Et cœpit illis in parabolis loqui: Vineam pastinavit homo, et circumdedit sepem, et fodit lacum, et ædificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.

And he began to speak to them in parables: A certain man planted a vineyard and made a hedge about it, and dug a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it to husbandmen; and went into a far country.

Then he began to speak to them in parables; There was a man who planted a vineyard, and put a wall round it, and dug a wine-press and built a tower in it, and then let it out to some vine-dressers, while he went on his travels.

Et misit ad agricolas in tempore servum ut ab agricolis acciperet de fructu vineæ.

And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant to receive of the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

And when the season came, he sent one of his servants on an errand to the vine-dressers, to claim from the vine-dressers the revenue of his vineyard.

Coloni autem dixerunt ad invicem: Hic est hæres: venite, occidamus eum: et nostra erit hæreditas.

But the husbandmen said one to another: This is the heir; come let us kill him; and the inheritance shall be ours.

Et apprehendentes eum, occiderunt: et ejecerunt extra vineam.

And laying hold on him, they killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

Quid ergo faciet dominus vineæ? Veniet, et perdet colonos, et dabit vineam aliis.

What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those husbandmen; and will give the vineyard to others.

And now, what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, and make an end of those vine-dressers, and give his vineyard to others.

Nec scripturam hanc legistis: Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli:

And have you not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner:

Why, have you not read this passage in the scriptures, The very stone which the builders rejected has become the chief stone at the corner;

a Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris?

By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Et quærebant eum tenere: et timuerunt turbam: cognoverunt enim quoniam ad eos parabolam hanc dixerit. Et relicto eo abierunt.

And they sought to lay hands on him, but they feared the people. For they knew that he spoke this parable to them. And leaving him, they went their way.

This parable, they saw, was aimed at themselves, and they would gladly have laid hands on him, but they were afraid of the multitude; so they went away and left him alone.

Et mittunt ad eum quosdam ex pharisæis, et herodianis, ut eum caperent in verbo.

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians; that they should catch him in his words.

Then they sent some of the Pharisees to him, with those who were of Herod’s party, to make him betray himself in his talk.

Qui venientes dicunt ei: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et non curas quemquam: nec enim vides in faciem hominum, sed in veritate viam Dei doces. Licet dari tributum Cæsari, an non dabimus?

Who coming, say to him: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and carest not for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar; or shall we not give it?

These came and said to him, Master, we know that thou art sincere; that thou holdest no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man, but teachest in all sincerity the way of God. Is it right that tribute should be paid to Caesar? Or should we refuse to pay it?

Qui sciens versutiam illorum, ait illos: Quid me tentatis? afferte mihi denarium ut videam.

Who knowing their wiliness, saith to them: Why tempt you me? bring me a penny that I may see it.

But he saw their treachery, and said to them, Why do you thus put me to the test? Bring me a silver piece, and let me look at it.

At illi attulerunt ei. Et ait illis: Cujus est imago hæc, et inscriptio? Dicunt ei: Cæsaris.

And they brought it him. And he saith to them: Whose is this image and inscription? They say to him, Cæsar’s.

When they brought it, he asked them, Whose is this likeness? Whose name is inscribed on it? Caesar’s, they said.

Respondens autem Jesus dixit illis: Reddite igitur quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari: et quæ sunt Dei, Deo. Et mirabantur super eo.

And Jesus answering, said to them: Render therefore to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him.

Whereupon Jesus answered them, Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. And they were lost in admiration of him.

Et venerunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt resurrectionem non esse: et interrogabant eum, dicentes:

And there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying:

Then he was approached with a question by the Sadducees, men who say that there is no resurrection:

Magister, Moyses nobis scripsit, ut si cujus frater mortuus fuerit, et dimiserit uxorem, et filios non reliquerit, accipiat frater ejus uxorem ipsius, et resuscitet semen fratri suo.

Master, Moses wrote unto us, that if any man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.

Master, they said, Moses prescribed for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a widow behind him but no children, he, the brother, should marry the widow, and beget children in the dead brother’s name.

Septem ergo fratres erant: et primus accepit uxorem, et mortuus est non relicto semine.

Now there were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no issue.

In resurrectione ergo cum resurrexerint, cujus de his erit uxor? septem enim habuerunt eam uxorem.

In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise again, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

And now, when the dead rise again, which of these will be her husband, since she was wife to all seven?

Et respondens Jesus, ait illis: Nonne ideo erratis, non scientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei?

And Jesus answering, saith to them: Do ye not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?

Jesus answered them, Is not this where you are wrong, that you do not understand the scriptures, or what is the power of God?

Cum enim a mortuis resurrexerint, neque nubent, neque nubentur, sed sunt sicut angeli in cælis.

For when they shall rise again from the dead, they shall neither marry, nor be married, but are as the angels in heaven.

When the dead rise, there is no marrying or giving in marriage, they are as the angels in heaven are.

