Chapter 14
|
Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
1
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:
1
The Lord also told Moses,
2
This is the rite of a leper, when he is to be cleansed: he shall be brought to the priest:
2
Hic est ritus leprosi, quando mundandus est. Adducetur ad sacerdotem:
2
This is the ceremonial to be used when a leper is to be pronounced no longer unclean. He must needs present himself before the priest;
3
Who going out of the camp when he shall find that the leprosy is cleansed,
3
3
the priest, therefore, will go out of the camp to find him, and if it appears that leprosy no longer defiles him,
4
Shall command him that is to be purified, to offer for himself two living sparrows, which it is lawful to eat, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.
4
4
he will tell him what offerings to make by way of purgation for himself. These are, two living birds, of such a kind as may be used for food, cedar-wood, and scarlet stuff, and hyssop.
5
And he shall command one of the sparrows to be immolated in an earthen vessel over living waters:
5
5
One of the birds must have its blood shed over spring water held in an earthenware pot;
6
But the other that is alive he shall dip, with the cedar wood, and the scarlet and the hyssop, in the blood of the sparrow that is immolated:
6
6
the one which is left alive must be dipped (together with the cedar-wood, the scarlet stuff, and the hyssop) into the dead bird’s blood,
7
Wherewith he shall sprinkle him that is to be cleansed seven times, that he may be rightly purified: and he shall let go the living sparrow, that it may fly into the field.
7
7
and with this the priest must sprinkle the defiled man seven times, to effect his due cleansing. Then the living bird must be allowed to fly away into the open.
8
And when the man hath washed his clothes, he shall shave all the hair of his body, and shall be washed with water: and being purified, he shall enter into the camp, yet so that he tarry without his own tent seven days:
8
Cumque laverit homo vestimenta sua, radet omnes pilos corporis, et lavabitur aqua: purificatusque ingredietur castra, ita dumtaxat ut maneat extra tabernaculum suum septem diebus,
8
And now the man must wash his clothes, shave the hair on his body, and bathe in water; so purified, he will enter the camp, but on the condition that he does not go into his tent for a whole week.
9
And on the seventh day he shall shave the hair of his head, and his beard and his eyebrows, and the hair of all his body. And having washed again his clothes, and his body,
9
9
On the seventh day he must shave all his hair, head and beard and eyebrows and all, and he must wash again, both his clothes and his body.
10
On the eighth day he shall take two lambs without blemish, and an ewe of a year old without blemish, and three tenths of flour tempered with oil for a sacrifice, and a sextary of oil apart.
10
10
On the eighth day he will take two lambs and a yearling ewe, all without blemish, three tenths of a bushel of flour, kneaded with oil, for a bloodless offering, and a pint of oil besides.
11
And when the priest that purifieth the man, hath presented him, and all these things before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony,
11
Cumque sacerdos purificans hominem, statuerit eum, et hæc omnia coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi testimonii,
11
The priest who is pronouncing him clean will bring him into the divine presence, together with these gifts of his, at the door of the tabernacle which bears record of me;
12
He shall take a lamb, and offer it for a trespass offering with the sextary of oil: and having offered all before the Lord,
12
12
and there he will take one of the lambs and offer it as a victim for wrong done. He will take the pint of oil, too, and all the rest, and hold them up in the Lord’s presence.
13
He shall immolate the lamb, where the victim for sin is wont to be immolated, and the holocaust, that is, in the holy place: for as that which is for sin, so also the victim for a trespass offering pertaineth to the priest: it is holy of holies.
13
13
The lamb must be immolated on holy ground, where the offerings for faults and the burnt-sacrifices are offered; and the victim for wrong done, like the victim for a fault, becomes the property of the priest; it is set apart for holy uses.
14
And the priest taking of the blood of the victim that was immolated for trespass, shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot:
14
14
The priest will take some of the blood from this victim which is offered for wrong done, and set a mark with it on the man he is pronouncing clean; on the tip of his right ear, his right thumb, and the great toe of his right foot.
15
And he shall pour of the sextary of oil into his own left hand,
15
et de olei sextario mittet in manum suam sinistram,
15
Then he will take some of the oil in his left hand,
16
And shall dip his right finger in it, and sprinkle it before the Lord seven times.
16
tingetque digitum dextrum in eo, et asperget coram Domino septies.
