Ac deinceps: Præcide, ait, tibi duas tabulas lapideas instar priorum, et scribam super eas verba, quæ habuerunt tabulæ quas fregisti.

After this the Lord said to him, Carve two tablets of stone, like those others, and I will write on them the same words as I wrote on the tablets thou didst break.

And after this he said: Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the former, and I will write upon them the words which were in the tables, which thou brokest.
2
Esto paratus mane, ut ascendas statim in montem Sinai, stabisque mecum super verticem montis.
2
Be ready to come up on to mount Sinai in the morning, and there thou shalt stand before me on the mountain top.
2
Be ready in the morning, that thou mayst forthwith go up into mount Sinai, and thou shalt stand with me upon the top of the mount.

Nullus ascendat tecum, nec videatur quispiam per totum montem: boves quoque et oves non pascantur e contra.
3
No one else is to climb up with thee, no one else is to be in sight on any part of the mountain; even the cattle and the sheep must not be allowed to graze within view.

Let no man go up with thee: and let not any man be seen throughout all the mount: neither let the oxen nor the sheep feed over against it.

Excidit ergo duas tabulas lapideas, quales antea fuerant: et de nocte consurgens ascendit in montem Sinai, sicut præceperat ei Dominus, portans secum tabulas.

So Moses carved two tablets of stone, like the others; and he rose at dawn and went up mount Sinai at the Lord’s bidding, with the tablets in his hand.

Then he cut out two tables of stone, such as had been before: and rising very early he went up into the mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, carrying with him the tables.

Cumque descendisset Dominus per nubem, stetit Moyses cum eo, invocans nomen Domini.
5
The Lord came down to meet him, hidden in cloud, and Moses stood with him there, calling on the Lord’s name.

And when the Lord was come down in a cloud, Moses stood with him, calling upon the name of the Lord.

Quo transeunte coram eo, ait: Dominator Domine Deus, misericors et clemens, patiens et multæ miserationis, ac verax,

Thus the Lord passed by, and he cried out, It is the Lord God, the ruler of all things, the merciful, the gracious; slow to take vengeance, rich in kindness, faithful to his promises.

And when he passed before him, he said: O the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, patient and of much compassion, and true,
7
qui custodis misericordiam in millia; qui aufers iniquitatem, et scelera, atque peccata, nullusque apud te per se innocens est; qui reddis iniquitatem patrum filiis, ac nepotibus in tertiam et quartam progeniem.

He is true to his promise of mercy a thousand times over; shame or sin or guilt is none but he forgives it; yet, before him, none can claim innocence in his own right, and when he punishes, the son must make amends for the father’s guilt, to the third and the fourth generation.

Who keepest mercy unto thousands: who takest away iniquity, and wickedness, and sin, and no man of himself is innocent before thee. Who renderest the iniquity of the fathers to the children, and to the grandchildren, unto the third and fourth generation.

Festinusque Moyses, curvatus est pronus in terram, et adorans
8
Then, without more ado, Moses fell prostrate with his face to the ground in worship.

And Moses making haste, bowed down prostrate unto the earth, and adoring,
9
ait: Si inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, Domine, obsecro ut gradiaris nobiscum (populus enim duræ cervicis est) et auferas iniquitates nostras atque peccata, nosque possideas.

Lord, he said, if thou dost look on me with favour, I entreat thee to go with us on our journey, stiff-necked as this people is; guilt of our sins do thou pardon, and keep us for thy own.

Said: If I have found grace in thy sight: O Lord, I beseech thee, that thou wilt go with us, (for it is a stiffnecked people,) and take away our iniquities and sin, and possess us.

Respondit Dominus: Ego inibo pactum videntibus cunctis: signa faciam quæ numquam visa sunt super terram, nec in ullis gentibus, ut cernat populus iste, in cujus es medio, opus Domini terribile quod facturus sum.

And the Lord answered, Here is my covenant, to which I am pledged. In the presence of you all I will do such marvels as were never yet seen on earth by any nation; the people among whom thou dwellest shall see for themselves what the Lord can do, and be terrified at the sight.

The Lord answered: I will make a covenant in the sight of all. I will do signs such as were never seen upon the earth, nor in any nations: that this people, in the midst of whom thou art, may see the terrible work of the Lord which I will do.

Observa cuncta quæ hodie mando tibi: ego ipse ejiciam ante faciem tuam Amorrhæum, et Chananæum, et Hethæum, Pherezæum quoque, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum.

