De spiritualibus autem, nolo vos ignorare fratres.
1
Now concerning spiritual things, my brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1
And now about spiritual gifts; I would not willingly leave you in doubt about these.

Scitis quoniam cum gentes essetis, ad simulacra muta prout ducebamini euntes.
2
You know that when you were heathens, you went to dumb idols, according as you were led.
2
While you were still heathen, as you can remember well enough, you let yourselves be led away wherever men would lead you, to worship false gods that gave no utterance.

Ideo notum vobis facio, quod nemo in Spiritu Dei loquens, dicit anathema Jesu. Et nemo potest dicere, Dominus Jesus, nisi in Spiritu Sancto.

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man, speaking by the Spirit of God, saith Anathema to Jesus. And no man can say the Lord Jesus, but by the Holy Ghost.

That is why I am telling you of this. Just as no one can be speaking through God’s Spirit if he calls Jesus accursed, so it is only through the Holy Spirit that anyone can say, Jesus is the Lord;

Divisiones vero gratiarum sunt, idem autem Spiritus:
4
Now there are diversities of graces, but the same Spirit;
4
and yet there are different kinds of gifts, though it is the same Spirit who gives them,
5
et divisiones ministrationum sunt, idem autem Dominus:
5
And there are diversities of ministries, but the same Lord;
5
just as there are different kinds of service, though it is the same Lord we serve,
6
et divisiones operationum sunt, idem vero Deus qui operatur omnia in omnibus.

And there are diversities of operations, but the same God, who worketh all in all.

and different manifestations of power, though it is the same God who manifests his power everywhere in all of us.

Unicuique autem datur manifestatio Spiritus ad utilitatem.
7
And the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man unto profit.
7
The revelation of the Spirit is imparted to each, to make the best advantage of it.

Alii quidem per Spiritum datur sermo sapientiæ: alii autem sermo scientiæ secundum eumdem Spiritum:

To one indeed, by the Spirit, is given the word of wisdom: and to another, the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
8
One learns to speak with wisdom, by the power of the Spirit, another to speak with knowledge, with the same Spirit for his rule;
9
alteri fides in eodem Spiritu: alii gratia sanitatum in uno Spiritu:

To another, faith in the same spirit; to another, the grace of healing in one Spirit:

one, through the same Spirit, is given faith; another, through the same Spirit, powers of healing;
10
alii operatio virtutum, alii prophetia, alii discretio spirituum, alii genera linguarum, alii interpretatio sermonum.

To another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discerning of spirits; to another, diverse kinds of tongues; to another, interpretation of speeches.

one can perform miracles, one can prophesy, another can test the spirit of the prophets; one can speak in different tongues, another can interpret the tongues;
11
Hæc autem omnia operatur unus atque idem Spiritus, dividens singulis prout vult.

But all these things one and the same Spirit worketh, dividing to every one according as he will.

but all this is the work of one and the same Spirit, who distributes his gifts as he will to each severally.
12
Sicut enim corpus unum est, et membra habet multa, omnia autem membra corporis cum sint multa, unum tamen corpus sunt: ita et Christus.

For as the body is one, and hath many members; and all the members of the body, whereas they are many, yet are one body, so also is Christ.

A man’s body is all one, though it has a number of different organs; and all this multitude of organs goes to make up one body; so it is with Christ.
13
Etenim in uno Spiritu omnes nos in unum corpus baptizati sumus, sive Judæi, sive gentiles, sive servi, sive liberi: et omnes in uno Spiritu potati sumus.

For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free; and in one Spirit we have all been made to drink.

We too, all of us, have been baptized into a single body by the power of a single Spirit, Jews and Greeks, slaves and free men alike; we have all been given drink at a single source, the one Spirit.

Nam et corpus non est unum membrum, sed multa.
14
For the body also is not one member, but many.
14
The body, after all, consists not of one organ but of many;
15
Si dixerit pes: Quoniam non sum manus, non sum de corpore: num ideo non est de corpore?

If the foot should say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

if the foot should say, I am not the hand, and therefore I do not belong to the body, does it belong to the body any the less for that?

