Locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:

The Lord gave Moses this message
1
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Loquere ad filios Israël, et dices ad eos: Cum ingressi fueritis terram habitationis vestræ, quam ego dabo vobis,
2
for the sons of Israel: Here are rules to be kept, when you have reached the settled home I mean to give you.
2
Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: When you shall be come into the land of your habitation, which I will give you,
3
et feceritis oblationem Domino in holocaustum, aut victimam, vota solventes, vel sponte offerentes munera, aut in solemnitatibus vestris adolentes odorem suavitatis Domino, de bobus sive de ovibus:
3
When you offer the Lord ox or sheep in burnt-sacrifice, or by way of welcome-offering (whether in payment of a vow, or out of devotion, or because you would greet the Lord with acceptable fragrance on occasion of some solemn feast),
3
And shall make an offering to the Lord, for a holocaust, or a victim, paying your vows, or voluntarily offering gifts, or in your solemnities burning a sweet savour unto the Lord, of oxen or of sheep:
4
offeret quicumque immolaverit victimam, sacrificium similæ, decimam partem ephi, conspersæ oleo, quod mensuram habebit quartam partem hin:

the man who is immolating such a victim must make the Lord a bloodless offering as well. This must be a tenth of a bushel of flour, kneaded in three pints of oil,

Whosoever immolateth the victim, shall offer a sacrifice of fine flour, the tenth part of an ephi, tempered with the fourth part of a hin of oil:
5
et vinum ad liba fundenda ejusdem mensuræ dabit in holocaustum sive in victimam. Per agnos singulos
5
with the same measure of wine for a libation, for every lamb offered.

And he shall give the same measure of wine to pour out in libations for the holocaust or for the victim. For every lamb,
6
et arietes erit sacrificium similæ duarum decimarum, quæ conspersa sit oleo tertiæ partis hin:
6
For every ram a fifth of a bushel of flour, two quarts of oil,
6
And for every ram there shall be a sacrifice of flour of two tenths, which shall be tempered with the third part of a hin of oil:
7
et vinum ad libamentum tertiæ partis ejusdem mensuræ offeret in odorem suavitatis Domino.

and the same measure of wine, a fragrant offering for the Lord’s acceptance.

And he shall offer the third part of the same measure of wine for the libation, for a sweet savour to the Lord.
8
Quando vero de bobus feceris holocaustum aut hostiam, ut impleas votum vel pacificas victimas,
8
But when, by way of burnt-sacrifice, or offering for a vow, or welcome-offering, thy victim is a bullock,
8
But when thou offerest a holocaust or sacrifice of oxen, to fulfil thy vow or for victims of peace offerings,
9
dabis per singulos boves similæ tres decimas conspersæ oleo, quod habeat medium mensuræ hin:
9
with each bullock thou must use three tenths of a bushel of flour, six pints of oil,

Thou shalt give for every ox three tenths of flour tempered with half a hin of oil,
10
et vinum ad liba fundenda ejusdem mensuræ in oblationem suavissimi odoris Domino.
10
and the same measure of wine, a fragrant offering, this too, for the Lord’s acceptance.
10
And wine for libations of the same measure, for an offering of most sweet savour to the Lord.

A separate offering must be made

Thus shalt thou do

per singulos boves et arietis et agnos et hædos.

to go with each bullock, or ram, or lamb, or kid.

For every ox and ram and lamb and kid.

Tam indigenæ quam peregrini

Native-born or foreign residents,

Both they that are born in the land, and the strangers
14
eodem ritu offerent sacrificia.

all must use the same rite in doing sacrifice;
14
Shall offer sacrifices after the same rite.
15
Unum præceptum erit atque judicium tam vobis quam advenis terræ.
15
precept and award are binding on you and on the aliens that dwell with you, without distinction.
15
There shall be all one law and judgment both for you and for them who are strangers in the land.

And the Lord gave Moses this command,

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Loquere filiis Israël, et dices ad eos:

to be laid on the sons of Israel:

Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them:
18
Cum veneritis in terram, quam dabo vobis,
18
When you have reached the land I mean to give you,
18
When you are come into the land which I will give you,
19
et comederitis de panibus regionis illius, separabitis primitias Domino
19
you must not eat the bread its harvest yields without assigning to the Lord first-fruits
19
And shall eat of the bread of that country, you shall separate firstfruits to the Lord,
20
de cibis vestris. Sicut de areis primitias separatis,
20
from your table. Just as you set apart first-fruits when your corn is threshed,
20
Of the things you eat. As you separate firstfruits of your barnfloors:
21
ita et de pulmentis dabitis primitiva Domino.
21
you must give the Lord the first share when your dough is kneaded.
21
So also shall you give firstfruits of your dough to the Lord.
22
Quod si per ignorantiam præterieritis quidquam horum, quæ locutus est Dominus ad Moysen,

It may be you will neglect one of these commandments through inadvertence; so many has the Lord given to Moses
22
And if through ignorance you omit any of these things, which the Lord hath spoken to Moses,
23
et mandavit per eum ad vos, a die qua cœpit jubere et ultra,
23
to be handed on to you, from the day when first he spoke to you till now.
23
And by him hath commanded you, from the day that he began to command and thenceforward,
24
oblitaque fuerit facere multitudo: offeret vitulum de armento, holocaustum in odorem suavissimum Domino, et sacrificum ejus ac liba, ut cæremoniæ postulant, hircumque pro peccato:
24
If it is the whole congregation that has thus unwittingly offended, they must offer a bullock, a burnt-sacrifice to please the Lord with the smell of its burning, and the bloodless offering and libations which due order demands; a goat, too, by way of offering for a fault.

