It was now two days to the paschal feast and the time of unleavened bread; and the chief priests and scribes were trying to bring Jesus into their power by cunning, and put him to death;

Erat autem Pascha et azyma post biduum: et quærebant summi sacerdotes et scribæ quomodo eum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.

Now the feast of the pasch, and of the Azymes was after two days; and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might by some wile lay hold on him, and kill him.

But not on the day of the feast, they said, or there may be an uproar among the people.

Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.

But they said: Not on the festival day, lest there should be a tumult among the people.

And then, while he was in the house of Simon the leper, at Bethany, sitting at table, a woman came in with a pot of very precious spikenard ointment, which, first breaking the pot, she poured over his head.

Et cum esset Bethaniæ in domo Simonis leprosi, et recumberet, venit mulier habens alabastrum unguenti nardi spicati pretiosi: et fracto alabastro, effudit super caput ejus.

And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of precious spikenard: and breaking the alabaster box, she poured it out upon his head.

There were some present who were indignant when they saw it, and said among themselves, What did she mean by wasting the ointment so?

Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos, et dicentes: Ut quid perditio ista unguenti facta est?

Now there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made?

This ointment might have been sold for three hundred pieces of silver, and alms might have been given to the poor. And they rebuked her angrily.

poterat enim unguentum istud venundari plus quam trecentis denariis, et dari pauperibus. Et fremebant in eam.

For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

But Jesus said, Let her alone; why should you vex her? She did well to treat me so.

Jesus autem dixit: Sinite eam, quid illi molesti estis? Bonum opus operata est in me:

But Jesus said: Let her alone, why do you molest her? She hath wrought a good work upon me.

You have the poor among you always, so that you can do good to them when you will; I am not always among you.

semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum: et cum volueritis, potestis illis benefacere: me autem non semper habetis.

For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.

She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand to prepare it for burial.

Quod habuit hæc, fecit: prævenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.

She hath done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body for the burial.

I promise you, in whatever part of the world this gospel is preached, the story of what she has done shall be told in its place, to preserve her memory.

Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests and offered to betray him into their hands.

And they, listening to him eagerly, promised him money; whereupon he looked about for an opportunity to betray him.

Who hearing it were glad; and they promised him they would give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

On the first of the days of unleavened bread, when they killed the paschal victim, his disciples asked him, Where wilt thou have us go and make ready for thee to eat the paschal meal?

Et primo die azymorum quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli: Quo vis eamus, et paremus tibi ut manduces Pascha?

Now on the first day of the unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the pasch, the disciples say to him: Whither wilt thou that we go, and prepare for thee to eat the pasch?

And he sent two of his disciples on this errand, Go into the city, and there a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water; you are to follow him,

Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis, et dicit eis: Ite in civitatem, et occurret vobis homo lagenam aquæ bajulans: sequimini eum,

And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith to them: Go ye into the city; and there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water, follow him;

and say to the owner of the house into which he enters, The master says, Where is my room, in which I am to eat the paschal meal with my disciples?

et quocumque introierit, dicite domino domus, quia magister dicit: Ubi est refectio mea, ubi Pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?

And whithersoever he shall go in, say to the master of the house, The master saith, Where is my refectory, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples?

And he will shew you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; it is there that you are to make ready for us.

Et ipse vobis demonstrabit cœnaculum grande, stratum: et illic parate nobis.

And he will shew you a large dining room furnished; and there prepare ye for us.

So the disciples left him and went into the city, where they found all as he had told them, and so made ready for the paschal meal.

Et abierunt discipuli ejus, et venerunt in civitatem: et invenerunt sicut dixerat illis, et paraverunt Pascha.

And his disciples went their way, and came into the city; and they found as he had told them, and they prepared the pasch.

When it was evening, he came there with the twelve.

And when evening was come, he cometh with the twelve.

And as they sat at table and were eating, Jesus said, Believe me, one of you, one who is eating with me, is to betray me.

Et discumbentibus eis, et manducantibus, ait Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia unus ex vobis tradet me, qui manducat mecum.

And when they were at table and eating, Jesus saith: Amen I say to you, one of you that eateth with me shall betray me.