Et si dixerit auris: Quoniam non sum oculus, non sum de corpore: num ideo est de corpore?

And if the ear should say, because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

If the ear should say, I am not the eye, and therefore I do not belong to the body, does it belong to the body any the less for that?

Si totum corpus oculus: ubi auditus? Si totum auditus: ubi odoratus?
17
If the whole body were the eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?

Where would the power of hearing be, if the body were all eye? Or the power of smell, if the body were all ear?

Nunc autem posuit Deus membra, unumquodque eorum in corpore sicut voluit.
18
But now God hath set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him.
18
As it is, God has given each one of them its own position in the body, as he would.
19
Quod si essent omnia unum membrum, ubi corpus?
19
And if they all were one member, where would be the body?
19
If the whole were one single organ, what would become of the body?
20
Nunc autem multa quidem membra, unum autem corpus.
20
But now there are many members indeed, yet one body.
20
Instead of that, we have a multitude of organs, and one body.
21
Non potest autem oculus dicere manui: Opera tua non indigeo: aut iterum caput pedibus: Non estis mihi necessarii.

And the eye cannot say to the hand: I need not thy help; nor again the head to the feet: I have no need of you.

The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee, or the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

Sed multo magis quæ videntur membra corporis infirmiora esse, necessariora sunt:
22
Yea, much more those that seem to be the more feeble members of the body, are more necessary
22
On the contrary, it is those parts of our body which seem most contemptible that are necessary to it;
23
et quæ putamus ignobiliora membra esse corporis, his honorem abundantiorem circumdamus: et quæ inhonesta sunt nostra, abundantiorem honestatem habent.
23
And such as we think to be the less honourable members of the body, about these we put more abundant honour; and those that are our uncomely parts, have more abundant comeliness.

what seems base in our bodies, we surround with special honour, treating with special seemliness that which is unseemly in us,
24
Honesta autem nostra nullius egent: sed Deus temperavit corpus, ei cui deerat, abundantiorem tribuendo honorem,
24
But our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, giving to that which wanted the more abundant honour.
24
whereas that which is seemly in us has no need of it. Thus God has established a harmony in the body, giving special honour to that which needed it most.
25
ut non sit schisma in corpore, sed idipsum pro invicem sollicita sint membra.
25
That there might be no schism in the body; but the members might be mutually careful one for another.
25
There was to be no want of unity in the body; all the different parts of it were to make each other’s welfare their common care.
26
Et si quid patitur unum membrum, compatiuntur omnia membra: sive gloriatur unum membrum, congaudent omnia membra.
26
And if one member suffer any thing, all the members suffer with it; or if one member glory, all the members rejoice with it.

If one part is suffering, all the rest suffer with it; if one part is treated with honour, all the rest find pleasure in it.
27
Vos autem estis corpus Christi, et membra de membro.
27
Now you are the body of Christ, and members of member.
27
And you are Christ’s body, organs of it depending upon each other.
28
Et quosdam quidem posuit Deus in ecclesia primum apostolos, secundo prophetas, exinde doctores, deinde virtutes, exinde gratias curationum, opitulationes, gubernationes, genera linguarum, interpretationes sermonum.

And God indeed hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors; after that miracles; then the graces of healings, helps, governments, kinds of tongues, interpretations of speeches.

God has given us different positions in the church; apostles first, then prophets, and thirdly teachers; then come miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, works of mercy, the management of affairs, speaking with different tongues, and interpreting prophecy.

Numquid omnes apostoli? numquid omnes prophetæ? numquid omnes doctores?

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all doctors?
29
Are all of us apostles, all prophets, all teachers?

numquid omnes virtutes? numquid omnes gratiam habent curationum? numquid omnes linguis loquuntur? numquid omnes interpretantur?

Are all workers of miracles? Have all the grace of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
30
Have all miraculous powers, or gifts of healing? Can all speak with tongues, can all interpret?

Æmulamini autem charismata meliora. Et adhuc excellentiorem viam vobis demonstro.

But be zealous for the better gifts. And I shew unto you yet a more excellent way.

Prize the best gifts of heaven. Meanwhile, I can shew you a way which is better than any other.
