1
1
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, to all the saints who are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus.
1
Paul, by God’s will an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those saints, the faithful in Jesus Christ, who dwell at Ephesus;
2
Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.
2
Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
2
Grace and peace be yours from God, our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3
Benedictus Deus et Pater Domini nostri Jesu Christi, qui benedixit nos in omni benedictione spirituali in cælestibus in Christo,
3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ:
3
Blessed be that God, that Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us, in Christ, with every spiritual blessing, higher than heaven itself.
4
sicut elegit nos in ipso ante mundi constitutionem, ut essemus sancti et immaculati in conspectu ejus in caritate.
4
As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity.
4
He has chosen us out, in Christ, before the foundation of the world, to be saints, to be blameless in his sight, for love of him;
5
Qui prædestinavit nos in adoptionem filiorum per Jesum Christum in ipsum: secundum propositum voluntatis suæ,
5
Who hath predestinated us unto the adoption of children through Jesus Christ unto himself: according to the purpose of his will:
5
marking us out beforehand (so his will decreed) to be his adopted children through Jesus Christ.
6
in laudem gloriæ gratiæ suæ, in qua gratificavit nos in dilecto Filio suo.
6
Unto the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he hath graced us in his beloved son.
6
Thus he would manifest the splendour of that grace by which he has taken us into his favour in the person of his beloved Son.
7
In quo habemus redemptionem per sanguinem ejus, remissionem peccatorum secundum divitias gratiæ ejus,
7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace,
7
It is in him and through his blood that we enjoy redemption, the forgiveness of our sins. So rich is God’s grace,
8
quæ superabundavit in nobis in omni sapientia et prudentia:
8
Which hath superabounded in us in all wisdom and prudence,
8
that has overflowed upon us in a full stream of wisdom and discernment,
9
ut notum faceret nobis sacramentum voluntatis suæ, secundum beneplacitum ejus, quod proposuit in eo,
9
That he might make known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he hath purposed in him,
9
to make known to us the hidden purpose of his will. It was his loving design, centred in Christ,
10
in dispensatione plenitudinis temporum, instaurare omnia in Christo, quæ in cælis et quæ in terra sunt, in ipso;
10
In the dispensation of the fulness of times, to re-establish all things in Christ, that are in heaven and on earth, in him.
10
to give history its fulfilment by resuming everything in him, all that is in heaven, all that is on earth, summed up in him.
11
11
In whom we also are called by lot, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things according to the counsel of his will.
11
In him it was our lot to be called, singled out beforehand to suit his purpose (for it is he who is at work everywhere, carrying out the designs of his will);
12
ut simus in laudem gloriæ ejus nos, qui ante speravimus in Christo;
12
That we may be unto the praise of his glory, we who before hoped in Christ:
12
we were to manifest his glory, we who were the first to set our hope in Christ;
13
13
In whom you also, after you had heard the word of truth, (the gospel of your salvation;) in whom also believing, you were signed with the holy Spirit of promise,
13
in him you too were called, when you listened to the preaching of the truth, that gospel which is your salvation. In him you too learned to believe, and had the seal set on your faith by the promised gift of the Holy Spirit;
14
qui est pignus hæreditatis nostræ, in redemptionem acquisitionis, in laudem gloriæ ipsius.
14
Who is the pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of acquisition, unto the praise of his glory.
14
a pledge of the inheritance which is ours, to redeem it for us and bring us into possession of it, and so manifest God’s glory.
15
Propterea et ego audiens fidem vestram, quæ est in Domino Jesu, et dilectionem in omnes sanctos,
15
Wherefore I also, hearing of your faith that is in the Lord Jesus, and of your love towards all the saints,
15
Well then, I too play my part; I have been told of your faith in the Lord Jesus, of the love you shew towards all the saints,
16
16
Cease not to give thanks for you, making commemoration of you in my prayers,
16
and I never cease to offer thanks on your behalf, or to remember you in my prayers.
17
ut Deus, Domini nostri Jesu Christi Pater gloriæ, det vobis spiritum sapientiæ et revelationis in agnitione ejus,
17
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation, in the knowledge of him:
17
So may he who is the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father to whom glory belongs, grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight, to give you fuller knowledge of himself.
18
18
The eyes of your heart enlightened, that you may know what the hope is of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.
18
May your inward eye be enlightened, so that you may understand to what hopes he has called you, how rich in glory is that inheritance of his found among the saints,
19
19
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power towards us, who believe according to the operation of the might of his power,
19
what surpassing virtue there is in his dealings with us, who believe. Measure it by that mighty exercise of power
20
20
Which he wrought in Christ, raising him up from the dead, and setting him on his right hand in the heavenly places.
20
which he shewed when he raised Christ from the dead, and bade him sit on his right hand above the heavens,
21
21
Above all principality, and power, and virtue, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.
21
high above all princedoms and powers and virtues and dominations, and every name that is known, not in this world only, but in the world to come.
22
Et omnia subjecit sub pedibus ejus: et ipsum dedit caput supra omnem ecclesiam,
22
And he hath subjected all things under his feet, and hath made him head over all the church,
22
He has put everything under his dominion, and made him the head to which the whole Church is joined,
23
23
Which is his body, and the fulness of him who is filled all in all.
23
so that the Church is his body, the completion of him who everywhere and in all things is complete.