They began to ask him sorrowfully, each in turn, Is it I? and then another, Is it I?

But they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one: Is it I?

He told them, It is one of the twelve, the man who puts his hand into the dish with me.

Who saith to them: One of the twelve, who dippeth with me his hand in the dish.

The Son of Man goes on his way, as the scripture foretells of him; but woe upon that man by whom the Son of Man is to be betrayed; better for that man if he had never been born.

Et Filius quidem hominis vadit sicut scriptum est de eo: væ autem homini illi per quem Filius hominis tradetur! bonum erat ei, si non esset natus homo ille.

And the Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed. It were better for him, if that man had not been born.

And while they were still at table, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, Take this; this is my body.

And whilst they were eating, Jesus took bread; and blessing, broke, and gave to them, and said: Take ye. This is my body.

Then he took a cup, and offered thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said,

Et accepto calice, gratias agens dedit eis: et biberunt ex illo omnes.

And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank of it.

This is my blood of the new testament, shed for many.

Et ait illis: Hic est sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur.

And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.

I tell you truthfully, I shall not drink of this fruit of the vine again, until the day when I drink it with you, new wine, in the kingdom of God.

Amen dico vobis, quia jam non bibam de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei.

Amen I say to you, that I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it new in the kingdom of God.

And so they sang a hymn, and went out to mount Olivet.

And Jesus said to them, Tonight you will all lose courage over me; for so it has been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.

And Jesus saith to them: You will all be scandalized in my regard this night; for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep shall be dispersed.

But I will go on before you into Galilee, when I have risen from the dead.

Peter said to him, Though all else should lose courage over thee, I will never lose mine.

But Peter saith to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, yet not I.

And Jesus said to him, Believe me, this night, before the second cock-crow, thou wilt thrice disown me.

Et ait illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi, quia tu hodie in nocte hac, priusquam gallus vocem bis dederit, ter me es negaturus.

And Jesus saith to him: Amen I say to thee, to day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

But Peter insisted more than ever, I will not disown thee, though I must lay down my life with thee. And all of them said the like.

At ille amplius loquebatur: Et si oportuerit me simul commori tibi, non te negabo. Similiter autem et omnes dicebant.

But he spoke the more vehemently: Although I should die together with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all.

So they came to a plot of land called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples, Sit down here, while I go and pray.

And they came to a farm called Gethsemani. And he saith to his disciples: Sit you here, while I pray.

But he took Peter and James and John with him. And now he grew dismayed and distressed:

Et assumit Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem secum: et cœpit pavere et tædere.

And he taketh Peter and James and John with him; and he began to fear and to be heavy.

My soul, he said to them, is ready to die with sorrow; do you abide here, and keep watch.

Et ait illis: Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem: sustinete hic, et vigilate.

And he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death; stay you here, and watch.

So he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass him by:

Et cum processisset paululum, procidit super terram, et orabat ut, si fieri posset, transiret ab eo hora.

And when he was gone forward a little, he fell flat on the ground; and he prayed, that if it might be, the hour might pass from him.

Abba, Father, he said, all things are possible to thee; take away this chalice from before me; only as thy will is, not as mine is.

Et dixit: Abba pater, omnia tibi possibilia sunt: transfer calicem hunc a me: sed non quod ego volo, sed quod tu.

And he saith: Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: remove this chalice from me; but not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Then he went back, and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, Simon, art thou sleeping? Hadst thou not strength to watch even for an hour?

Et venit, et invenit eos dormientes. Et ait Petro: Simon, dormis? non potuisti una hora vigilare?

And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping. And he saith to Peter: Simon, sleepest thou? couldst thou not watch one hour?

Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing enough, but the flesh is weak.

vigilate et orate, ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro vero infirma.

Then he went away and prayed again, using the same words.

Et iterum abiens oravit, eumdem sermonem dicens.

And going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.

And when he returned, once more he found them asleep, so heavy their eyelids were; and they did not know what answer to make to him.

Et reversus, denuo invenit eos dormientes (erant enim oculi eorum gravati), et ignorabant quid responderent ei.

