1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life, which is in Christ Jesus. |

1 Paul, sent as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, in furtherance of that promise of life which is given us in Christ Jesus, |
2 To Timothy my dearly beloved son, grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord. |
2 Timotheo carissimo filio: gratia, misericordia, pax a Deo Patre, et Christo Jesu Domino nostro. |
2 to Timothy, his well beloved son; Grace and mercy and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord. |
3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve from my forefathers with a pure conscience, that without ceasing, I have a remembrance of thee in my prayers, night and day. |
3 Gratias ago Deo, cui servio a progenitoribus in conscientia pura, quod sine intermissione habeam tui memoriam in orationibus meis, nocte ac die |
3 It is with gratitude to that God, whom I worship with a clear conscience in the way my fathers taught me, that I make mention of thee continually, day and night, in my prayer. |
4 Desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy, |
4 desiderans te videre, memor lacrimarum tuarum, ut gaudio implear, |
4 I keep the memory of thy tears, and long to see thee again, so as to have my fill of joy |
5 Calling to mind that faith which is in thee unfeigned, which also dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, and I am certain that in thee also. |
5 recordationem accipiens ejus fidei, quæ est in te non ficta, quæ et habitavit primum in avia tua Loide, et matre tua Eunice, certus sum autem quod et in te. |
5 when I receive fresh proof of thy sincere faith. That faith dwelt in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, before thee; I am fully persuaded that it dwells in thee too. |
6 For which cause I admonish thee, that thou stir up the grace of God which is in thee, by the imposition of my hands. |
6 Propter quam causam admoneo te ut resuscites gratiam Dei, quæ est in te per impositionem manuum mearum. |
6 That is why I would remind thee to fan the flame of that special grace which God kindled in thee, when my hands were laid upon thee. |
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear: but of power, and of love, and of sobriety. |
7 Non enim dedit nobis Deus spiritum timoris: sed virtutis, et dilectionis, et sobrietatis. |
7 The spirit he has bestowed on us is not one that shrinks from danger; it is a spirit of action, of love, and of discipline. |
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but labour with the gospel, according to the power of God, |
8 Noli itaque erubescere testimonium Domini nostri, neque me vinctum ejus: sed collabora Evangelio secundum virtutem Dei: |
8 Do not blush, then, for the witness thou bearest to our Lord, or for me, who am his prisoner; share all the tribulations of the gospel message as God gives thee strength. |
9 Who hath delivered us and called us by his holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the times of the world. |
9 qui nos liberavit, et vocavit vocatione sua sancta, non secundum opera nostra, sed secundum propositum suum, et gratiam, quæ data est nobis in Christo Jesu ante tempora sæcularia. |
9 Has he not saved us, and called us to a vocation of holiness? It was not because of anything we had done; we owe it to his own design, to the grace lavished on us, long ages ago, in Christ Jesus. |
10 But is now made manifest by the illumination of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath destroyed death, and hath brought to light life and incorruption by the gospel: |
10 Manifestata est autem nunc per illuminationem Salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi, qui destruxit quidem mortem, illuminavit autem vitam, et incorruptionem per Evangelium: |
10 Now it has come to light, since our Saviour Jesus Christ came to enlighten us; now he has annulled death, now he has shed abroad the rays of life and immortality, through that gospel |
11 Wherein I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles. |
11 in quo positus sum ego prædicator, et Apostolus, et magister gentium. |
11 which I have been appointed to herald, as an apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles. |
12 For which cause I also suffer these things: but I am not ashamed. For I know whom I have believed, and I am certain that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him, against that day. |
12 Ob quam causam etiam hæc patior, sed non confundor. Scio enim cui credidi, et certus sum quia potens est depositum meum servare in illum diem. |
12 This is what I have to suffer as the result; but I am not put to the blush. He, to whom I have given my confidence, is no stranger to me, and I am fully persuaded that he has the means to keep my pledge safe, until that day comes. |
13 Hold the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me in faith, and in the love which is in Christ Jesus. |
13 Formam habe sanorum verborum, quæ a me audisti in fide, et in dilectione in Christo Jesu. |
13 With all the faith and love thou hast in Christ Jesus, keep to the pattern of sound doctrine thou hast learned from my lips. |
14 Keep the good thing committed to thy trust by the Holy Ghost, who dwelleth in us. |
14 Bonum depositum custodi per Spiritum Sanctum, qui habitat in nobis. |
14 By the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, be true to thy high trust. |
15 Thou knowest this, that all they who are in Asia, are turned away from me: of whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes. |
15 Scis hoc, quod aversi sunt a me omnes, qui in Asia sunt, ex quibus est Phigellus, et Hermogenes. |
15 In Asia, as thou knowest, all have treated me coldly, Phigellus and Hermogenes among them. |
16 The Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus: because he hath often refreshed me, and hath not been ashamed of my chain: |
16 Det misericordiam Dominus Onesiphori domui: quia sæpe me refrigeravit, et catenam meam non erubuit: |
16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus; often enough he revived my spirits. Instead of being ashamed of a prisoner’s acquaintance, |
17 But when he was come to Rome, he carefully sought me, and found me. |
17 sed cum Romam venisset, sollicite me quæsivit, et invenit. |
17 he sought me out when he was in Rome, and succeeded in finding me. |
18 The Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou very well knowest. |
18 Det illi Dominus invenire misericordiam a Domino in illa die. Et quanta Ephesi ministravit mihi, tu melius nosti. |
18 The Lord grant that he may find mercy with his Lord when that day comes; what he did for me in Ephesus I have no need to tell thee. |