Thy part is to keep all the commandments I am now giving thee.When I dispossess Amorrhite, Chanaanite, Hethite, Pherezite, Hevite and Jebusite at thy coming,

Observe all things which this day I command thee: I myself will drive out before thy face the Amorrhite, and the Chanaanite, and the Hethite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite.

Cave ne umquam cum habitatoribus terræ illius jungas amicitias, quæ sint tibi in ruinam:

make no treaty of friendship with any inhabitant of the land, or it will be thy ruin;

Beware thou never join in friendship with the inhabitants of that land, which may be thy ruin:
13
sed aras eorum destrue, confringe statuas, lucosque succide:
13
destroy their altars, break their images, cut down their forest shrines.

But destroy their altars, break their statues, and cut down their groves:
14
noli adorare deum alienum. Dominus zelotes nomen ejus; Deus est æmulator.
14
Never pay worship to any alien god; the very name of the Lord bespeaks jealous love, he will endure no rival.
14
Adore not any strange god. The Lord his name is Jealous, he is a jealous God.
15
Ne ineas pactum cum hominibus illarum regionum: ne, cum fornicati fuerint cum diis suis, et adoraverint simulacra eorum, vocet te quispiam ut comedas de immolatis.
15
Do not ally yourselves, then, with those who dwell there; those faithless hearts will be set on their own gods, and when they do sacrifice to their idols, someone will bid thee come and feast upon the meat so offered.
15
Make no covenant with the men of those countries lest, when they have committed fornication with their gods, and have adored their idols, some one call thee to eat of the things sacrificed.

Nec uxorem de filiabus eorum accipies filiis tuis: ne, postquam ipsæ fuerint fornicatæ, fornicari faciant et filios tuos in deos suos.

Nor must thou find wives for thy sons among their daughters; faithless themselves, they will make thy sons, too, faithless, and worshippers of their own gods.

Neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son, lest after they themselves have committed fornication, they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods.

Deos conflatiles non facies tibi.

Cast no metal to make thyself idols.
17
Thou shalt not make to thyself any molten gods.

Solemnitatem azymorum custodies. Septem diebus vesceris azymis, sicut præcepi tibi, in tempore mensis novorum: mense enim verni temporis egressus es de Ægypto.

Observe the feast of unleavened bread. For seven days, in the first month of spring, thou shalt eat thy bread without leaven, as I bade thee; it was in that spring month thou didst escape from Egypt.

Thou shalt keep the feast of the unleavened bread. Seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee in the time of the month of the new corn: for in the month of the springtime thou camest out from Egypt.

Omne quod aperit vulvam generis masculini, meum erit. De cunctis animantibus, tam de bobus, quam de ovibus, meum erit.

The first male thing that comes from every womb is forfeit to me; every such living thing, be it ox or ass, is mine by right.

All of the male kind, that openeth the womb, shall be mine. Of all beasts, both of oxen and of sheep, it shall be mine.

Primogenitum asini redimes ove: sin autem nec pretium pro eo dederis, occidetur. Primogenitum filiorum tuorum redimes: nec apparebis in conspectu meo vacuus.

When an ass has her first foal, thou shalt offer a sheep in payment of its ransom; or, if thou hast no mind to ransom it, let it be killed. The first-born of thy own sons thou must ransom, presenting thyself before me with an offering.

The firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a sheep: but if thou wilt not give a price for it, it shall be slain. The firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem: neither shalt thou appear before me empty.

Sex diebus operaberis; die septimo cessabis arare et metere.

Thou hast six days to work in; on the seventh, both ploughing and reaping must cease.

Six days shalt thou work, the seventh day thou shalt cease to plough, and to reap.

Solemnitatem hebdomadarum facies tibi in primitiis frugum messis tuæ triticeæ, et solemnitatem, quando redeunte anni tempore cuncta conduntur.

Thou shalt keep the feast of the seven weeks, with the first-fruits of thy wheat harvest, and another feast at the end of the year, when all is gathered in.

Thou shalt keep the feast of weeks with the firstfruits of the corn of thy wheat harvest, and the feast when the time of the year returneth that all things are laid in.