De mortuis autem quod resurgant, non legistis in libro Moysi, super rubum, quomodo dixerit illi Deus, inquiens: Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob?

And as concerning the dead that they rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him, saying: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

But as for the dead rising again, have you never read in the book of Moses how God spoke to him at the burning bush, and said, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

Non est Deus mortuorum, sed vivorum. Vos ergo multum erratis.

He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You therefore do greatly err.

Yet it is of living men, not of dead men, that he is the God; you are wrong, then, altogether.

Et accessit unus de scribis, qui audierat illos conquirentes, et videns quoniam bene illis responderit, interrogavit eum quod esset primum omnium mandatum.

And there came one of the scribes that had heard them reasoning together, and seeing that he had answered them well, asked him which was the first commandment of all.

One of the scribes heard their dispute, and, finding that he answered to the purpose, came up and asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

Jesus autem respondit ei: Quia primum omnium mandatum est: Audi Israël, Dominus Deus tuus, Deus unus est:

And Jesus answered him: The first commandment of all is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord thy God is one God.

Jesus answered him, The first commandment of all is, Listen, Israel; there is no God but the Lord thy God;

et diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, et ex tota mente tua, et ex tota virtute tua. Hoc est primum mandatum.

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength. This is the first commandment.

And the scribe said to him, Truly, Master, thou hast answered well; there is but one God, and no other beside him;

Et ut diligatur ex toto corde, et ex toto intellectu, et ex tota anima, et ex tota fortitudine, et diligere proximum tamquam seipsum, majus est omnibus holocautomatibus, et sacrificiis.

And that he should be loved with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, and with the whole soul, and with the whole strength; and to love one’s neighbour as one’s self, is a greater thing than all holocausts and sacrifices.

and if a man loves God with all his heart and all his soul and all his understanding and all his strength, and his neighbour as himself, that is a greater thing than all burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

Jesus autem videns quod sapienter respondisset, dixit illi: Non es longe a regno Dei. Et nemo jam audebat eum interrogare.

And Jesus seeing that he had answered wisely, said to him: Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Then Jesus, seeing how wisely he had answered, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And after this, no one dared to try him with further questions.

Et respondens Jesus dicebat, docens in templo: Quomodo dicunt scribæ Christum filium esse David?

And Jesus answering, said, teaching in the temple: How do the scribes say, that Christ is the son of David?

Then Jesus said openly, still teaching in the temple, What do the scribes mean by saying that Christ is to be the son of David?

Ipse enim David dicit in Spiritu Sancto: Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.

For David himself saith by the Holy Ghost: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool.

David himself was moved by the Holy Spirit to say, The Lord said to my Master, Sit on my right hand while I make thy enemies a footstool under thy feet.

Ipse ergo David dicit eum Dominum, et unde est filius ejus? Et multa turba eum libenter audivit.

David therefore himself calleth him Lord, and whence is he then his son? And a great multitude heard him gladly.

Et dicebat eis in doctrina sua: Cavete a scribis, qui volunt in stolis ambulare, et salutari in foro,

And he said to them in his doctrine: Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and to be saluted in the marketplace,

This was part of the teaching he gave them, Beware of the scribes, who enjoy walking in long robes, and having their hands kissed in the market-place,

et in primis cathedris sedere in synagogis, et primos discubitus in cœnis:

And to sit in the first chairs, in the synagogues, and to have the highest places at suppers:

and the first seats in the synagogues, and the chief places at feasts;

qui devorant domos viduarum sub obtentu prolixæ orationis: hi accipient prolixius judicium.

Who devour the houses of widows under the pretence of long prayer: these shall receive greater judgment.

who swallow up the property of widows, under cover of their long prayers; their sentence will be all the heavier for that.

Et sedens Jesus contra gazophylacium, aspiciebat quomodo turba jactaret æs in gazophylacium, et multi divites jactabant multa.

And Jesus sitting over against the treasury, beheld how the people cast money into the treasury, and many that were rich cast in much.

As he was sitting opposite the treasury of the temple, Jesus watched the multitude throwing coins into the treasury, the many rich with their many offerings;
42
Cum venisset autem vidua una pauper, misit duo minuta, quod est quadrans,

And there came a certain poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.

and there was one poor widow, who came and put in two mites, which make a farthing.

et convocans discipulos suos, ait illis: Amen dico vobis, quoniam vidua hæc pauper plus omnibus misit, qui miserunt in gazophylacium.

And calling his disciples together, he saith to them: Amen I say to you, this poor widow hath cast in more than all they who have cast into the treasury.

Thereupon he called his disciples to him, and said to them, Believe me, this poor widow has put in more than all those others who have put offerings into the treasury.

Omnes enim ex eo, quod abundabat illis, miserunt: hæc vero de penuria sua omnia quæ habuit misit totum victum suum.

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want cast in all she had, even her whole living.

The others all gave out of what they had to spare; she, with so little to give, put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.