16
dip a finger of his right hand in it, and sprinkle it seven times in the Lord’s presence.
17
And the rest of the oil in his left hand, he shall pour upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot, and upon the blood that was shed for trespass,
17
17
The rest of the oil in his left hand he will use to anoint the man he is cleansing; over the victim’s blood smeared on ear and finger and toe,
18
And upon his head.
18
et super caput ejus.
18
and finally on his head.
19
And he shall pray for him before the Lord, and shall offer the sacrifice for sin: then shall he immolate the holocaust,
19
19
So he will intercede for him in the Lord’s presence, and offer, first a sacrifice for his fault, then a burnt-sacrifice;
20
And put it on the altar with the libations thereof, and the man shall be rightly cleansed.
20
20
this he will put on the altar, with its accompanying gifts, and so the man will be duly declared clean.
21
But if he be poor, and his hand cannot find the things aforesaid: he shall take a lamb for an offering for trespass, that the priest may pray for him, and a tenth part of flour tempered with oil for a sacrifice, and a sextary of oil,
21
21
If he is poor, and cannot lay his hand on all the victims aforesaid, he must bring a lamb by way of offering for wrong done, with which the priest will make intercession for him, the tenth of a bushel of flour, kneaded with oil, for a bloodless offering, and a pint of oil,
22
And two turtles or two young pigeons, of which one may be for sin, and the other for a holocaust:
22
22
and two turtle-doves or two young pigeons, one by way of offering for his fault, and the other as a burnt-sacrifice.
23
And he shall offer them on the eighth day of his purification to the priest, at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony before the Lord.
23
offeretque ea die octavo purificationis suæ sacerdoti, ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii coram Domino.
23
These he will bring before the priest at the tabernacle door in the divine presence, on the eighth day of the cleansing.
24
And the priest receiving the lamb for trespass, and the sextary of oil, shall elevate them together.
24
24
The priest will take the lamb, the offering for wrong done, and the pint of oil, and hold them up together;
25
And the lamb being immolated, he shall put of the blood thereof upon the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and the great toe of his right foot:
25
25
then he will immolate the lamb, and set a mark with its blood on the man he is pronouncing clean, on the right ear, the right thumb, the great toe of the right foot.
26
But he shall pour part of the oil into his own left hand,
26
olei vero partem mittet in manum suam sinistram,
26
Then he will take some of the oil in his left hand,
27
And dipping the finger of his right hand in it, he shall sprinkle it seven times before the Lord:
27
in quo tingens digitum dextræ manus asperget septies coram Domino:
27
dip in his right hand, sprinkle the oil seven times in the Lord’s presence,
28
And he shall touch the tip of the right ear of him that is cleansed, and the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot, in the place of the blood that was shed for trespass.
28
28
anoint the stains on ear, thumb and toe,
29
And the other part of the oil that is in his left hand, he shall pour upon the head of the purified person, that he may appease the Lord for him.
29
29
and pour the rest of the oil in his hand over the head of the man who is being cleansed, to win him the Lord’s favour again.
30
And he shall offer a turtle, or young pigeon,
30
et turturem sive pullum columbæ offeret,
30
Finally he will offer the two birds, whether turtle-dove, or young pigeon;
31
One for trespass, and the other for a holocaust, with their libations.
31
31
one of them as for a fault and one by way of burnt-sacrifice, together with the gifts that accompany it.
32
This is the sacrifice of a leper, that is not able to have all things that appertain to his cleansing.
32
32
Such is the offering to be made by a leper who cannot afford the full price of his cleansing.
33
And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
33
33
This was a further message the Lord gave to Moses and Aaron:
34
When you shall come into the land of Chanaan, which I will give you for a possession, if there be the plague of leprosy in a house,
34
34
When you reach the home I mean to give you in the land of Chanaan, it may be that a house will suffer infection.
35
He whose house it is, shall go and tell the priest, saying: It seemeth to me, that there is the plague of leprosy in my house,
35
35
If so, the owner of it will go and tell the priest that his house is suspect of leprosy;
36
And he shall command, that they carry forth all things out of the house, before he go into it, and see whether it have the leprosy, lest all things become unclean that are in the house. And afterwards he shall go in to view the leprosy of the house.
