Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: Vade, ascende de loco isto tu, et populus tuus quem eduxisti de terra Ægypti, in terram quam juravi Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, dicens: Semini tuo dabo eam:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Go, get thee up from this place, thou and thy people which thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, into the land concerning which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: To thy seed I will give it.

And now a new message came to Moses from the Lord, March on, then, with the people thou hast led out of Egypt; make thy way hence to the land I promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob should be the home of their race.

et mittam præcursorem tui angelum, ut ejiciam Chananæum, et Amorrhæum, et Hethæum, et Pherezæum, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum,

And I will send an angel before thee, that I may cast out the Chanaanite, and the Amorrhite, and the Hethite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite.

I am ready to send an angel who will go before thee, so as to cast out Chanaanite, Amorrhite, Hethite, Pherezite, Hevite and Jebusite,

et intres in terram fluentem lacte et melle. Non enim ascendam tecum, quia populus duræ cervicis es: ne forte disperdam te in via.

That thou mayst enter into the land that floweth with milk and honey. For I will not go up with thee, because thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I destroy thee in the way.

and bring thee into the land that is all milk and honey. But I will not go with thee myself, stiff-necked people as thou art, or I might be moved to destroy thee on the way.

Audiensque populus sermonem hunc pessimum, luxit: et nullus ex more indutus est cultu suo.

And the people hearing these very bad tidings, mourned: and no man put on his ornaments according to custom.

The people, on hearing this bitter reproach, went mourning, and none wore his ornaments, as custom bade;

Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Loquere filiis Israël: Populus duræ cervicis es: semel ascendam in medio tui, et delebo te. Jam nunc depone ornatum tuum, ut sciam quid faciam tibi.

And the Lord said to Moses: Say to the children of Israel: Thou art a stiffnecked people; once I shall come up in the midst of thee, and shall destroy thee. Now presently lay aside thy ornaments, that I may know what to do to thee.

the Lord’s word came through Moses to the Israelites, You are a stiff-necked people, and if once I set out on the march among you, I would be moved to destroy you. Take off, here and now, your ornaments, and wait till I have resolved what to do with you.

Deposuerunt ergo filii Israël ornatum suum a monte Horeb.

So the children of Israel laid aside their ornaments by Mount Horeb.

So there, at mount Horeb, the sons of Israel laid their ornaments aside.

Moyses quoque tollens tabernaculum, tetendit extra castra procul, vocavitque nomen ejus, Tabernaculum fœderis. Et omnis populus, qui habebat aliquam quæstionem, egrediebatur ad tabernaculum fœderis, extra castra.

Moses also taking the tabernacle, pitched it without the camp afar off, and called the name thereof, The tabernacle of the covenant. And all the people that had any question, went forth to the tabernacle of the covenant, without the camp.

Moses, too, removed his tent, and pitched it far off, away from the camp, calling it, The tent which bears witness to the covenant; to this, all who had disputes to settle must betake themselves, away from the camp.

Cumque egrederetur Moyses ad tabernaculum, surgebat universa plebs, et stabat unusquisque in ostio papilionis sui, aspiciebantque tergum Moysi, donec ingrederetur tentorium.

And when Moses went forth to the tabernacle, all the people rose up, and every one stood in the door of his pavilion, and they beheld the back of Moses, till he went into the tabernacle.

And when Moses repaired to this tent of his, all the people rose up and stood at the doors of their own tents, following Moses with their eyes till he went in.

Ingresso autem illo tabernaculum fœderis, descendebat columna nubis, et stabat ad ostium, loquebaturque cum Moyse,

And when he was gone into the tabernacle of the covenant, the pillar of the cloud came down, and stood at the door, and he spoke with Moses.

And, once he was within the tent that bore witness of the covenant, the pillar of cloud would come down and stand at the entrance of it, and there the Lord spoke with Moses,

cernentibus universis quod columna nubis staret ad ostium tabernaculi. Stabantque ipsi, et adorabant per fores tabernaculorum suorum.

And all saw that the pillar of the cloud stood at the door of the tabernacle. And they stood, and worshipped at the doors of their tents.

while all watched the pillar of cloud standing there, and rose up and worshipped, each at his own tent door.

Loquebatur autem Dominus ad Moysen facie ad faciem, sicut solet loqui homo ad amicum suum. Cumque ille reverteretur in castra, minister ejus Josue filius Nun, puer, non recedebat de tabernaculo.

