Et introivit iterum in synagogam: et erat ibi homo habens manum aridam.

And he entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand.

And once more he went into a synagogue; and there was a man there who had one of his hands withered;

Et observabant eum, si sabbatis curaret, ut accusarent illum.

And they watched him whether he would heal on the sabbath days; that they might accuse him.

and they were watching him, to see whether he would do a work of healing on the sabbath, so that they might have a charge to bring against him.

Et ait homini habenti manum aridam: Surge in medium.
3
And he said to the man who had the withered hand: Stand up in the midst.

So he said to the man who had his hand withered, Rise up, and come forward.

Et dicit eis: Licet sabbatis benefacere, an male? animam salvam facere, an perdere? At illi tacebant.

And he saith to them: Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy? But they held their peace.

Then he said to them, Which is right, to do good on the sabbath day, or to do harm? To save life, or to make away with it? And they sat there in silence.

Et circumspiciens eos cum ira, contristatus super cæcitate cordis eorum, dicit homini: Extende manum tuam. Et extendit, et restituta est manus illi.

And looking round about on them with anger, being grieved for the blindness of their hearts, he saith to the man: Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth: and his hand was restored unto him.

And he looked round on them in anger, grieved at the hardness of their hearts, and said to the man, Stretch out thy hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored to him.

Exeuntes autem pharisæi, statim cum Herodianis consilium faciebant adversus eum quomodo eum perderent.

And the Pharisees going out, immediately made a consultation with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

Then the Pharisees went out, and at once began plotting with those who were of Herod’s party to make away with him.

Jesus autem cum discipulis suis secessit ad mare: et multa turba a Galilæa et Judæa secuta est eum,

But Jesus retired with his disciples to the sea; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee and Judea,

But Jesus withdrew, with his disciples, towards the sea; and great crowds followed him from Galilee, and from Judaea,

et ab Jerosolymis, et ab Idumæa, et trans Jordanem: et qui circa Tyrum et Sidonem multitudo magna, audientes quæ faciebat, venerunt ad eum.

And from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. And they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing the things which he did, came to him.

and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and those who lived about Tyre and Sidon, hearing of all that he did, came in great numbers to him.

Et dicit discipulis suis ut navicula sibi deserviret propter turbam, ne comprimerent eum:

And he spoke to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

So he told his disciples to keep a boat ready at need because of the multitude, for fear they should press on him too close;

multos enim sanabat, ita ut irruerent in eum ut illum tangerent, quotquot habebant plagas.

For he healed many, so that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had evils.

for he did many works of healing, so that all those who were visited with suffering thrust themselves upon him, to touch him.

Et spiritus immundi, cum illum videbant, procidebant ei: et clamabant, dicentes:

And the unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him: and they cried, saying:

The unclean spirits, too, whenever they saw him, used to fall at his feet and cry out,
12
Tu es Filius Dei. Et vehementer comminabatur eis ne manifestarent illum.

Thou art the Son of God. And he strictly charged them that they should not make him known.

Thou art the Son of God; and he would give them a strict charge not to make him known.

Et ascendens in montem vocavit ad se quos voluit ipse: et venerunt ad eum.

And going up into a mountain, he called unto him whom he would himself: and they came to him.

Then he went up on to the mountain-side, and called to him those whom it pleased him to call; so these came to him,

Et fecit ut essent duodecim cum illo: et ut mitteret eos prædicare.

And he made that twelve should be with him, and that he might send them to preach.

and he appointed twelve to be his companions, and to go out preaching at his command,

Et dedit illis potestatem curandi infirmitates et ejiciendi dæmonia.

And he gave them power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.

with power to cure diseases and to cast out devils.

Et imposuit Simoni nomen Petrus:

And to Simon he gave the name Peter:

To Simon he gave the fresh name of Peter;

et Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem Jacobi, et imposuit eis nomina Boanerges, quod est, Filii tonitrui:

And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he named them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

to James the son of Zebedee and his brother John, he gave the fresh name of Boanerges, that is, Sons of thunder.

et Andream, et Philippum, et Bartholomæum, et Matthæum, et Thomam, et Jacobum Alphæi, et Thaddæum, et Simonem Cananæum,

And Andrew and Philip, and Bartholomew and Matthew, and Thomas and James of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Cananean:

The others were Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananean;

et Judam Iscariotem, qui et tradidit illum.

And Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

and Judas Iscariot, the traitor.

Et veniunt ad domum: et convenit iterum turba, ita ut non possent neque panem manducare.

And they come to a house, and the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

And now they came into a house, and once more the multitude gathered so that they had no room even to sit and eat.

Et cum audissent sui, exierunt tenere eum: dicebant enim: Quoniam in furorem versus est.

And when his friends had heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him. For they said: He is become mad.
21
When word came to those who were nearest him, they went out to restrain him; they said, He must be mad.
22
Et scribæ, qui ab Jerosolymis descenderant, dicebant: Quoniam Beelzebub habet, et quia in principe dæmoniorum ejicit dæmonia.
22
And the scribes who were come down from Jerusalem, said: He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of devils he casteth out devils.
22
And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, He is possessed by Beelzebub; it is through the prince of the devils that he casts the devils out.

Et convocatis eis in parabolis dicebat illis: Quomodo potest Satanas Satanam ejicere?

And after he had called them together, he said to them in parables: How can Satan cast out Satan?

So he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables; How can it be Satan who casts Satan out?

Et si regnum in se dividatur, non potest regnum illud stare.
24
And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
24
Why, if a kingdom is at war with itself, that kingdom cannot stand firm,
25
Et si domus super semetipsam dispertiatur, non potest domus illa stare.
25
And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
25
and if a household is at war with itself, that household cannot stand firm;
26
Et si Satanas consurrexerit in semetipsum, dispertitus est, et non poterit stare, sed finem habet.

And if Satan be risen up against himself, he is divided, and cannot stand, but hath an end.

if Satan, then, has risen up in arms against Satan, he is at war with himself; he cannot stand firm; his end has come.
27
Nemo potest vasa fortis ingressus in domum diripere, nisi prius fortem alliget, et tunc domum ejus diripiet.
27
No man can enter into the house of a strong man and rob him of his goods, unless he first bind the strong man, and then shall he plunder his house.
27
No one can enter into a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, without first making the strong man his prisoner; then he can plunder his house at will.
28
Amen dico vobis, quoniam omnia dimittentur filiis hominum peccata, et blasphemiæ quibus blasphemaverint:
28
Amen I say to you, that all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and the blasphemies wherewith they shall blaspheme:

Believe me, there is pardon for all the other sins of mankind and the blasphemies they utter;
29
qui autem blasphemaverit in Spiritum Sanctum, non habebit remissionem in æternum, sed reus erit æterni delicti.

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, shall never have forgiveness, but shall be guilty of an everlasting sin.

but if a man blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, there is no pardon for him in all eternity; he is guilty of a sin which is eternal.
30
Quoniam dicebant: Spiritum immundum habet.

Because they said: He hath an unclean spirit.
30
This was because they were saying, He has an unclean spirit.

Et veniunt mater ejus et fratres: et foris stantes miserunt ad eum vocantes eum,

And his mother and his brethren came; and standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
31
Then his mother and his brethren came and sent a message to him, calling him to them, while they stood without.
32
et sedebat circa eum turba: et dicunt ei: Ecce mater tua et fratres tui foris quærunt te.

And the multitude sat about him; and they say to him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
32
There was a multitude sitting round him when they told him, Here are thy mother and thy brethren without, looking for thee.

Et respondens eis, ait: Quæ est mater mea et fratres mei?
33
And answering them, he said: Who is my mother and my brethren?
33
And he answered them, Who is a mother, who are brethren, to me?
34
Et circumspiciens eos, qui in circuitu ejus sedebant, ait: Ecce mater mea et fratres mei.

And looking round about on them who sat about him, he saith: Behold my mother and my brethren.
34
Then he looked about at those who were sitting around him, and said, Here are my mother and my brethren!
35
Qui enim fecerit voluntatem Dei, hic frater meus, et soror mea, et mater est.
35
For whosoever shall do the will of God, he is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
35
If anyone does the will of God, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.
