Chapter 41

Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
1
The seventh month had come; and now Ismahel, son of Nathanias, son of Elisama, one of the royal princes and the king’s vassals, came with ten followers to Masphath, where Godolias was, and at Masphath they sat at table together.
1
And it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ismahel the son of Nathanias, the son of Elisama of the royal blood, and the nobles of the king, and ten men with him, came to Godolias the son of Ahicam into Masphath: and they ate bread there together in Masphath.
2
2
There and then, at the sword’s point, Ismahel and his ten men put Godolias to death. So perished Godolias, son of Ahicam, son of Saphan, that held the king of Babylon’s warrant to rule the country.
2
And Ismahel the son of Nathanias arose, and the ten men that were with him, and they struck Godolias the son of Ahicam, the son of Saphan with the sword, and slew him whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.
3
3
Such Jews as were with Godolias at Masphath, such Chaldaean soldiers as he found there, Ismahel despatched at the same time.
3
Ismahel slew also all the Jews that were with Godolias in Masphath, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the soldiers.
4
Secundo autem die postquam occiderat Godoliam, nullo adhuc sciente,
4
And the day after Godolias’ murder, before the news of it was out,
4
And on the second day after he had killed Godolias, no man yet knowing it,
5
5
came eighty pilgrims from Sichem, Silo, and Samaria, beards shaven, garments rent, in mourning all of them, with bloodless offerings and incense for the Lord’s temple.
5
There came some from Sichem, and from Silo, and from Samaria, fourscore men, with their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and mourning: and they had offerings and incense in their hand, to offer in the house of the Lord.
6
6
Out came Ismahel son of Nathanias from Masphath to meet them, and wept ever as he went; Welcome, said he, from Godolias son of Ahicam!
6
And Ismahel the son of Nathanias went forth from Masphath to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and when he had met them, he said to them: Come to Godolias, the son of Ahicam.
7
7
And when they had reached the middle of the town, just by the cistern, they were slain by Ismahel and his men;
7
And when they were come to the midst of the city, Ismahel the son of Nathanias, slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he and the men that were with him.
8
8
all except ten of them, who pleaded for their lives and told Ismahel they had a hoard of wheat, barley, oil and honey hidden away under their lands; these were spared the fate of the rest.
8
But ten men were found among them, that said to Ismahel: Kill us not: for we have stores in the field, of wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. And he forbore, and slew them not with their brethren.
9
Lacus autem in quem projecerat Ismahel omnia cadavera virorum quos percussit propter Godoliam, ipse est quem fecit rex Asa propter Baasa regem Israël: ipsum replevit Ismahel filius Nathaniæ occisis.
9
When he slew the companions of Godolias, Ismahel had thrown their bodies into the cistern; it was one which king Asa had made to defend the place against Baasa, king of Israel; now, Ismahel’s massacre filled it to the brim.
9
And the pit into which Ismahel cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he slew because of Godolias, is the same that king Asa made, for fear of Baasa the king of Israel: the same did Ismahel the son of Nathanias fill with them that were slain.
10
10
Thus there was no longer a remnant at Masphath; the king’s daughters, and all the other folk left there by Nabuzardan under the care of Godolias, Ismahel took off with him as his captives, and so would have marched away into the Ammonite country.
10
Then Ismahel carried away captive all the remnant of the people that were in Masphath: the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in Masphath: whom Nabuzardan the general of the army had committed to Godolias the son of Ahicam. And Ismahel the son of Nathanias took them, and he departed, to go over to the children of Ammon.
11
11
But Johanan, son of Caree, and the other army chieftains that were on his side, no sooner heard the ill news of what Ismahel had done
11
But Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the fighting men that were with him, heard of the evil that Ismahel the son of Nathanias had done.
12
12
than they mustered all their men to give him battle, and caught up with him at the pool of Gabaon.
12
And taking all the men, they went out to fight against Ismahel the son of Nathanias, and they found him by the great waters that are in Gabaon.
13
13
A welcome sight it was to Ismahel’s company, when they saw Johanan, son of Caree, and the other chieftains approaching;
13
And when all the people that were with Ismahel, had seen Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the fighting men that were with him, they rejoiced.
14
14
back went all the prisoners to Masphath, and threw in their lot with Johanan instead;
14
And all the people whom Ismahel had taken, went back to Masphath: and they returned and went to Johanan the son of Caree.
15
15
Ismahel fled at the sight of him, and reached the Ammonite country with only eight men at his back.
15
But Ismahel the son of Nathanias fled with eight men, from the face of Johanan, and went to the children of Ammon.
16
16
Johanan and his fellow chieftains would not leave at Masphath this remnant they had rescued from Ismahel after the murder of Godolias; all the fighting men, the women and children, the eunuchs, who had returned with them from Gabaon.
16
Then Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the soldiers that were with him, took all the remnant of the people whom they had recovered from Ismahel the son of Nathanias, from Masphath, after that he had slain Godolias the son of Ahicam: valiant men for war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gabaon:
17
17
They went off and made their home for a time at Chamaan, near Bethlehem, thinking to take refuge in Egypt
17
And they departed, and sat as sojourners in Chamaam, which is near Bethlehem: in order to go forward, and enter into Egypt,
18
a facie Chaldæorum: timebant enim eos, quia percusserat Ismahel filius Nathaniæ Godoliam filium Ahicam, quem præposuerat rex Babylonis in terra Juda.
18
from the vengeance of the Chaldaeans. From these they had much to fear, now that Ismahel son of Nathanias had murdered Godolias son of Ahicam, the king of Babylon’s own representative in Juda.
18
From the face of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ismahel the son of Nathanias had slain Godolias the son of Ahicam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor in the land of Juda.
