Chapter 40

Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
1
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:
1
And now the Lord said to Moses,
2
The first month, the first day of the month, thou shalt set up the tabernacle of the testimony,
2
Mense primo, prima die mensis, eriges tabernaculum testimonii,
2
When the first day of the first month comes, set up the tabernacle that is to bear record of me,
3
And shalt put the ark in it, and shalt let down the veil before it:
3
et pones in eo arcam, dimittesque ante illam velum:
3
and put the ark in it, and screen the ark with the veil.
4
And thou shalt bring in the table, and set upon it the things that are commanded according to the rite. The candlestick shall stand with its lamps,
4
4
Then bring in the table, and set out due offerings there; the lamp-stand, too, must be in its place, with lamps on it,
5
And the altar of gold whereon the incense is burnt, before the ark of the testimony. Thou shalt put the hanging in the entry of the tabernacle,
5
et altare aureum, in quo adoletur incensum, coram arca testimonii. Tentorium in introitu tabernaculi pones,
5
and the golden altar upon which incense is burnt, there before the ark that bears record of me. Stretch out the hanging at the entrance to the tabernacle,
6
And before it the altar of holocaust:
6
et ante illud altare holocausti:
6
and set down before it the altar for burnt-sacrifice,
7
The laver between the altar and the tabernacle, and thou shalt fill it with water.
7
7
with the basin there, full of water, between altar and tabernacle;
8
And thou shalt encompass the court with hangings, and the entry thereof.
8
Circumdabisque atrium tentoriis, et ingressum ejus.
8
and screen off the court and its entrance with the hangings.
9
And thou shalt take the oil of unction and anoint the tabernacle with its vessels, that they may be sanctified:
9
9
Then bring out the anointing-oil, and hallow by unction with it the tabernacle and its appurtenances;
10
The altar of holocaust and all its vessels:
10
altare holocausti et omnia vasa ejus,
10
the altar for burnt-sacrifice and all that belongs to it,
11
The laver with its foot: thou shalt consecrate all with the oil of unction, that they may be most holy.
11
11
and the washing-basin with its stand; all must be consecrated with the anointing-oil, to be holiness itself.
12
And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, and having washed them with water,
12
12
Bring Aaron, too, and his sons to the doors of the tabernacle that bears record of me, and, when they have washed,
13
Thou shalt put on them the holy vestments, that they may minister to me, and that the unction of them may prosper to an everlasting priesthood.
13
13
clothe them with the sacred vestments in which they are to minister to me, and anoint them to be my priests for ever.
14
And Moses did all that the Lord had commanded.
14
Fecitque Moyses omnia quæ præceperat Dominus.
14
Moses did as the Lord bade him;
15
So in the first month of the second year, the first day of the month, the tabernacle was set up.
15
Igitur mense primo anni secundi, prima die mensis, collocatum est tabernaculum.
15
and on the first day of the first month, in this second year of wandering, the tabernacle was set up.
16
And Moses reared it up, and placed the boards and the sockets and the bars, and set up the pillars,
16
16
To set it up, Moses must first dispose the frames, with their sockets and poles, and erect the posts;
17
And spread the roof over the tabernacle, putting over it a cover, as the Lord had commanded.
17
et expandit tectum super tabernaculum, imposito desuper operimento, sicut Dominus imperaverat.
17
then he spread the tapestry over the tabernacle, and covered it, as the Lord bade him, with the canopy.
18
And he put the testimony in the ark, thrusting bars underneath, and the oracle above.
18
Posuit et testimonium in arca, subditis infra vectibus, et oraculum desuper.
18
He put the tablets of the law in the ark, and passed the poles through at the base of it, and fixed the throne above it.
19
And when he had brought the ark into the tabernacle, he drew the veil before it to fulfil the commandment of the Lord.
19
Cumque intulisset arcam in tabernaculum, appendit ante eam velum ut expleret Domini jussionem.
19
Then, bringing the ark into the tabernacle, he spread the veil in front of it, in fulfilment of the Lord’s command.
20
And he set the table in the tabernacle of the testimony at the north side without the veil,
20
20
In front of the veil, at the northern end of the tabernacle that bore record of the Lord, he put down the table,
21
Setting there in order the loaves of proposition, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
21
ordinatis coram propositionis panibus, sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi.
21
and on it, as the Lord bade him, he set out the consecrated loaves.
22
He set the candlestick also in the tabernacle of the testimony over against the table on the south side,
22
Posuit et candelabrum in tabernaculo testimonii e regione mensæ in parte australi,
22
On the south side of the tabernacle, opposite the table, he set up the lamp-stand,
23
Placing the lamps in order, according to the precept of the Lord.
23
locatis per ordinem lucernis, juxta præceptum Domini.
23
with all its lamps in position as the Lord bade him.
24
He set also the altar of gold under the roof of the testimony over against the veil,
24
Posuit et altare aureum sub tecto testimonii contra velum,
24
And before the veil, still under the tabernacle roof, he placed the golden altar,
25
And burnt upon it the incense of spices, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
25
et adolevit super eo incensum aromatum, sicut jusserat Dominus Moysi.
25
on which, at the Lord’s command, he burnt incense made from spices.
26
And he put also the hanging in the entry of the tabernacle of the testimony,
26
Posuit et tentorium in introitu tabernaculi testimonii,
26
And now he must hang the screen at the entrance of the tabernacle,
27
And the altar of holocaust in the entry of the testimony, offering the holocaust, and the sacrifices upon it, as the Lord had commanded.
27
27
and by the door of the tabernacle must stand the altar for burnt-sacrifice, on which he offered the victims and sacrificial gifts which the Lord had prescribed.
28
And he set the laver between the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar, filling it with water.
28
28
He put the basin, too, between the tabernacle and the altar, filling it with water,
29
And Moses and Aaron, and his sons washed their hands and feet,
29
29
so that Moses and Aaron and Aaron’s sons could wash their hands and feet
30
When they went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and went to the altar, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
30
30
whenever they would enter the tabernacle that bore record of the covenant, or approach the altar, as the Lord had commanded him.
31
He set up also the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, drawing the hanging in the entry thereof. After all things were perfected,
31
31
He also set up the court round the tabernacle and the altar, and hung the screen at the entrance to it.When all was done,
32
The cloud covered the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled it.
32
operuit nubes tabernaculum testimonii, et gloria Domini implevit illud.
32
a cloud covered the tabernacle, and it was filled with the brightness of the Lord’s presence;
33
Neither could Moses go into the tabernacle of the covenant, the cloud covering all things, and the majesty of the Lord shining, for the cloud had covered all.
33
Nec poterat Moyses ingredi tectum fœderis, nube operiente omnia, et majestate Domini coruscante, quia cuncta nubes operuerat.
33
nor could Moses enter the tabernacle that bore record of the covenant, so thick the cloud that spread all about it, so radiant was the Lord’s majesty; all was wrapped in cloud.
34
If at any time the cloud removed from the tabernacle, the children of Israel went forward by their troops:
34
Siquando nubes tabernaculum deserebat, proficiscebantur filii Israël per turmas suas:
34
Whenever the cloud lifted from the tabernacle, the Israelites would muster and set out on the march,
35
If it hung over, they remained in the same place.
35
si pendebat desuper, manebant in eodem loco.
35
and while it hung there, they halted.
36
For the cloud of the Lord hung over the tabernacle by day, and a fire by night, in the sight of all the children of Israel throughout all their mansions.
36
36
The divine cloud by day, the divine fire by night, still brooded over the tabernacle for all Israel to see it, wherever they halted on their journey.