And when he returned, he found them again asleep, (for their eyes were heavy,) and they knew not what to answer him.

When he came the third time, he said to them, Sleep and take your rest hereafter. Enough; the time has come; behold, the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Et venit tertio, et ait illis: Dormite jam, et requiescite. Sufficit: venit hora: ecce Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.

And he cometh the third time, and saith to them: Sleep ye now, and take your rest. It is enough: the hour is come: behold the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Rise up, let us go on our way; already, he that is to betray me is close at hand.

Surgite, eamus: ecce qui me tradet, prope est.

And thereupon, while he was yet speaking, Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, came near; with him was a great multitude carrying swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

Et, adhuc eo loquente, venit Judas Iscariotes unus de duodecim, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis et lignis, a summis sacerdotibus, et scribis, et senioribus.

And while he was yet speaking, cometh Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve: and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the ancients.

The traitor had appointed them a signal; It is none other, he said, than the man whom I shall greet with a kiss; hold him fast, and take him away under guard.

Dederat autem traditor ejus signum eis, dicens: Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum, et ducite caute.

And he that betrayed him, had given them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; lay hold on him, and lead him away carefully.

No sooner, then, had he come up than he went close to Jesus, saying, Hail, Master, and kissed him;

Et cum venisset, statim accedens ad eum, ait: Ave Rabbi: et osculatus est eum.

And when he was come, immediately going up to him, he saith: Hail, Rabbi; and he kissed him.

and with that they laid their hands on him, and held him fast.

And one of those who stood by drew his sword, and smote one of the high priest’s servants with it, cutting off his ear.

And one of them that stood by, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the chief priest, and cut off his ear.

Then Jesus said to them aloud, You have come out to my arrest with swords and clubs, as if I were a robber;

Et respondens Jesus, ait illis: Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et lignis comprehendere me?

And Jesus answering, said to them: Are you come out as to a robber, with swords and staves to apprehend me?

and yet I used to teach in the temple close to you, day after day, and you never laid hands on me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled.

quotidie eram apud vos in templo docens, et non me tenuistis. Sed ut impleantur Scripturæ.

I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not lay hands on me. But that the scriptures may be fulfilled.

And now all his disciples abandoned him, and fled.

There was a young man there following him, who was wearing only a linen shirt on his bare body; and he, when they laid hold of him,

Adolescens autem quidam sequebatur eum amictus sindone super nudo: et tenuerunt eum.

And a certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and they laid hold on him.

left the shirt in their hands, and ran away from them naked.

At ille rejecta sindone, nudus profugit ab eis.

But he, casting off the linen cloth, fled from them naked.

So they took Jesus into the presence of the high priest, and all the chief priests and elders and scribes were assembled about him.

Et adduxerunt Jesum ad summum sacerdotem: et convenerunt omnes sacerdotes, et scribæ, et seniores.

And they brought Jesus to the high priest; and all the priests and the scribes and the ancients assembled together.

Yet Peter followed at a long distance, right into the high priest’s palace, and there sat down with the servants by the fire, to warm himself.

Petrus autem a longe secutus est eum usque intro in atrium summi sacerdotis: et sedebat cum ministris ad ignem, et calefaciebat se.

And Peter followed him afar off, even into the court of the high priest; and he sat with the servants at the fire, and warmed himself.

The high priest and all the council tried to find an accusation against Jesus, such as would compass his death, but they could find none;

Summi vero sacerdotes et omne concilium quærebant adversus Jesum testimonium ut eum morti traderent: nec inveniebant.

And the chief priests and all the council sought for evidence against Jesus, that they might put him to death, and found none.

many accused him falsely, but their accusations did not agree.

Multi enim testimonium falsum dicebant adversus eum: et convenientia testimonia non erant.
56
For many bore false witness against him, and their evidences were not agreeing.

There were some who stood up and falsely accused him thus:

Et quidam surgentes, falsum testimonium ferebant adversus eum, dicentes:

And some rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:

We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made by men’s hands, and in three days I will build another, with no hand of man to help me.