And the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man is wont to speak to his friend. And when he returned into the camp, his servant Josue the son of Nun, a young man, departed not from the tabernacle.

Thus the Lord spoke with Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And when he returned to the camp, Josue, son of Nun, the young man who served him, never left the tent unguarded.

Dixit autem Moyses ad Dominum: Præcipis ut educam populum istum: et non indicas mihi quem missurus es mecum, præsertim cum dixeris: Novi te ex nomine, et invenisti gratiam coram me.

And Moses said to the Lord: Thou commandest me to lead forth this people: and thou dost not let me know whom thou wilt send with me, especially whereas thou hast said: I know thee by name, and thou hast found favour in my sight.

Then Moses complained to the Lord, Thou biddest me lead this people on the march, but thou wilt not tell me who it is thou art sending me for my guide. And this is the man whom thou callest thy familiar friend, assuring him of thy favour!

Si ergo inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, ostende mihi faciem tuam, ut sciam te, et inveniam gratiam ante oculos tuos: respice populum tuum gentem hanc.

If therefore I have found favour in thy sight, shew me thy face, that I may know thee, and may find grace before thy eyes: look upon thy people this nation.

Nay, if indeed thou dost look upon me with favour, make thy own presence known to me; let me know thee, and know that thy favour is with me. Have more regard for this folk, thy own people.

Dixitque Dominus: Facies mea præcedet te, et requiem dabo tibi.

And the Lord said: My face shall go before thee, and I will give thee rest.

My presence, the Lord said, shall go before thee, and bring thee to thy resting-place.
15
Et ait Moyses: Si non tu ipse præcedas, ne educas nos de loco isto.
15
And Moses said: If thou thyself dost not go before, bring us not out of this place.
15
It must be thyself, said Moses, going before us; otherwise do not bid us leave the place where we are.
16
In quo enim scire poterimus ego et populus tuus invenisse nos gratiam in conspectu tuo, nisi ambulaveris nobiscum, ut glorificemur ab omnibus populis qui habitant super terram?
16
For how shall we be able to know, I and thy people, that we have found grace in thy sight, unless thou walk with us, that we may be glorified by all people that dwell upon the earth?
16
How am I and thy people to know that thou dost look upon us with favour, if thou wilt not journey with us; such a privilege as no other people in the world can boast?
17
Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: Et verbum istud, quod locutus es, faciam: invenisti enim gratiam coram me, et teipsum novi ex nomine.
17
And the Lord said to Moses: This word also, which thou hast spoken, will I do: for thou hast found grace before me, and thee I have known by name.

And the Lord told Moses, I will grant this request of thine; such favour thou hast with me, thou, my familiar friend.

Qui ait: Ostende mihi gloriam tuam.

And he said: Shew me thy glory.
18
Give me, then, said Moses, the sight of thy glory.
19
Respondit: Ego ostendam omne bonum tibi, et vocabo in nomine Domini coram te: et miserebor cui voluero, et clemens ero in quem mihi placuerit.

He answered: I will shew thee all good, and I will proclaim in the name of the Lord before thee: and I will have mercy on whom I will, and I will be merciful to whom it shall please me.

And he answered, All my splendour shall pass before thy eyes, and I will pronounce, in thy presence, my own divine name, the name of the Lord who shews favour where he will, grants pardon where he will.
20
Rursumque ait: Non poteris videre faciem meam: non enim videbit me homo et vivet.
20
And again he said: Thou canst not see my face: for man shall not see me and live.
20
But, my face, he said, thou canst not see; mortal man cannot see me, and live to tell of it.
21
Et iterum: Ecce, inquit, est locus apud me, et stabis supra petram.
21
And again he said: Behold there is a place with me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock.
21
Then he said, There is a place here, close by me, where thou mayst stand on a rock;
22
Cumque transibit gloria mea, ponam te in foramine petræ, et protegam dextera mea, donec transeam:
22
And when my glory shall pass, I will set thee in a hole of the rock, and protect thee with my right hand, till I pass:
22
there I will station thee in a cleft of the rock, while my glory passes by, and cover thee with my right hand until I have gone past.
23
tollamque manum meam, et videbis posteriora mea: faciem autem meam videre non poteris.
23
And I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face thou canst not see.
23
So, when I take my hand away, thou shalt follow me with thy eyes, but my face thou canst not see.