And the multitude have forgotten to do it: they shall offer a calf out of the herd, a holocaust for a most sweet savour to the Lord, and the sacrifice and libations thereof, as the ceremonies require, and a buck goat for sin:
25
et rogabit sacerdos pro omni multitudine filiorum Israël, et dimittetur eis, quoniam non sponte peccaverunt, nihilominus offerentes incensum Domino pro se et pro peccato atque errore suo:

So the priest will make intercession for the whole congregation of Israel, and their fault shall be pardoned. It was an unwitting offence, and even so they have brought the Lord burnt-sacrifice, and a victim for fault, to atone for their error.

And the priest shall pray for all the multitude of the children of Israel: and it shall be forgiven them, because they sinned ignorantly, offering notwithstanding a burnt offering to the Lord for themselves and for their sin and their ignorance:
26
et dimittetur universæ plebi filiorum Israël, et advenis qui peregrinantur inter eos: quoniam culpa est omnis populi per ignorantiam.

When the whole congregation is guilty of such a fault through inadvertence, not only the people of Israel, but all the aliens that dwell among them, will receive forgiveness.
26
And it shall be forgiven all the people of the children of Israel: and the strangers that sojourn among them: because it is the fault of all the people through ignorance.
27
Quod si anima una nesciens peccaverit, offeret capram anniculam pro peccato suo:
27
If it is one person only that has unwittingly offended, the sacrifice due for the fault will be a yearling she-goat;
27
But if one soul shall sin ignorantly, he shall offer a she goat of a year old for his sin.
28
et deprecabitur pro ea sacerdos, quod inscia peccaverit coram Domino: impetrabitque ei veniam, et dimittetur illi.
28
and when the priest makes intercession for what was inadvertently done amiss, grace and pardon will be given.

And the priest shall pray for him, because he sinned ignorantly before the Lord: and he shall obtain his pardon, and it shall be forgiven him.
29
Tam indigenis quam advenis una lex erit omnium, qui peccaverint ignorantes.
29
This law about faults of inadvertence must be observed by all alike, native-born or foreign resident.
29
The same law shall be for all that sin by ignorance, whether they be natives or strangers.
30
Anima vero, quæ per superbiam aliquid commiserit, sive civis sit ille, sive peregrinus (quoniam adversus Dominum rebellis fuit), peribit de populo suo:
30
But if anyone, citizen or alien, is guilty of an offence through pride, and in a spirit of rebellion against the Lord, he is lost to his people.
30
But the soul that committeth any thing through pride, whether he be born in the land or a stranger (because he hath been rebellious against the Lord) shall be cut off from among his people:
31
verbum enim Domini contempsit, et præceptum illius fecit irritum: idcirco delebitur, et portabit iniquitatem suam.
31
Would he despise the Lord’s word, annul his commandment? That fault deserves death, and he will be held to account for it.
31
For he hath contemned the word of the Lord, and made void his precept: therefore shall he be destroyed, and shall bear his iniquity.
32
Factum est autem, cum essent filii Israël in solitudine, et invenissent hominem colligentem ligna in die sabbati,
32
It happened once, as the Israelites were passing through the desert that a man was found gathering firewood on the sabbath day.
32
And it came to pass, when the children of Israel were in the wilderness, and had found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day,
33
obtulerunt eum Moysi et Aaron et universæ multitudini.
33
When he was brought before Moses and Aaron and the common assembly of the people,
33
That they brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole multitude.
34
Qui recluserunt eum in carcerem, nescientes quid super eo facere deberent.
34
they put him in ward, uncertain what they should do with him.
34
And they put him into prison, not knowing what they should do with him.
35
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Morte moriatur homo iste: obruat eum lapidibus omnis turba extra castra.
35
But the Lord said to Moses, His life must pay for it; he must be stoned by the whole multitude, away from the camp.
35
And the Lord said to Moses: Let that man die, let all the multitude stone him without the camp.
36
Cumque eduxissent eum foras, obruerunt lapidibus, et mortuus est, sicut præceperat Dominus.
36
So they took him out and stoned him to death, as the Lord had bidden them.
36
And when they had brought him out, they stoned him, and he died as the Lord had commanded.
37
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:
37
This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses,
37
The Lord also said to Moses:
38
Loquere filiis Israël, et dices ad eos ut faciant sibi fimbrias per angulos palliorum, ponentes in eis vittas hyacinthinas:
38
Bid the Israelites pass blue cords through the corners of their cloaks, and hang tassels on them;
38
Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt tell them to make to themselves fringes in the corners of their garments, putting in them ribands of blue:
39
quas cum viderint, recordentur omnium mandatorum Domini, nec sequantur cogitationes suas et oculos per res varias fornicantes,
39
reminding themselves, as they look on these, of all the commandments the Lord has given them. They must not let their thoughts and eyes wander free, into all manner of unfaithfulness,
39
That when they shall see them, they may remember all the commandments of the Lord, and not follow their own thoughts and eyes going astray after divers things,
40
sed magis memores præceptorum Domini faciant ea, sintque sancti Deo suo.
40
but rather bethink them of the Lord’s decrees and carry them out, a people set apart for their God;
40
But rather being mindful of the precepts of the Lord, may do them and be holy to their God.
41
Ego Dominus Deus vester, qui eduxi vos de terra Ægypti, ut essem Deus vester.
41
and that God the Lord, who brought them out of the land of Egypt to make them his own people.
41
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that I might be your God.