36
36
and the priest, before going to ascertain whether it is leprous or not, will have everything taken out of the house, for fear that all its contents might become defiled. Then he will go in to examine the infection in the house;
37
And if he see in the walls thereof as it were little dints, disfigured with paleness or redness, and lower than all the rest,
37
37
and if he sees dents in the surface of the walls that are pale or reddish in colour,
38
He shall go out of the door of the house, and forthwith shut it up seven days,
38
egredietur ostium domus, et statim claudet illam septem diebus.
38
he will go out of doors and shut the house up for a week.
39
And returning on the seventh day, he shall look upon it. If he find that the leprosy is spread,
39
Reversusque die septimo, considerabit eam: si invenerit crevisse lepram,
39
And if, when he comes back to examine it on the seventh day, he finds that the infection has spread,
40
He shall command, that the stones wherein the leprosy is, be taken out, and cast without the city into an unclean place:
40
jubebit erui lapides in quibus lepra est, et projici eos extra civitatem in locum immundum:
40
he will order the stones that are infected to be prised out, and thrown into a refuse pit, away from the city;
41
And that the house be scraped on the inside round about, and the dust of the scraping be scattered without the city into an unclean place:
41
41
the inside of the house, too, must be scraped all round, and the dust scraped from it must also be scattered over the refuse pit.
42
And that other stones be laid in the place of them that were taken away, and the house be plastered with other mortar.
42
42
Then other stones will be put in, in place of the old, and the house will be plastered afresh.
43
But if, after the stones be taken out, and the dust scraped off, and it be plastered with other earth,
43
43
If, after the removal of the stones, and the scraping, and the new plastering,
44
The priest going in perceive that the leprosy is returned, and the walls full of spots, it is a lasting leprosy, and the house is unclean:
44
44
the priest comes in and finds that the infection has returned, and the walls are still disfigured with spots, this is malignant leprosy, and the house is unclean.
45
And they shall destroy it forthwith, and shall cast the stones and timber thereof, and all the dust without the town into an unclean place.
45
45
It must be destroyed at once, stone and wood and plaster alike must be thrown into a refuse pit, away from the town.
46
He that entereth into the house when it is shut, shall be unclean until evening,
46
46
Anyone who has entered it since the priest shut it up will be unclean till evening comes,
47
And he that sleepeth in it, and eateth any thing, shall wash his clothes.
47
47
and anyone who has slept or eaten there must wash his clothes.
48
But if the priest going in perceive that the leprosy is not spread in the house, after it was plastered again, he shall purify it, it being cured,
48
48
But if the priest finds that the infection has not spread in the house after the new plastering, he will cleanse it, in token that it is now free of disease.
49
And for the purification thereof he shall take two sparrows, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:
49
49
To effect this cleansing, he will take two birds, some cedar-wood, and scarlet stuff, and hyssop,
50
And having immolated one sparrow in an earthen vessel over living waters,
50
et immolato uno passere in vase fictili super aquas vivas,
50
shed the blood of one bird into spring water in an earthenware pot,
51
He shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living sparrow, and shall dip all in the blood of the sparrow that is immolated, and in the living water, and he shall sprinkle the house seven times:
51
51
dip the cedar-wood, the scarlet stuff, the hyssop, and the living bird into the water stained with the dead bird’s blood, and sprinkle it over the house seven times.
52
And shall purify it as well with the blood of the sparrow, as with the living water, and with the living sparrow, and with the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet.
52
52
So, by the use of blood and water and a living bird and cedar-wood and hyssop and scarlet stuff, the cleansing will be effected;
53
And when he hath let go the sparrow to fly freely away into the field, he shall pray for the house, and it shall be rightly cleansed.
53
53
and letting the bird fly away into the open, the priest will make intercession for the house, and it will be duly declared clean.
54
This is the law of every kind of leprosy and stroke.
54
Ista est lex omnis lepræ et percussuræ,
54
Such are the rules for all leprosy and scab,
55
Of the leprosy of garments and houses,
55
lepræ vestium et domorum,
55
for the infection that breaks out in garments or in houses,
56
Of a scar and of blisters breaking out, of a shining spot, and when the colours are diversely changed:
56
cicatricis et erumpentium papularum, lucentis maculæ, et in varias species, coloribus immutatis,
56
for scars and ulcers, and for shiny patches on the skin that change their colour;
57
That it may be known when a thing is clean or unclean.
57
57
such are the means for ascertaining when it is time to declare anything clean or unclean.