Quoniam nos audivimus eum dicentem: Ego dissolvam templum hoc manu factum, et per triduum aliud non manu factum ædificabo.

We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another not made with hands.

But even so their accusations did not agree.

Et non erat conveniens testimonium illorum.

And their witness did not agree.

Then the high priest stood up, and asked Jesus, Hast thou no answer to the accusations these men bring against thee?

Et exsurgens summus sacerdos in medium, interrogavit Jesum, dicens: Non respondes quidquam ad ea quæ tibi objiciuntur ab his?

And the high priest rising up in the midst, asked Jesus, saying: Answerest thou nothing to the things that are laid to thy charge by these men?

He was still silent, still did not answer; and the high priest questioned him again, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the blessed God?

Ille autem tacebat, et nihil respondit. Rursum summus sacerdos interrogabat eum, et dixit ei: Tu es Christus Filius Dei benedicti?

But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him: Art thou the Christ the Son of the blessed God?

Jesus said to him, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of God’s power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.

Jesus autem dixit illi: Ego sum: et videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem cum nubibus cæli.

And Jesus said to him: I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming with the clouds of heaven.

At this, the high priest tore his garments, and said, What further need have we of witnesses?

Summus autem sacerdos scindens vestimenta sua, ait: Quid adhuc desideramus testes?

Then the high priest rending his garments, saith: What need we any further witnesses?

You have heard his blasphemy for yourselves; what is your finding? And they all pronounced against him a sentence of death.

Audistis blasphemiam: quid vobis videtur? Qui omnes condemnaverunt eum esse reum mortis.

You have heard the blasphemy. What think you? Who all condemned him to be guilty of death.

Then some of them fell to spitting upon him, and covering his face while they buffeted him and bade him prophesy; the servants, too, caught him blows on the cheek.

Et cœperunt quidam conspuere eum, et velare faciem ejus, et colaphis eum cædere, et dicere ei: Prophetiza: et ministri alapis eum cædebant.

And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him: Prophesy: and the servants struck him with the palms of their hands.

Meanwhile, Peter was in the court without, and one of the maid-servants of the high priest came by;

Et cum esset Petrus in atrio deorsum, venit una ex ancillis summi sacerdotis:

Now when Peter was in the court below, there cometh one of the maidservants of the high priest.

she saw Peter warming himself, and said, looking closely at him, Thou too wast with Jesus the Nazarene.

et cum vidisset Petrum calefacientem se, aspiciens illum, ait: Et tu cum Jesu Nazareno eras.

And when she had seen Peter warming himself, looking on him she saith: Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

Whereupon he denied it; I know nothing of it, I do not understand what thou meanest. Then he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

At ille negavit, dicens: Neque scio, neque novi quid dicas. Et exiit foras ante atrium, et gallus cantavit.

But he denied, saying: I neither know nor understand what thou sayest. And he went forth before the court; and the cock crew.

Again the maid looked at him, and said to the bystanders, This is one of them.

Rursus autem cum vidisset illum ancilla, cœpit dicere circumstantibus: Quia hic ex illis est.

And again a maidservant seeing him, began to say to the standers by: This is one of them.

And again he denied it. Then, a little while afterwards, the bystanders said to Peter, It is certain that thou art one of them; why, thou art a Galilean.

At ille iterum negavit. Et post pusillum rursus qui astabant, dicebant Petro: Vere ex illis es: nam et Galilæus es.

But he denied again. And after a while they that stood by said again to Peter: Surely thou art one of them; for thou art also a Galilean.

And he fell to calling down curses on himself and swearing, I do not know the man you speak of.

Ille autem cœpit anathematizare et jurare: Quia nescio hominem istum, quem dicitis.

But he began to curse and to swear, saying; I know not this man of whom you speak.

Then came the second cock-crow; and Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him, Before the second cock-crow thou wilt thrice deny me. And all at once he burst out weeping.

Et statim gallus iterum cantavit. Et recordatus est Petrus verbi quod dixerat ei Jesus: Priusquam gallus cantet bis, ter me negabis. Et cœpit flere.

And immediately the cock crew again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said unto him: Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me. And he began to weep.
