1 Obsecro igitur primum omnium fieri obsecrationes, orationes, postulationes, gratiarum actiones, pro omnibus hominibus: |
1 This, first of all, I ask; that petition, prayer, entreaty and thanksgiving should be offered for all mankind, |
1 I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men: |
2 especially for kings and others in high station, so that we can live a calm and tranquil life, as dutifully and decently as we may. |
2 For kings, and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity. |
3 Such prayer is our duty, it is what God, our Saviour, expects of us, |
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, |
4 since it is his will that all men should be saved, and be led to recognize the truth; |
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
5 there is only one God, and only one mediator between God and men, Jesus Christ, who is a man, like them, |
5 For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus: |
6 and gave himself as a ransom for them all. At the appointed time, he bore his witness, |
6 Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times. |
7 and of that witness I am the chosen herald, sent as an apostle (I make no false claims, I am only recalling the truth) to be a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. |
7 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle, (I say the truth, I lie not,) a doctor of the Gentiles in faith and truth. |
8 Volo ergo viros orare in omni loco, levantes puras manus sine ira et disceptatione. |
8 It is my wish that prayer should everywhere be offered by the men; they are to lift up hands that are sanctified, free from all anger and dispute. |
8 I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention. |
9 So, too, with the women; they are to dress themselves modestly and with restraint in befitting attire; no plaited hair, no gold ornaments, or pearls, or rich clothes; |
9 In like manner women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire, |
10 a virtuous life is the best adornment for women who lay claim to piety. |
10 But as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works. |
11 Mulier in silentio discat cum omni subjectione. |
11 Women are to keep silence, and take their place, with all submissiveness, as learners; |
11 Let the woman learn in silence, with all subjection. |
12 a woman shall have no leave from me to teach, and issue commands to her husband; her part is to be silent. |
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man: but to be in silence. |
13 Adam enim primus formatus est: deinde Heva: |
13 It was Adam that was created first, and Eve later, |
13 For Adam was first formed; then Eve. |
14 nor was it Adam that went astray; woman was led astray, and was involved in transgression. |
14 And Adam was not seduced; but the woman being seduced, was in the transgression. |
15 Yet woman will find her salvation in child-bearing, if she will but remain true to faith and love and holy living. |
15 Yet she shall be saved through childbearing; if she continue in faith, and love and sanctification, with sobriety. |
