Paulus, Apostolus non ab hominibus, neque per hominem, sed per Jesum Christum, et Deum Patrem, qui suscitavit eum a mortuis:

Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead,

And all the brethren who are with me, to the churches of Galatia.

Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre, et Domino nostro Jesu Christo,

Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

qui dedit semetipsum pro peccatis nostris, ut eriperet nos de præsenti sæculo nequam, secundum voluntatem Dei et Patris nostri,

Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present wicked world, according to the will of God and our Father:

He it is who has given himself up for our sins, to rescue us from the evil world that surrounds us, according to the will of God, who is our Father;

cui est gloria in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

To whom is glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Miror quod sic tam cito transferimini ab eo qui vos vocavit in gratiam Christi in aliud Evangelium:

I wonder that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel.

I am astounded that you should be so quick to desert one who called you to the grace of Christ, and go over to another gospel;

quod non est aliud, nisi sunt aliqui qui vos conturbant, et volunt convertere Evangelium Christi.

Which is not another, only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

this can only mean, that certain people are causing disquiet among you, in their eagerness to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Sed licet nos aut angelus de cælo evangelizet vobis præterquam quod evangelizavimus vobis, anathema sit.
8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema.

Friends, though it were we ourselves, though it were an angel from heaven that should preach to you a gospel other than the gospel we preached to you, a curse upon him!

Sicut prædiximus, et nunc iterum dico: si quis vobis evangelizaverit præter id quod accepistis, anathema sit.
9
As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema.

I repeat now the warning we gave you before it happened, if anyone preaches to you what is contrary to the tradition you received, a curse upon him!

Modo enim hominibus suadeo, an Deo? an quæro hominibus placere? si adhuc hominibus placerem, Christi servus non essem.

For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Do you think it is man’s favour, or God’s, that I am trying to win now? Shall I be told, now, that I am courting the good will of men? If, after all these years, I were still courting the favour of men, I should not be what I am, the slave of Christ.

Notum enim vobis facio, fratres, Evangelium, quod evangelizatum est a me, quia non est secundum hominem:

For I give you to understand, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.

Let me tell you this, brethren; the gospel I preached to you is not a thing of man’s dictation;
12
neque enim ego ab homine accepi illud, neque didici, sed per revelationem Jesu Christi.
12
For neither did I receive it of man, nor did I learn it; but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

it was not from man that I inherited or learned it, it came to me by a revelation from Jesus Christ.

Audistis enim conversationem meam aliquando in Judaismo: quoniam supra modum persequebar Ecclesiam Dei, et expugnabam illam,

For you have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion: how that, beyond measure, I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it.

You have been told how I bore myself in my Jewish days, how I persecuted God’s Church beyond measure and tried to destroy it,
14
et proficiebam in Judaismo supra multos coætaneos meos in genere meo, abundantius æmulator existens paternarum mearum traditionum.

And I made progress in the Jews’ religion above many of my equals in my own nation, being more abundantly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

going further in my zeal as a Jew than many of my own age and race, so fierce a champion was I of the traditions handed down by my forefathers.

Cum autem placuit ei, qui me segregavit ex utero matris meæ, et vocavit per gratiam suam,

But when it pleased him, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace,

And then, he who had set me apart from the day of my birth, and called me by his grace, saw fit

ut revelaret Filium suum in me, ut evangelizarem illum in gentibus: continuo non acquievi carni et sanguini,

To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, immediately I condescended not to flesh and blood.

to make his Son known in me, so that I could preach his gospel among the Gentiles. My first thought was not to hold any consultations with any human creature;

neque veni Jerosolymam ad antecessores meos Apostolos: sed abii in Arabiam, et iterum reversus sum Damascum:

Neither went I to Jerusalem, to the apostles who were before me: but I went into Arabia, and again I returned to Damascus.

I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who had been apostles longer than myself; no, I went off into Arabia, and when I came back, it was to Damascus.

deinde post annos tres veni Jerosolymam videre Petrum, et mansi apud eum diebus quindecim:

Then, after three years, I went to Jerusalem, to see Peter, and I tarried with him fifteen days.

Then, when three years had passed, I did go up to Jerusalem, to visit Peter, and I stayed a fortnight there in his company;

alium autem Apostolorum vidi neminem, nisi Jacobum fratrem Domini.

But other of the apostles I saw none, saving James the brother of the Lord.

but I did not see any of the other apostles, except James, the Lord’s brother.

Quæ autem scribo vobis, ecce coram Deo, quia non mentior.

Now the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I lie not.

Such is my history; as God sees me, I am telling you the plain truth.

Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

Afterwards, I travelled into other parts of the world, Syria and Cilicia;

Eram autem ignotus facie ecclesiis Judææ, quæ erant in Christo:

And I was unknown by face to the churches of Judea, which were in Christ:

and all the time I was not even known by sight to the Christian churches of Judaea;

tantum autem auditum habebant quoniam qui persequebatur nos aliquando, nunc evangelizat fidem, quam aliquando expugnabat:

But they had heard only: He, who persecuted us in times past, doth now preach the faith which once he impugned:

they only knew by hearsay, The man who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy,
24
et in me clarificabant Deum.

And they glorified God in me.

and they praised God for what he had done in me.
