1 I AM the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman. |
1 I am the true vine, and it is my Father who tends it. |
2 Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. |
2 The branch that yields no fruit in me, he cuts away; the branch that does yield fruit, he trims clean, so that it may yield more fruit. |
3 Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis. |
3 Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you. |
3 You, through the message I have preached to you, are clean already; |
4 Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest ferre fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis. |
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. |
4 you have only to live on in me, and I will live on in you. The branch that does not live on in the vine can yield no fruit of itself; no more can you, if you do not live on in me. |
5 Ego sum vitis, vos palmites: qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere. |
5 I am the vine; you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. |
5 I am the vine, you are its branches; if a man lives on in me, and I in him, then he will yield abundant fruit; separated from me, you have no power to do anything. |
6 If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. |
6 If a man does not live on in me, he can only be like the branch that is cast off and withers away; such a branch is picked up and thrown into the fire, to burn there. |
7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you. |
7 As long as you live on in me, and my words live on in you, you will be able to make what request you will, and have it granted. |
8 In this is my Father glorified; that you bring forth very much fruit, and become my disciples. |
8 My Father’s name has been glorified, if you yield abundant fruit, and prove yourselves my disciples. |
9 Sicut dilexit me Pater, et ego dilexi vos. Manete in dilectione mea. |
9 As the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love. |
9 I have bestowed my love upon you, just as my Father has bestowed his love upon me; live on, then, in my love. |
10 If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; as I also have kept my Father’s commandments, and do abide in his love. |
10 You will live on in my love, if you keep my commandments, just as it is by keeping my Father’s commandments that I live on in his love. |
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled. |
11 All this I have told you, so that my joy may be yours, and the measure of your joy may be filled up. |
12 This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. |
12 This is my commandment, that you should love one another, as I have loved you. |
13 Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends. |
13 This is the greatest love a man can shew, that he should lay down his life for his friends; |
14 Vos amici mei estis, si feceritis quæ ego præcipio vobis. |
14 You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you. |
14 and you, if you do all that I command you, are my friends. |
15 Jam non dicam vos servos: quia servus nescit quid faciat dominus ejus. Vos autem dixi amicos: quia omnia quæcumque audivi a Patre meo, nota feci vobis. |
15 I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends: because all things whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you. |
15 I do not speak of you any more as my servants; a servant is one who does not understand what his master is about, whereas I have made known to you all that my Father has told me; and so I have called you my friends. |
16 You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. |
16 It was not you that chose me, it was I that chose you. The task I have appointed you is to go out and bear fruit, fruit which will endure; so that every request you make of the Father in my name may be granted you. |
17 Hæc mando vobis: ut diligatis invicem. |
17 These things I command you, that you love one another. |
17 These are the directions I give you, that you should love one another. |
18 Si mundus vos odit, scitote quia me priorem vobis odio habuit. |
18 If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you. |
18 If the world hates you, be sure that it hated me before it learned to hate you. |
19 If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. |
19 If you belonged to the world, the world would know you for its own and love you; it is because you do not belong to the world, because I have singled you out from the midst of the world, that the world hates you. |
20 Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also. |
20 Do not forget what I said to you, No servant can be greater than his master. They will persecute you just as they have persecuted me; they will pay the same attention to your words as to mine. |
21 Sed hæc omnia facient vobis propter nomen meum: quia nesciunt eum qui misit me. |
21 But all these things they will do to you for my name’s sake: because they know not him that sent me. |
21 And they will treat you thus because you bear my name; they have no knowledge of him who sent me. |
22 If I had not come, and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. |
22 If I had not come and given them my message, they would not have been in fault; as it is, their fault can find no excuse. |
23 Qui me odit, et Patrem meum odit. |
23 He that hateth me, hateth my Father also. |
23 To hate me is to hate my Father too. |
24 If I had not done among them the works that no other man hath done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. |
24 If I had not done what no one else ever did in their midst they would not have been in fault; as it is, they have hated, with open eyes, both me and my Father. |
25 But that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: They hated me without cause. |
25 And all this, in fulfilment of the saying which is written in their law, They hated me without cause. |
26 Cum autem venerit Paraclitus, quem ego mittam vobis a Patre, Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit, ille testimonium perhibebit de me; |
26 But when the Paraclete cometh, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, he shall give testimony of me. |
26 Well, when the truth-giving Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, has come to befriend you, he whom I will send to you from the Father’s side, he will bear witness of what I was; |
27 And you shall give testimony, because you are with me from the beginning. |
27 and you too are to be my witnesses, you who from the first have been in my company. |
