Chapter 32
|
Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
And the sons of Ruben and Gad had many flocks of cattle, and their substance in beasts was infinite. And when they saw the lands of Jazer and Galaad fit for feeding cattle,
1
1
The tribes of Ruben and Gad were rich in flocks, and their herds were past all reckoning. And now, seeing how well fitted were the lands of Jazer and Galaad to feed beasts,
2
They came to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and the princes of the multitude, and said:
2
2
they brought a petition to Moses, and the high priest Eleazar, and the rulers of the people.
3
Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nemra, Hesebon, and Eleale, and Saban, and Nebo, and Beon,
3
Ataroth, et Dibon, et Jazer, et Nemra, Hesebon, et Eleale, et Saban, et Nebo, et Beon,
3
Here is Ataroth, they said, here are Dibon, and Jazer, and Nemra, and Hesebon, and Eleale, and Saban, and Nebo, and Beon,
4
The land, which the Lord hath conquered in the sight of the children of Israel, is a very fertile soil for the feeding of beasts: and we thy servants have very much cattle:
4
4
all given over by the Lord into the hands of Israel at the first onslaught; and all of this is good grazing land. My lord, we have many beasts to feed,
5
And we pray thee, if we have found favour in thy sight, that thou give it to us thy servants in possession, and make us not pass over the Jordan.
5
5
and we would ask a favour of thee; grant us this land for our portion, instead of making us cross the Jordan to win it.
6
And Moses answered them: What, shall your brethren go to fight, and will you sit here?
6
6
What, answered Moses, are your brethren to go and fight while you sit idle here?
7
Why do ye overturn the minds of the children of Israel, that they may not dare to pass into the place which the Lord hath given them?
7
cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël, ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus?
7
Would you daunt the spirits of the Israelites, so that they have not the courage to cross over into the land which the Lord means to give them?
8
Was it not thus your fathers did, when I sent from Cadesbarne to view the land?
8
8
Why, this was what your fathers did, when I sent them from Cades-Barne to bring back a report of the land;
9
And when they were come as far as the valley of the cluster, having viewed all the country, they overturned the hearts of the children of Israel, that they should not enter into the coasts, which the Lord gave them.
9
cumque venissent usque ad Vallem botri, lustrata omni regione, subverterunt cor filiorum Israël, ut non intrarent fines, quos eis Dominus dedit.
9
they passed through the whole extent of it, until they reached the Valley of Grapes, and came back to daunt the spirits of their fellow-Israelites, so that none of them ever entered the territory which the Lord had assigned to them.
10
And he swore in his anger, saying:
10
Qui iratus juravit, dicens:
10
So angry was he that he bound himself by an oath,
11
If these men, that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land, which I promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: because they would not follow me,
11
Si videbunt homines isti, qui ascenderunt ex Ægypto a viginti annis et supra, terram, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob: et noluerunt sequi me,
11
None of the men who made their way out of Egypt and then would not follow me, men of twenty years and more, shall ever see the land which was my promised gift to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
12
Except Caleb the son of Jephone the Cenezite, and Josue the son of Nun: these have fulfilled my will.
12
præter Caleb filium Jephone Cenezæum, et Josue filium Nun: isti impleverunt voluntatem meam.
12
None of them, except Caleb the son of Jephone and Josue the son of Nun, the men who carried out my will.
13
And the Lord being angry against Israel, led them about through the desert forty years, until the whole generation, that had done evil in his sight, was consumed.
13
Iratusque Dominus adversum Israël, circumduxit eum per desertum quadraginta annis, donec consumeretur universa generatio, quæ fecerat malum in conspectu ejus.
13
Still angry, he led us this way and that through the desert, till the generation that had offended him died out.
14
And behold, said he, you are risen up instead of your fathers, the increase and offspring of sinful men, to augment the fury of the Lord against Israel.
14
14
And now you come forward in the spirit of your fathers, the heirs and scions of their guilt, to make the Lord more angry with Israel than ever.
15
For if you will not follow him, he will leave the people in the wilderness, and you shall be the cause of the destruction of all.
15
15
Refuse to follow him, and he will leave his people here in the desert so you will be the death of us all.
16
But they coming near, said: We will make sheepfolds, and stalls for our cattle, and strong cities for our children:
16
At illi prope accedentes, dixerunt: Caulas ovium fabricabimus, et stabula jumentorum, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas:
16
But still they came closer, and would have their say; We mean only to build folds for our sheep, byres for our cattle, and cities where our children can dwell in safety;
17
And we ourselves will go armed and ready for battle before the children of Israel, until we bring them in unto their places. Our little ones, and all we have, shall be in walled cities, for fear of the ambushes of the inhabitants.
17
17
then we will go forward, armed and girded for battle, in the van of Israel, until we have won them their territory. We must have walled cities to protect our children and our possessions from sudden attack by our neighbours;
18
We will not return into our houses until the children of Israel possess their inheritance:
18
Non revertemur in domos nostras, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam:
18
but we will not go back to these homes of ours till the other Israelites have won their inheritance;
19
Neither will we seek any thing beyond the Jordan, because we have already our possession on the east side thereof,
19
nec quidquam quæremus trans Jordanem, quia jam habemus nostram possessionem in orientali ejus plaga.
19
and we will not demand any lands on the further side of Jordan, our portion once secured to us on the east of it.
