biberunt.

There they stood, far removed from the rest of Israel, and the hand of the Lord never smote them down; they had sight of him, and lived to eat and drink like mortal men.

Neither did he lay his hand upon those of the children of Israel, that retired afar off, and they saw God, and they did eat and drink.

Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: Ascende ad me in montem, et esto ibi: daboque tibi tabulas lapideas, et legem, ac mandata quæ scripsi: ut doceas eos.

And the Lord said to Moses, Come up to the mountain and abide with me there; I have still to give thee tablets of stone on which I have written down the law and the commandments thou art to teach them.

And the Lord said to Moses: Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and the law, and the commandments which I have written: that thou mayest teach them.

Surrexerunt Moyses et Josue minister ejus: ascendensque Moyses in montem Dei,

At that, Moses rose up, and his servant Josue with him; and Moses, as he began climbing God’s mountain,

senioribus ait: Expectate hic donec revertamur ad vos. Habetis Aaron et Hur vobiscum: si quid natum fuerit quæstionis, referetis ad eos.

said to the elders, Wait here till we come back to you. You have Aaron and Hur with you; to them refer all matters of dispute.

Said to the ancients: Wait ye here till we return to you. You have Aaron and Hur with you: if any question shall arise, you shall refer it to them.

Cumque ascendisset Moyses, operuit nubes montem,

When Moses had gone, the mountain was veiled in cloud;

And when Moses was gone up, a cloud covered the mount.

et habitavit gloria Domini super Sinai, tegens illum nube sex diebus: septimo autem die vocavit eum de medio caliginis.

for six days the glory of the Lord abode there on Sinai, wrapping it in cloud, and on the seventh day, from the heart of that darkness, the Lord called to him.

And the glory of the Lord dwelt upon Sinai, covering it with a cloud six days: and the seventh day he called him out of the midst of the cloud.

Erat autem species gloriæ Domini quasi ignis ardens super verticem montis in conspectu filiorum Israël.

To the Israelites, as they looked upon it, this glory of the Lord wore the semblance of a fire, burning there on the summit of the mountain.

And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like a burning fire upon the top of the mount, in the eyes of the children of Israel.

Ingressusque Moyses medium nebulæ, ascendit in montem: et fuit ibi quadraginta diebus, et quadraginta noctibus.

So Moses climbed higher up the mountain, into the heart of the cloud; for forty days and forty nights the mountain was his home.

And Moses, entering into the midst of the cloud, went up into the mountain: and he was there forty days, and forty nights.
