Carissimi, nolite omni spiritui credere, sed probate spiritus si ex Deo sint: quoniam multi pseudoprophetæ exierunt in mundum.

Not all prophetic spirits, brethren, deserve your credence; you must put them to the test, to see whether they come from God. Many false prophets have made their appearance in the world.

Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

In hoc cognoscitur Spiritus Dei: omnis spiritus qui confitetur Jesum Christum in carne venisse, ex Deo est:

This is the test by which God’s Spirit is to be recognized; every spirit which acknowledges Jesus Christ as having come to us in human flesh has God for its author;

By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God:

et omnis spiritus qui solvit Jesum, ex Deo non est, et hic est antichristus, de quo audistis quoniam venit, et nunc jam in mundo est.

and no spirit which would disunite Jesus comes from God. This is the power of Antichrist, whose coming you have been told to expect; now you must know that he is here in the world already.

And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God: and this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, and he is now already in the world.

Vos ex Deo estis filioli, et vicistis eum, quoniam major est qui in vobis est, quam qui in mundo.

You, little children, who take your origin from God, have gained the mastery over it; there is a stronger power at work in you, than in the world.

You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Ipsi de mundo sunt: ideo de mundo loquuntur, et mundus eos audit.

Those others, belonging to the world, speak the world’s language, and the world listens to them;

They are of the world: therefore of the world they speak, and the world heareth them.

Nos ex Deo sumus. Qui novit Deum, audit nos; qui non est ex Deo, non audit nos: in hoc cognoscimus Spiritum veritatis, et spiritum erroris.

we belong to God, and a man must have knowledge of God if he is to listen to us; if he does not belong to God, he does not listen to us at all. That is the test by which we distinguish the true Spirit from the false spirit.

We are of God. He that knoweth God, heareth us. He that is not of God, heareth us not. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Carissimi, diligamus nos invicem: quia caritas ex Deo est. Et omnis qui diligit, ex Deo natus est, et cognoscit Deum.

Beloved, let us love one another; love springs from God; no one can love without being born of God, and knowing God.

Dearly beloved, let us love one another, for charity is of God. And every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God.

Qui non diligit, non novit Deum: quoniam Deus caritas est.

How can the man who has no love have any knowledge of God, since God is love?

He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is charity.

In hoc apparuit caritas Dei in nobis, quoniam Filium suum unigenitum misit Deus in mundum, ut vivamus per eum.

What has revealed the love of God, where we are concerned, is that he has sent his only-begotten Son into the world, so that we might have life through him.

By this hath the charity of God appeared towards us, because God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live by him.

In hoc est caritas: non quasi nos dilexerimus Deum, sed quoniam ipse prior dilexit nos, et misit Filium suum propitiationem pro peccatis nostris.

That love resides, not in our shewing any love for God, but in his shewing love for us first, when he sent out his Son to be an atonement for our sins.

In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he hath first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins.

Carissimi, si sic Deus dilexit nos: et nos debemus alterutrum diligere.

Beloved, if God has shewn such love to us, we too must love one another.

My dearest, if God hath so loved us; we also ought to love one another.

Deum nemo vidit umquam. Si diligamus invicem, Deus in nobis manet, et caritas ejus in nobis perfecta est.

No man has ever seen God; but if we love one another, then we have God dwelling in us, and the love of God has reached its full growth in our lives.

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abideth in us, and his charity is perfected in us.

In hoc cognoscimus quoniam in eo manemus, et ipse in nobis: quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis.

This is our proof that we are dwelling in him, and he in us; he has given us a share of his own Spirit.

In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he hath given us of his spirit.

Et nos vidimus, et testificamur quoniam Pater misit Filium suum Salvatorem mundi.

We apostles have seen for ourselves, and can testify, that the Father sent out his Son to be the redeemer of the world,

And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world.

Quisquis confessus fuerit quoniam Jesus est Filius Dei, Deus in eo manet, et ipse in Deo.

and where a man acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him, and he in God;

Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God.
16
Et nos cognovimus, et credidimus caritati, quam habet Deus in nobis. Deus caritas est: et qui manet in caritate, in Deo manet, et Deus in eo.

we have learned to recognize the love God has in our regard, to recognize it, and to make it our belief. God is love; he who dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.

And we have known, and have believed the charity, which God hath to us. God is charity: and he that abideth in charity, abideth in God, and God in him.

In hoc perfecta est caritas Dei nobiscum, ut fiduciam habeamus in die judicii: quia sicut ille est, et nos sumus in hoc mundo.

That our life in the world should be like his, means that his love has had its way with us to the full, so that we can meet the day of judgement with confidence.

In this is the charity of God perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment: because as he is, we also are in this world.

Timor non est in caritate: sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem, quoniam timor pœnam habet: qui autem timet, non est perfectus in caritate.

Love has no room for fear; and indeed, love drives out fear when it is perfect love, since fear only serves for correction. The man who is still afraid has not yet reached the full measure of love.

Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casteth out fear, because fear hath pain. And he that feareth, is not perfected in charity.

Nos ergo diligamus Deum, quoniam Deus prior dilexit nos.

Yes, we must love God; he gave us his love first.

Let us therefore love God, because God first hath loved us.

Si quis dixerit: Quoniam diligo Deum, et fratrem suum oderit, mendax est. Qui enim non diligit fratrem suum quem vidit, Deum, quem non vidit, quomodo potest diligere?

If a man boasts of loving God, while he hates his own brother, he is a liar. He has seen his brother, and has no love for him; what love can he have for the God he has never seen?

If any man say, I love God, and hateth his brother; he is a liar. For he that loveth not his brother, whom he seeth, how can he love God, whom he seeth not?
21
Et hoc mandatum habemus a Deo: ut qui diligit Deum, diligat et fratrem suum.

No, this is the divine command that has been given us; the man who loves God must be one who loves his brother as well.

And this commandment we have from God, that he who loveth God, love also his brother.
