After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.

Quæ postquam gesta sunt, tentavit Deus Abraham, et dixit ad eum: Abraham, Abraham. At ille respondit: Adsum.

After this, God would put Abraham to the test. So he called to him, Abraham, Abraham; and when he said, I am here, at thy command,

He said to him: Take thy only begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision: and there thou shalt offer him for an holocaust upon one of the mountains which I will shew thee.

Ait illi: Tolle filium tuum unigenitum, quem diligis, Isaac, et vade in terram visionis, atque ibi offeres eum in holocaustum super unum montium quem monstravero tibi.

God told him, Take thy only son, thy beloved son Isaac, with thee, to the land of Clear Vision, and there offer him to me in burnt-sacrifice on a mountain which I will shew thee.
3
So Abraham rising up in the night, saddled his ass: and took with him two young men, and Isaac his son: and when he had cut wood for the holocaust he went his way to the place which God had commanded him.

Igitur Abraham de nocte consurgens, stravit asinum suum, ducens secum duos juvenes, et Isaac filium suum: cumque concidisset ligna in holocaustum, abiit ad locum quem præceperat ei Deus.

Rising, therefore, at dawn, Abraham saddled his ass, bidding two of the men-servants and his son Isaac follow him; he cut the wood needed for the burnt-sacrifice, and then set out for the place of which God had spoken to him.

And on the third day, lifting up his eyes, he saw the place afar off.

Die autem tertio, elevatis oculis, vidit locum procul:

It was two days later when he looked up and saw it, still far off;
5
And he said to his young men: Stay you here with the ass: I and the boy will go with speed as far as yonder, and after we have worshipped, will return to you.

dixitque ad pueros suos: Expectate hic cum asino: ego et puer illuc usque properantes, postquam adoraverimus, revertemur ad vos.

and now he said to his servants, Wait here with the ass, while I and my son make our way yonder; we will come back to you, when we have offered worship there.

And he took the wood for the holocaust, and laid it upon Isaac his son: and he himself carried in his hands fire and a sword. And as they two went on together,

Tulit quoque ligna holocausti, et imposuit super Isaac filium suum: ipse vero portabat in manibus ignem et gladium. Cumque duo pergerent simul,

Then he took the wood for the sacrifice, and gave it to his son Isaac to carry; he himself carried the brazier and the knife. As they walked along together

Isaac said to his father: My father. And he answered: What wilt thou, son? Behold, saith he, fire and wood: where is the victim for the holocaust?

dixit Isaac patri suo: Pater mi. At ille respondit: Quid vis, fili? Ecce, inquit, ignis et ligna: ubi est victima holocausti?

Isaac said to him, Father. What is it, my son? he asked. Why, said he, we have the fire here and the wood; where is the lamb we need for a victim?

And Abraham said: God will provide himself a victim for an holocaust, my son. So they went on together.

Dixit autem Abraham: Deus providebit sibi victimam holocausti, fili mi. Pergebant ergo pariter.

My son, said Abraham, God will see to it that there is a lamb to be sacrificed. So they went on together
9
And they came to the place which God had shewn him, where he built an altar, and laid the wood in order upon it: and when he had bound Isaac his son, he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood.

Et venerunt ad locum quem ostenderat ei Deus, in quo ædificavit altare, et desuper ligna composuit; cumque alligasset Isaac filium suum, posuit eum in altare super struem lignorum.

till they reached the place God had shewn him. And here he built an altar, and set the wood in order on it; then he bound his son Isaac and laid him down there on the altar, above the pile of wood.

And he put forth his hand and took the sword, to sacrifice his son.

Extenditque manum, et arripuit gladium, ut immolaret filium suum.
10
And he reached out, and took up the knife, to slay his son.
11
And behold an angel of the Lord from heaven called to him, saying: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.

Et ecce angelus Domini de cælo clamavit, dicens: Abraham, Abraham. Qui respondit: Adsum.

But now, from heaven, an angel of the Lord called to him, Abraham, Abraham. And when he answered, Here am I, at thy command,
12
And he said to him: Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing to him: now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for my sake.