20
And Moses said to them: If you do what you promise, go on well appointed for war before the Lord:
20
20
Be as good as your word, then, Moses said; arm yourselves to do battle under the Lord’s eye,
21
And let every fighting man pass over the Jordan, until the Lord overthrow his enemies:
21
et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos,
21
and cross over Jordan in battle array, all of you that are fighting men, till the Lord has overthrown his enemies
22
And all the land be brought under him, then shall you be blameless before the Lord and before Israel, and you shall obtain the countries that you desire, before the Lord.
22
22
and won the whole land for himself. So neither the Lord nor Israel will have any fault to find with you, and you shall hold, under the eye of the Lord’s favour, the territory of your choice.
23
But if you do not what you say, no man can doubt but you sin against God: and know ye, that your sin shall overtake you.
23
23
If you do not make good your word, you will be sinning openly against God; and be sure that your sin will not go unpunished.
24
Build therefore cities for your children, and folds and stalls for your sheep and beasts, and accomplish what you have promised.
24
24
Build cities for your families, byres and folds for your sheep and cattle, and then fulfil your promise.
25
And the children of Gad and Ruben said to Moses: We are thy servants, we will do what my lord commandeth.
25
25
We are thy servants, the men of Gad and Ruben said to Moses, and will do as our master bids;
26
We will leave our children, and our wives and sheep and cattle in the cities of Galaad:
26
26
leave children and wives, sheep and cattle in the cities of Galaad,
27
And we thy servants all well appointed will march on to the war, as thou, my lord, speakest.
27
27
and go out ourselves, armed for battle, as servants at their master’s command.
28
Moses therefore commanded Eleazar the priest, and Josue the son of Nun, and the princes of the families of all the tribes of Israel, and said to them:
28
28
So Moses gave the word to the high priest Eleazar, and Josue the son of Nun, and the heads of all the clans in Israel,
29
If the children of Gad, and the children of Ruben pass with you over the Jordan, all armed for war before the Lord, and the land be made subject to you: give them Galaad in possession.
29
29
that the tribes of Ruben and Gad were to receive Galaad as their portion once the whole land was conquered, if they would consent to let all their armed men cross the Jordan and do battle under the Lord’s eye with the rest.
30
But if they will not pass armed with you into the land of Chanaan, let them receive places to dwell in among you.
30
Sin autem noluerint transire armati vobiscum in terram Chanaan, inter vos habitandi accipiant loca.
30
If they would not undertake to help carry the war into Chanaan on those terms, then they must wait and win their portion among the other tribes.
31
And the children of Gad, and the children of Ruben answered: As the Lord hath spoken to his servants, so will we do:
31
31
But Ruben and Gad protested that they were willing to yield the Lord the service he asked of them;
32
We will go armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and we confess that we have already received our possession beyond the Jordan.
32
ipsi armati pergemus coram Domino in terram Chanaan, et possessionem jam suscepisse nos confitemur trans Jordanem.
32
to invade Chanaan under his eye, and still be content with the portion granted them on the further side of Jordan.
33
Moses therefore gave to the children of Gad and of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasses the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sehon king of the Amorrhites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, and their land and the cities thereof round about.
33
33
So Moses gave the dominions of Sehon, that had been king of the Amorrhites, and Og, the king of Basan, with all the cities that were contained in the whole region, to Gad and to Ruben and to half the tribe of Manasses, that were descended from Joseph’s son.
34
And the sons of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
34
Igitur exstruxerunt filii Gad, Dibon, et Ataroth, et Aroër,
34
And the men of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35
And Etroth, and Sophan, and Jazer, and Jegbaa,
35
et Etroth, et Sophan, et Jazer, et Jegbaa,
35
Etroth, Sophan, Jazer, Jegbaa,
36
And Bethnemra, and Betharan, fenced cities, and folds for their cattle.
36
et Bethnemra, et Betharan, urbes munitas, et caulas pecoribus suis.
36
Bethnemra and Betharan, all fortified cities, and folds, too, for their sheep.
37
But the children of Ruben built Hesebon, and Eleale, and Cariathaim,
37
Filii vero Ruben ædificaverunt Hesebon, et Eleale, et Cariathaim,
37
The men of Ruben rebuilt Hesebon, Eleale, Cariathaim,
38
And Nabo, and Baalmeon (their names being changed) and Sabama: giving names to the cities which they had built.
38
et Nabo, et Baalmeon versis nominibus, Sabama quoque: imponentes vocabula urbibus, quas exstruxerunt.
38
Nabo and Baalmeon, under other names, and Sabama too; they gave names of their own to these cities when they rebuilt them.
39
Moreover the children of Machir, the son of Manasses, went into Galaad, and wasted it, cutting off the Amorrhites, the inhabitants thereof.
39
Porro filii Machir filii Manasse, perrexerunt in Galaad, et vastaverunt eam interfecto Amorrhæo habitatore ejus.
39
Meanwhile the descendants of Machir, that was Manasses’ son, had made their way into Galaad and plundered it, slaughtering the Amorrhites who dwelt there;
40
And Moses gave the land of Galaad to Machir the son of Manasses, and he dwelt in it.
40
Dedit ergo Moyses terram Galaad Machir filio Manasse, qui habitavit in ea.
40
so Moses gave Galaad to the clan of Manasses’ son Machir, and there they took up their abode.
41
And Jair the son of Manasses went, and took the villages thereof, and he called them Havoth Jair, that is to say, the villages of Jair.
41
41
Other Amorrhite towns were taken by Jair, a tribesman of Manasses, who called them Havoth-Jair, that is, Jair’s villages;
42
Nobe also went, and took Canath with the villages thereof: and he called it by his own name, Nobe.
42
42
and Nobe, who invaded and captured Chanath with its daughter-towns, called this after his own name, Nobe.