Tribus temporibus anni apparebit omne masculinum tuum in conspectu omnipotentis Domini Dei Israël.
23
Thrice in the year all thy men folk shall present themselves before the Lord, the almighty God of Israel.
23
Three times in the year all thy males shall appear in the sight of the Almighty Lord the God of Israel.
24
Cum enim tulero gentes a facie tua, et dilatavero terminos tuos, nullus insidiabitur terræ tuæ, ascendente te, et apparente in conspectu Domini Dei tui ter in anno.
24
And so, when I have dispossessed the nations at thy coming, and given thee wide lands to dwell in, three times a year present thyself before the Lord thy God, and thy lands none shall invade by treachery.

For when I shall have taken away the nations from thy face, and shall have enlarged thy borders, no man shall lie in wait against thy land when thou shalt go up, and appear in the sight of the Lord thy God thrice in a year.
25
Non immolabis super fermento sanguinem hostiæ meæ: neque residebit mane de victima solemnitatis Phase.
25
When thou offerest living things in sacrifice to me, the bread that goes with them shall not be leavened, nor shalt thou leave any of the paschal victim till the morrow.
25
Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice upon leaven: neither shall there remain in the morning any thing of the victim of the solemnity of the Phase.
26
Primitias frugum terræ tuæ offeres in domo Domini Dei tui. Non coques hædum in lacte matris suæ.
26
Bring the first-fruits of thy land as an offering to the house of the Lord thy God. Seething a kid in its dam’s milk is a rite forbidden thee.

The first of the fruits of thy ground thou shalt offer in the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam.
27
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Scribe tibi verba hæc, quibus et tecum et cum Israël pepigi fœdus.
27
Then the Lord said to Moses, Put these words in writing, as terms of the covenant I am making with thee and with Israel.
27
And the Lord said to Moses: Write thee these words by which I have made a covenant both with thee and with Israel.
28
Fuit ergo ibi cum Domino quadraginta dies et quadraginta noctes: panem non comedit, et aquam non bibit, et scripsit in tabulis verba fœderis decem.
28
So, for forty days and nights, without food or drink, he remained there with the Lord; and he wrote down on the tablets the ten precepts of the covenant.
28
And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights: he neither ate bread nor drank water, and he wrote upon the tables the ten words of the covenant.
29
Cumque descenderet Moyses de monte Sinai, tenebat duas tabulas testimonii, et ignorabat quod cornuta esset facies sua ex consortio sermonis Domini.

Moses came down, after this, from Mount Sinai, bearing with him the two tablets on which the law was written; and his face, although he did not know it, was all radiant after the meeting at which he had held speech with God.

And when Moses came down from the mount Sinai, he held the two tables of the testimony, and he knew not that his face was horned from the conversation of the Lord.
30
Videntes autem Aaron et filii Israël cornutam Moysi faciem, timuerunt prope accedere.
30
The sight of that radiance made Aaron and the sons of Israel shrink from all near approach to him;

And Aaron and the children of Israel seeing the face of Moses horned, were afraid to come near.
31
Vocatique ab eo, reversi sunt tam Aaron, quam principes synagogæ. Et postquam locutus est ad eos,

he must call out to Aaron and the leaders of the people before they would gather round him. To these he spoke first;

And being called by him, they returned, both Aaron and the rulers of the congregation. And after that he spoke to them.
32
venerunt ad eum etiam omnes filii Israël: quibus præcepit cuncta quæ audierat a Domino in monte Sinai.
32
then all the Israelites came to greet him, and he passed on to them all the commands he had received on mount Sinai.
32
And all the children of Israel came to him: and he gave them in commandment all that he had heard of the Lord in mount Sinai.
33
Impletisque sermonibus, posuit velamen super faciem suam.
33
When he had finished speaking, he put a veil over his face,
33
And having done speaking, he put a veil upon his face.
34
Quod ingressus ad Dominum, et loquens cum eo, auferebat donec exiret, et tunc loquebatur ad filios Israël omnia quæ sibi fuerant imperata.

which he only laid aside when he went into the Lord’s presence and had speech with him. Afterwards he would come out, and tell the Israelites what commands had been given him;
34
But when he went in to the Lord, and spoke with him, he took it away until he came forth, and then he spoke to the children of Israel all things that had been commanded him.
35
Qui videbant faciem egredientis Moysi esse cornutam, sed operiebat ille rursus faciem suam, siquando loquebatur ad eos.
35
so they saw his face, as he came out, still radiant, but always, when he spoke to them, he veiled his face as before.
35
And they saw that the face of Moses when he came out was horned, but he covered his face again, if at any time he spoke to them.