Dixitque ei: Non extendas manum tuam super puerum, neque facias illi quidquam: nunc cognovi quod times Deum, et non pepercisti unigenito filio tuo propter me.

the angel said, Do the lad no hurt, let him alone. I know now that thou fearest God; for my sake thou wast ready to give up thy only son.
13
Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw behind his back a ram amongst the briers sticking fast by the horns, which he took and offered for a holocaust instead of his son.

Levavit Abraham oculos suos, viditque post tergum arietem inter vepres hærentem cornibus, quem assumens obtulit holocaustum pro filio.

And Abraham, looking about him, saw behind him a ram caught by the horns in a thicket; this he took, and offered it as a burnt-sacrifice, instead of his son.
14
And he called the name of that place, The Lord seeth. Whereupon even to this day it is said: In the mountain the Lord will see.

Appellavitque nomen loci illius, Dominus videt. Unde usque hodie dicitur: In monte Dominus videbit.

So Abraham called that spot, The Lord’s Foresight; and the saying goes to this day, On the mountain top, the Lord will see to it.
15
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, saying:

Vocavit autem angelus Domini Abraham secundo de cælo, dicens:

Once more the angel of the Lord called to Abraham out of heaven; and he said,
16
By my own self have I sworn, saith the Lord: because thou hast done this thing, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for my sake:
16
Per memetipsum juravi, dicit Dominus: quia fecisti hanc rem, et non pepercisti filio tuo unigenito propter me:
16
This message the Lord has for thee: I have taken an oath by my own name to reward thee for this act of thine, when thou wast ready to give up thy only son for my sake.
17
I will bless thee, and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the sea shore: thy seed shall possess the gates of their enemies.

benedicam tibi, et multiplicabo semen tuum sicut stellas cæli, et velut arenam quæ est in littore maris: possidebit semen tuum portas inimicorum suorum,

More and more will I bless thee, more and more will I give increase to thy posterity, till they are countless as the stars in heaven, or the sand by the sea shore; thy children shall storm the gates of their enemies;
18
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice.

et benedicentur in semine tuo omnes gentes terræ, quia obedisti voci meæ.
18
all the races of the world shall find a blessing through thy posterity, for this readiness of thine to do my bidding.
19
Abraham returned to his young men, and they went to Bersabee together, and he dwelt there.
19
Reversus est Abraham ad pueros suos, abieruntque Bersabee simul, et habitavit ibi.
19
Then Abraham went back to his servants, and took them with him to Bersabee; it was at Bersabee that Abraham made his dwelling.
20
After these things, it was told Abraham that Melcha also had borne children to Nachor his brother.

His ita gestis, nuntiatum est Abrahæ quod Melcha quoque genuisset filios Nachor fratri suo:

It was after this Abraham had news that his brother Nachor, too, had had sons by his wife Melcha.
21
Hus the firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Camuel the father of the Syrians,

Hus primogenitum, et Buz fratrem ejus, et Camuel patrem Syrorum,
21
Hus was the name of his first-born, and the next brother was called Buz; then Camuel from whom the Syrians are sprung,
22
And Cased, and Azau, and Pheldas, and Jedlaph,
22
et Cased, et Azau, Pheldas quoque et Jedlaph,
22
and Cased and Azau, Pheldas too and Jedlaph,

And Bathuel, of whom was born Rebecca: These eight did Melcha bear to Nachor Abraham’s brother.

ac Bathuel, de quo nata est Rebecca: octo istos genuit Melcha, Nachor fratri Abrahæ.

and then Bathuel, the father of Rebecca; all these eight sons were born to Nachor, Abraham’s brother, by his wife Melcha.

And his concubine, named Roma, bore Tabee, and Gaham, and Tahas, and Maacha.

Concubina vero illius, nomine Roma, peperit Tabee, et Gaham, et Thahas, et Maacha.

He had, too, a concubine called Roma; she bore him Tabee, and Gaham, and Tahas, and Maacha.
