1
Unto the end, for Idithun, a psalm of David.
1
In finem, pro Idithun. Psalmus David.
1
(To the choir-master. Melody: Idithun. A psalm. Of David.)
2
Shall not my soul be subject to God? for from him is my salvation.
2
Nonne Deo subjecta erit anima mea? ab ipso enim salutare meum.
2
No rest has my soul but in God’s hands; to him I look for deliverance.
3
For he is my God and my saviour: he is my protector, I shall be moved no more.
3
Nam et ipse Deus meus et salutaris meus; susceptor meus, non movebor amplius.
3
I have no other stronghold, no other deliverer but him; safe in his protection, I fear no deadly fall.
4
How long do you rush in upon a man? you all kill, as if you were thrusting down a leaning wall, and a tottering fence.
4
Quousque irruitis in hominem? interficitis universi vos, tamquam parieti inclinato et maceriæ depulsæ.
4
Still one man my enemies single out for their onslaught, not gaping hedge or ruinous wall more ripe for overthrow;
5
But they have thought to cast away my price; I ran in thirst: they blessed with their mouth, but cursed with their heart.
5
Verumtamen pretium meum cogitaverunt repellere; cucurri in siti: ore suo benedicebant, et corde suo maledicebant.
5
from my safe fastness they would fain dislodge me, ready liars that speak me fair, but ever with a curse in their hearts.
6
But be thou, O my soul, subject to God: for from him is my patience.
6
Verumtamen Deo subjecta esto, anima mea, quoniam ab ipso patientia mea:
6
Yet even now, my soul, leave thyself in God’s hands; all my trust is in him.
7
For he is my God and my saviour: he is my helper, I shall not be moved.
7
quia ipse Deus meus et salvator meus, adjutor meus, non emigrabo.
7
He is my stronghold and my deliverer, my protector, that makes me stand unmoved.
8
In God is my salvation and my glory: he is the God of my help, and my hope is in God.
8
In Deo salutare meum et gloria mea; Deus auxilii mei, et spes mea in Deo est.
8
God is all my defence and all my boast; my rock-fastness, my refuge is in God.
9
Trust in him, all ye congregation of people: pour out your hearts before him. God is our helper for ever.
9
Sperate in eo, omnis congregatio populi; effundite coram illo corda vestra: Deus adjutor noster in æternum.
9
Israelites, put ever your trust in him, and lay the homage of your hearts at his feet; God is our defence.
10
But vain are the sons of men, the sons of men are liars in the balances: that by vanity they may together deceive.
10
Verumtamen vani filii hominum, mendaces filii hominum in stateris, ut decipiant ipsi de vanitate in idipsum.
10
Man is a breath that passes; in Adam’s sons there is no trust; high in the scales they rise, weighed all together and lighter than a breath.
11
Trust not in iniquity, and cover not robberies: if riches abound, set not your heart upon them.
11
Nolite sperare in iniquitate, et rapinas nolite concupiscere; divitiæ si affluant, nolite cor apponere.
11
Put your faith in extortion no more, boast no more of plunder; set never your heed on mounting store of riches.
12
God hath spoken once, these two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God,
12
Semel locutus est Deus; duo hæc audivi: quia potestas Dei est,
12
Not once, but twice I have heard God’s voice of warning; all power is God’s.
13
and mercy to thee, O Lord; for thou wilt render to every man according to his works.
13
et tibi, Domine, misericordia: quia tu reddes unicuique juxta opera sua.
13
To thee, Lord, mercy belongs; thou wilt repay every man the reward of his deeds.
