|
Chapter 28
|
Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
And it came to pass in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Sedecias king of Juda, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananias the son of Azur, a prophet of Gabaon spoke to me, in the house of the Lord before the priests, and all the people, saying:
1
Et factum est in anno illo, in principio regni Sedeciæ regis Juda, in anno quarto, in mense quinto, dixit ad me Hananias filius Azur, propheta de Gabaon, in domo Domini, coram sacerdotibus et omni populo, dicens:
1
Sedecias had then but lately come to the throne of Juda; it was the fourth year of his reign. In the fifth month of that year a prophet from Gabaon, Hananias son of Azur, came up to me in the temple, in full sight of priests and worshippers.
2
Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
2
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël: Contrivi jugum regis Babylonis.
2
A message, he said, from the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: So much for the king of Babylon’s yoke! I have broken it to pieces.
3
As yet two years of days, and I will cause all the vessels of the house of the Lord to be brought back into this place, which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon.
3
Adhuc duo anni dierum, et ego referri faciam ad locum istum omnia vasa domus Domini, quæ tulit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis de loco isto, et transtulit ea in Babylonem.
3
Two years must run their course, and then all shall come back again here; all the temple treasures Nabuchodonosor took away with him to his capital at Babylon,
4
And I will bring back to this place Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Juda, and all the captives of Juda, that are gone to Babylon, saith the Lord: for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.
4
4
and the king of Juda too, Jechonias son of Joachim, with all the exiles from Juda Babylon now holds. I will bring them back, the Lord says, and break the yoke of the king of Babylon to pieces.
5
And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the Lord:
5
5
But from Jeremias this prophet Hananias had a prophet’s answer, there in the presence of the priests, and of all who stood by in the Lord’s house;
6
And Jeremias the prophet said: Amen, the Lord do so: the Lord perform thy words, which thou hast prophesied: that the vessels may be brought again into the house of the Lord, and all the captives may return out of Babylon to this place.
6
6
Amen to that! Well indeed it were if the Lord would grant this prophecy of thine fulfilment, would bring all the temple treasure home, and all the exiles at Babylon!
7
Nevertheless hear this word that I speak in thy ears, and in the ears of all the people:
7
7
Only, here is a word for thy hearing, and for the general hearing no less.
8
The prophets that have been before me, and before thee from the beginning, and have prophesied concerning many countries, and concerning great kingdoms, of war, and of affliction, and of famine.
8
8
So many prophets before thy day and mine, so many nations, such proud empires their theme, and all alike told of battle, of distress, of famine;
9
The prophet that prophesied peace: when his word shall come to pass, the prophet shall be known, whom the Lord hath sent in truth.
9
9
here is one at last that brings good news! Why then, when his words come true, none will doubt that his errand was from the Lord.
10
And Hananias the prophet took the chain from the neck of Jeremias the prophet, and broke it.
10
10
At that, Hananias took the band from Jeremias’ neck and broke it,
11
And Hananias spoke in the presence of all the people, saying: Thus saith the Lord: Even so will I break the yoke of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon after two full years from off the neck of all the nations.
11
Et ait Hananias in conspectu omnis populi, dicens: Hæc dicit Dominus: Sic confringam jugum Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis, post duos annos dierum de collo omnium gentium.
11
crying out before all the people, A message from the Lord! Thus, when two years have run their course, I will break the yoke which king Nabuchodonosor of Babylon has laid on the necks of all the nations!
12
And Jeremias the prophet went his way. And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, after that Hananias the prophet had broken the chain from off the neck of Jeremias the prophet, saying:
12
12
And Jeremias said no more, but passed on. Thus did Hananias break the band on the neck of his fellow prophet; and thereupon came the word of the Lord to Jeremias,
13
Go, and tell Hananias: Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast broken chains of wood, and thou shalt make for them chains of iron.
13
13
Go and give Hananias this message from the Lord: Wooden yoke break, iron yoke make!
14
For thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, to serve Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and they shall serve him: moreover also I have given him the beasts of the earth.
14
Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël: Jugum ferreum posui super collum cunctarum gentium istarum, ut serviant Nabuchodonosor regi Babylonis, et servient ei: insuper et bestias terræ dedi ei.
14
The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, tells thee that he is putting a yoke of iron on the necks of all the nations, subjecting them to Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon. His subjects they shall be; even over the wild beasts dominion is granted him.
15
And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet: Hear now, Hananias: the Lord hath not sent thee, and thou hast made this people to trust in a lie.
15
15
This, too, Jeremias said to his fellow prophet, Listen, Hananias; errand from the Lord thou hast none, thou art cheating yonder people with false hopes.
16
Therefore thus saith the Lord: Behold I will send thee away from off the face of the earth: this year shalt thou die: for thou hast spoken against the Lord.
16
Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus: Ecce ego mittam te a facie terræ: hoc anno morieris: adversum enim Dominum locutus es.
16
And this doom the Lord has uttered: I mean to banish thee from this earth altogether; thou shalt die within the year, for this language of rebellion against the Lord.
17
And Hananias the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month.
17
Et mortuus est Hananias propheta in anno illo, mense septimo.
17
Hananias died that year, before seven months were over.
