And now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and formed thee, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, and called thee by thy name: thou art mine.

Et nunc hæc dicit Dominus creans te, Jacob, et formans te, Israël: Noli timere, quia redemi te, et vocavi te nomine tuo: meus es tu.

And now, here is a message from the Lord to Jacob, his creature, to the Israel he fashioned: Do not be afraid, I have bought thee for myself, and given thee the name thou bearest: thou belongest to me.

When thou shalt pass through the waters, I will be with thee, and the rivers shall not cover thee: when thou shalt walk in the fire, thou shalt not be burnt, and the flames shall not burn in thee:

Cum transieris per aquas, tecum ero, et flumina non operient te; cum ambulaveris in igne, non combureris, et flamma non ardebit in te.

Pass through water, and I will be with thee, so that the flood shall not drown thee; walk amid the flames, and thou shalt not be burnt, the fire shall have no power to catch thee.
3
For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I have given Egypt for thy atonement, Ethiopia and Saba for thee.

Quia ego Dominus Deus tuus, Sanctus Israël, salvator tuus, dedi propitiationem tuam Ægyptum, Æthopiam, et Saba, pro te.

I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy deliverer; I have bartered away Egypt to win thee, Ethiopia and Saba for thy ransom.
4
Since thou becamest honourable in my eyes, thou art glorious: I have loved thee, and I will give men for thee, and people for thy life.

Ex quo honorabilis factus es in oculis meis, et gloriosus, ego dilexi te, et dabo homines pro te, et populos pro anima tua.

So prized, so honoured, so dearly loved, that I am ready to give up mankind in thy place, a world to save thee.
5
Fear not, for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west.

Noli timere, quia ego tecum sum; ab oriente adducam semen tuum, et ab occidente congregabo te.

Do not be afraid, I am with thee; I will restore thy sons from the east, the west shall hear the calling of their muster-roll;
6
I will say to the north: Give up: and to the south: Keep not back: bring my sons from afar, and my daughters from the ends of the earth.

Dicam aquiloni: Da; et austro: Noli prohibere: affer filios meos de longinquo, et filias meas ab extremis terræ.

I will say to the north wind, Give them back; to the south wind, Restrain them no more; bring back these sons of mine from far away, these daughters of mine from the world’s end.

And every one that calleth upon my name, I have created him for my glory, I have formed him, and made him.

Et omnem qui invocat nomen meum, in gloriam meam creavi eum, formavi eum, et feci eum.

Whoever owns my name is my creature, made and fashioned for my glory.
8
Bring forth the people that are blind, and have eyes: that are deaf, and have ears.

Educ foras populum cæcum, et oculos habentem; surdum, et aures ei sunt.

Bring them out, then, into the light of day, this people of mine that have eyes, and still cannot see, have ears, and cannot hear.
9
All the nations are assembled together, and the tribes are gathered: who among you can declare this, and shall make us hear the former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, let them be justified, and hear, and say: It is truth.

Omnes gentes congregatæ sunt simul, et collectæ sunt tribus. Quis in vobis annuntiet istud, et quæ prima sunt audire nos faciet? Dent testes eorum, justificentur, et audiant, et dicant: Vere.

Round about us, all the nations of the world are gathered, all its tribes assemble. And now, which among you can make this claim, give us an account of events foretold long ago? Let them produce witnesses to justify their claim, so that all may listen and say, It is the truth.
10
You are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that you may know, and believe me, and understand that I myself am. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there shall be none.

Vos testes mei, dicit Dominus, et servus meus quem elegi: ut sciatis, et credatis mihi, et intelligatis quia ego ipse sum; ante me non est formatus Deus, et post me non erit.

I call you to witness, the Lord says, you and this servant of mine, on whom my choice has fallen; will you not recognize the truth, and believe me? Will you not learn to understand that I am the God you seek? None ever came into being before me, or will after me.

I am, I am the Lord: and there is no saviour besides me.

Ego sum, ego sum Dominus, et non est absque me salvator.
11
It is I, I, the Lord; no other can bring deliverance.
12
I have declared, and have saved. I have made it heard, and there was no strange one among you. You are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and I am God.

Ego annuntiavi, et salvavi; auditum feci, et non fuit in vobis alienus: vos testes mei, dicit Dominus, et ego Deus.

It was I who promised that deliverance, I who bought it; I told you of it, when there was no alien god worshipped among you; you are my witnesses to that, the Lord says. I am God,
13
And from the beginning I am the same, and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall turn it away?

Et ab initio ego ipse, et non est qui de manu mea eruat. Operabor, et quis avertet illud?

and what I was, I am; from my power there is no escaping; when I execute my designs, none can avert them.
14
Thus saith the Lord your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: For your sake I sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their bars, and the Chaldeans glorying in their ships.

