1 Be sure of this, that in the world’s last age there are perilous times coming. |
1 Know also this, that, in the last days, shall come dangerous times. |
2 erunt homines seipsos amantes, cupidi, elati, superbi, blasphemi, parentibus non obedientes, ingrati, scelesti, |
2 Men will be in love with self, in love with money, boastful, proud, abusive; without reverence for their parents, without gratitude, without scruple, |
2 Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, |
3 sine affectione, sine pace, criminatores, incontinentes, immites, sine benignitate, |
3 without love, without peace; slanderers, incontinent, strangers to pity and to kindness; |
3 Without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness, |
4 treacherous, reckless, full of vain conceit, thinking rather of their pleasures than of God. |
4 Traitors, stubborn, puffed up, and lovers of pleasures more than of God: |
5 habentes speciem quidem pietatis, virtutem autem ejus abnegantes. Et hos devita: |
5 They will preserve all the outward form of religion, although they have long been strangers to its meaning. From these, too, turn away. |
5 Having an appearance indeed of godliness, but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid. |
6 They count among their number the men that will make their way into house after house, captivating weak women whose consciences are burdened by sin; women swayed by shifting passions, |
6 For of these sort are they who creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires: |
7 who are for ever inquiring, yet never attain to recognition of the truth. |
7 Ever learning, and never attaining to the knowledge of the truth. |
8 Moses found rivals in Jannes and Mambres; just so the men I speak of set themselves up in rivalry against the truth, men whose minds are corrupt, whose faith is counterfeit; |
8 Now as Jannes and Mambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth, men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith. |
9 yet they will come to little, they will soon be detected, like those others, in their rash folly. |
9 But they shall proceed no farther; for their folly shall be manifest to all men, as theirs also was. |
10 Tu autem assecutus es meam doctrinam, institutionem, propositum, fidem, longanimitatem, dilectionem, patientiam, |
10 Not such was the schooling, the guidance, thou hadst from me; in firm resolve, in faith, in patience, in love, in endurance; |
10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, |
11 all my persecutions and suffering, such as those which befell me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra; what persecutions I underwent! And yet the Lord brought me through them all safely. |
11 Persecutions, afflictions: such as came upon me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra: what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me. |
12 Et omnes, qui pie volunt vivere in Christo Jesu, persecutionem patientur. |
12 And indeed, all those who are resolved to live a holy life in Christ Jesus will meet with persecution; |
12 And all that will live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution. |
13 while the rogues and the mountebanks go on from bad to worse, at once impostors and dupes. |
13 But evil men and seducers shall grow worse and worse: erring, and driving into error. |
14 Tu vero permane in iis quæ didicisti, et credita sunt tibi: sciens a quo didiceris: |
14 It is for thee to hold fast by the doctrine handed on to thee, the charge committed to thee; thou knowest well, from whom that tradition came; |
14 But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned them; |
15 thou canst remember the holy learning thou hast been taught from childhood upwards. This will train thee up for salvation, through the faith which rests in Christ Jesus. |
15 And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
16 Everything in the scripture has been divinely inspired, and has its uses; to instruct us, to expose our errors, to correct our faults, to educate us in holy living; |
16 All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice, |
17 so God’s servant will become a master of his craft, and each noble task that comes will find him ready for it. |
17 That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work. |
