1
1
Believe me when I tell you this; the man who climbs into the sheep-fold by some other way, instead of entering by the door, comes to steal and to plunder:
1
Amen, amen I say to you: He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber.
2
2
it is the shepherd, who tends the sheep, that comes in by the door.
2
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3
Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem ejus audiunt, et proprias oves vocat nominatim, et educit eas.
3
At his coming the keeper of the door throws it open, and the sheep are attentive to his voice; and so he calls by name the sheep which belong to him, and leads them out with him.
3
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
4
4
When he has brought out all the sheep which belong to him, he walks in front of them, and the sheep follow him, recognizing his voice.
4
And when he hath let out his own sheep, he goeth before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.
5
5
If a stranger comes, they run away from him instead of following him; they cannot recognize the voice of a stranger.
5
But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers.
6
6
This was a parable which Jesus told them; and they could not understand what he meant to say to them.
6
This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke to them.
7
Dixit ergo eis iterum Jesus: Amen, amen dico vobis, quia ego sum ostium ovium.
7
So Jesus spoke to them again; Believe me, he said, it is I who am the door of the sheep-fold.
7
Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8
8
Those others who have found their way in are all thieves and robbers; to these, the sheep paid no attention.
8
All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not.
9
Ego sum ostium.
9
I am the door; a man will find salvation if he makes his way in through me; he will come and go at will, and find pasture.
9
I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and go out, and shall find pastures.
10
10
The thief only comes to steal, to slaughter, to destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.
10
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly.
11
Ego sum pastor bonus. Bonus pastor animam suam dat pro ovibus suis.
11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep,
11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.
12
Mercenarius autem, et qui non est pastor, cujus non sunt oves propriæ, videt lupum venientem, et dimittit oves, et fugit: et lupus rapit, et dispergit oves;
12
whereas the hireling, who is no shepherd, and does not claim the sheep as his own, abandons the sheep and takes to flight as soon as he sees the wolf coming, and so the wolf harries the sheep and scatters them.
12
But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth: and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep:
13
13
The hireling, then, takes to flight because he is only a hireling, because he has no concern over the sheep.
13
And the hireling flieth, because he is a hireling: and he hath no care for the sheep.
14
Ego sum pastor bonus: et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meæ.
14
I am the good shepherd; my sheep are known to me and know me;
14
I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me.
15
15
just as I am known to my Father, and know him. And for these sheep I am laying down my life.
15
As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep.
16
16
I have other sheep too, which do not belong to this fold; I must bring them in too; they will listen to my voice; so there will be one fold, and one shepherd.
16
And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.
17
Propterea me diligit Pater: quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterum sumam eam.
17
This my Father loves in me, that I am laying down my life, to take it up again afterwards.
17
Therefore doth the Father love me: because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.
18
Nemo tollit eam a me: sed ego pono eam a meipso, et potestatem habeo ponendi eam, et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patre meo.
18
Nobody can rob me of it; I lay it down of my own accord. I am free to lay it down, free to take it up again; that is the charge which my Father has given me.
18
No man taketh it away from me: but I lay it down of myself, and I have power to lay it down: and I have power to take it up again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
19
19
These words of his led to a fresh division of opinion among the Jews.
19
A dissension rose again among the Jews for these words.
20
20
Many of them said, He must be possessed; he is a madman; why do you listen to him?
20
And many of them said: He hath a devil, and is mad: why hear you him?
21
Alii dicebant: Hæc verba non sunt dæmonium habentis: numquid dæmonium potest cæcorum oculos aperire?
21
While others said, This is not the language of a man who is possessed by a devil. Has a devil power to open blind men’s eyes?
21
Others said: These are not the words of one that hath a devil: Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
22
22
And now the Dedication feast was taking place at Jerusalem, and it was winter;
22
And it was the feast of the dedication at Jerusalem: and it was winter.
23
Et ambulabat Jesus in templo, in porticu Salomonis.
23
and Jesus was walking about in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.
23
And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.
24
Circumdederunt ergo eum Judæi, et dicebant ei: Quousque animam nostram tollis? si tu es Christus, dic nobis palam.
24
So the Jews gathered round him, and said to him, How long wilt thou go on keeping us in suspense? If thou art the Christ, tell us openly.
24
The Jews therefore came round about him, and said to him: How long dost thou hold our souls in suspense? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
25
Respondit eis Jesus: Loquor vobis, et non creditis: opera quæ ego facio in nomine Patris mei, hæc testimonium perhibent de me:
25
Jesus answered them, I have told you, but you will not believe me. All that I do in my Father’s name bears me testimony,
25
Jesus answered them: I speak to you, and you believe not: the works that I do in the name of my Father, they give testimony of me.
26
26
and still you will not believe me; that is because you are no sheep of mine.
26
But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep.
27
Oves meæ vocem meam audiunt, et ego cognosco eas, et sequuntur me:
27
My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
27
My sheep hear my voice: and I know them, and they follow me.
28
28
And I give them everlasting life, so that to all eternity they can never be lost; no one can tear them away from my hand.
28
And I give them life everlasting; and they shall not perish for ever, and no man shall pluck them out of my hand.
29
29
This trust which my Father has committed to me is more precious than all else; no one can tear them away from the hand of my Father.
29
That which my Father hath given me, is greater than all: and no one can snatch them out of the hand of my Father.
30
Ego et Pater unum sumus.
30
My Father and I are one.
30
I and the Father are one.
31
Sustulerunt ergo lapides Judæi, ut lapidarent eum.
31
At this, the Jews once again took up stones, to stone him with.
31
The Jews then took up stones to stone him.
32
Respondit eis Jesus: Multa bona opera ostendi vobis ex Patre meo: propter quod eorum opus me lapidatis?
32
Jesus answered them, My Father has enabled me to do many deeds of mercy in your presence; for which of these are you stoning me?
32
Jesus answered them: Many good works I have shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do you stone me?
33
33
It is not for any deed of mercy we are stoning thee, answered the Jews; it is for blasphemy; it is because thou, who art a man, dost pretend to be God.
33
The Jews answered him: For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34
Respondit eis Jesus: Nonne scriptum est in lege vestra, Quia ego dixi: Dii estis?
34
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I have said, You are gods?
34
Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your law: I said you are gods?
35
35
He gave the title of gods to those who had God’s message sent to them; and we know that the words of scripture have binding force.
35
If he called them gods, to whom the word of God was spoken, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36
quem Pater sanctificavit, et misit in mundum vos dicitis: Quia blasphemas, quia dixi: Filius Dei sum?
36
Why then, what of him whom God has sanctified and sent into the world? Will you call me a blasphemer, because I have told you I am the Son of God?
36
Do you say of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world: Thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God?
37
37
If you find that I do not act like the son of my Father, then put no trust in me;
37
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
38
38
but if I do, then let my actions convince you where I cannot; so you will recognize and learn to believe that the Father is in me, and I in him.
38
But if I do, though you will not believe me, believe the works: that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.
39
39
Thereupon once again they had a mind to seize him; but he escaped from their hands,
39
They sought therefore to take him; and he escaped out of their hands.
40
Et abiit iterum trans Jordanem, in eum locum ubi erat Joannes baptizans primum, et mansit illic;
40
and went back to the other side of Jordan, to the place where John was when he first baptized. There he waited,
40
And he went again beyond the Jordan, into that place where John was baptizing first; and there he abode.
41
41
while many came out to see him. John, they said, never did a miracle,
41
And many resorted to him, and they said: John indeed did no sign.
42
42
but all John told us about this man has proved true. And many found faith in him there.
42
But all things whatsoever John said of this man, were true. And many believed in him.