Hæc dicit Dominus, redemptor vester, Sanctus Israël: Propter vos misi in Babylonem, et detraxi vectes universos, et Chaldæos in navibus suis gloriantes.

Thus says the Lord, your ransomer, the Holy One of Israel, If I send my emissaries to Babylon, casting down all its barriers, casting down the Chaldeans, with all the pride of their navies, it is for your sakes.
15
I am the Lord your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.

Ego Dominus, Sanctus vester, creans Israël, rex vester.

I, the Lord, am your Holy One, I, the maker of Israel, am your king.
16
Thus saith the Lord, who made a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters.
16
Hæc dicit Dominus, qui dedit in mari viam, et in aquis torrentibus semitam;
16
A message to you from that same Lord, who could once lead you through the sea, make a passage for you through the foaming waters;
17
Who brought forth the chariot and the horse, the army and the strong: they lay down to sleep together, and they shall not rise again: they are broken as flax, and are extinct.
17
qui eduxit quadrigam et equum, agmen et robustum: simul obdormierunt, nec resurgent; contriti sunt quasi linum, et extincti sunt.
17
could bring out chariots and horses, rank and file and chieftain together in pursuit, to fall there and never to rise again, crushed like a wick, and their light quenched.
18
Remember not former things, and look not on things of old.
18
Ne memineritis priorum, et antiqua ne intueamini.

Do not remember those old things, he says, as if you had eyes for nothing but what happened long ago;
19
Behold I do new things, and now they shall spring forth, verily you shall know them: I will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
19
Ecce ego facio nova, et nunc orientur, utique cognoscetis ea: ponam in deserto viam, et in invio flumina.
19
I mean to perform new wonders; even now they are coming to the birth; surely you will understand at last? I mean to make a causeway over the desert, with streams flowing beside it in the waste.
20
The beast of the field shall glorify me, the dragons and the ostriches: because I have given waters in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, to my chosen.

Glorificabit me bestia agri, dracones, et struthiones: quia dedi in deserto aquas, flumina in invio, ut darem potum populo meo, electo meo.

The wild things will do me honour, the serpents and the ostriches, for thus giving them water in the desert, streams in the waste; but it was for my people’s sake that I did it, to give drink to my chosen people.
21
This people have I formed for myself, they shall shew forth my praise.
21
Populum istum formavi mihi: laudem meam narrabit.
21
I made them for myself, surely they too will have praise to give me!
22
But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob, neither hast thou laboured about me, O Israel.
22
Non me invocasti, Jacob, nec laborasti in me, Israël.
22
Alas, Jacob, that my name should be forgotten, alas, Israel, that thou shouldst have troubled thyself about me so little!
23
Thou hast not offered me the ram of thy holocaust, nor hast thou glorified me with thy victims: I have not caused thee to serve with oblations, nor wearied thee with incense.
23
Non obtulisti mihi arietem holocausti tui, et victimis tuis non glorificasti me; non te servire feci in oblatione, nec laborem tibi præbui in thure.
23
No ram of thine offered in burnt-sacrifice to me, no victims of thine to do me honour; little burden have my offerings been to thee, little trouble my meed of incense!
24
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy victims. But thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thy iniquities.

Non emisti mihi argento calamum, et adipe victimarum tuarum non inebriasti me: verumtamen servire me fecisti in peccatis tuis; præbuisti mihi laborem in iniquitatibus tuis.

Scented cane thou wouldst not buy to burn for me, nor think to cheer me with the fat of sacrifice; rather, it was I that was burdened, burdened with thy sins; I that was troubled, troubled with thy faithlessness.
25
I am, I am he that blot out thy iniquities for my own sake, and I will not remember thy sins.

Ego sum, ego sum ipse qui deleo iniquitates tuas propter me, et peccatorum tuorum non recordabor.

It was I, ever I, that must be blotting out thy offences, for my own honour’s sake, effacing the memory of thy sins.

Put me in remembrance, and let us plead together: tell if thou hast any thing to justify thyself.

Reduc me in memoriam, et judicemur simul: narra si quid habes ut justificeris.

Time, now, thou shouldst remember me; come, let us settle the matter by arbitration, thou and I; tell me what plea thou hast to bring forward.
27
Thy first father sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.
27
Pater tuus primus peccavit, et interpretes tui prævaricati sunt in me:

For the guilt of thy first father, for the rebellions of thy own spokesmen against me,
28
And I have profaned the holy princes, I have given Jacob to slaughter, and Israel to reproach.
28
et contaminavi principes sanctos; dedi ad internecionem Jacob, et Israël in blasphemiam.

I brought thy inviolable princes to dishonour, gave up Jacob to destruction, Israel to the scorn of his enemies.
