1 Hæc locutus sum vobis, ut non scandalizemini. |
1 These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. |
1 I have told you this, so that your faith may not be taken unawares. |
2 They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God. |
2 They will forbid you the synagogue; nay, the time is coming when anyone who puts you to death will claim that he is performing an act of worship to God; |
3 And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me. |
3 such things they will do to you, because they have no knowledge of the Father, or of me. |
4 But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. |
4 And I have told you this, so that when the time comes for it to happen, you may remember that I told you of it. |
5 But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou? |
5 If I did not tell you of it from the first, it was because I was to be still in your company. Now, I am going back to him who sent me. None of you is asking me, Where is it thou art going? |
6 sed quia hæc locutus sum vobis, tristitia implevit cor vestrum. |
6 But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. |
6 so full are your hearts with sorrow at my telling you this. |
7 But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go: for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. |
7 And yet I can say truly that it is better for you I should go away; he who is to befriend you will not come to you unless I do go, but if only I make my way there, I will send him to you. |
8 And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment. |
8 He will come, and it will be for him to prove the world wrong, about sin, and about rightness of heart, and about judging. |
9 De peccato quidem, quia non crediderunt in me. |
9 Of sin: because they believed not in me. |
9 About sin; they have not found belief in me. |
10 And of justice: because I go to the Father; and you shall see me no longer. |
10 About rightness of heart; I am going back to my Father, and you are not to see me any more. |
11 And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged. |
11 About judging; he who rules this world has had sentence passed on him already. |
12 I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now. |
12 I have still much to say to you, but it is beyond your reach as yet. |
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you. |
13 It will be for him, the truth-giving Spirit, when he comes, to guide you into all truth. He will not utter a message of his own; he will utter the message that has been given to him; and he will make plain to you what is still to come. |
14 Ille me clarificabit, quia de meo accipiet, et annuntiabit vobis. |
14 He shall glorify me; because he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it to you. |
14 And he will bring honour to me, because it is from me that he will derive what he makes plain to you. |
15 All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you. |
15 I say that he will derive from me what he makes plain to you, because all that belongs to the Father belongs to me. |
16 Modicum, et jam non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me: quia vado ad Patrem. |
16 A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father. |
16 After a little while, you will see me no longer; and again after a little while you will have sight of me, because I am going back to the Father. |
17 Then some of his disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father? |
17 Upon this, some of his disciples said to one another, What does this mean, that he is saying to us, After a little while, you will see me no longer, and again after a little while you will have sight of me? And then, Because I am going back to my Father? |
18 They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh. |
18 What is this little while he speaks of? they asked. We cannot understand what he means by it. |
19 Cognovit autem Jesus, quia volebant eum interrogare, et dixit eis: De hoc quæritis inter vos quia dixi: Modicum, et non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me. |
19 And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me? |
19 Jesus, knowing that they were eager to question him, said to them, You are wondering among yourselves over what I have been saying, After a little while you will see me no longer, and again after a little while you will have sight of me. |
20 Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. |
20 Believe me when I tell you this, you will weep and lament while the world rejoices; you will be distressed, but your distress shall be turned into joy. |
21 A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. |
21 A woman in childbirth feels distress, because now her time has come; but when she has borne her child, she does not remember the distress any longer, so glad is she that a man has been born into the world. |
22 So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you. |
22 So it is with you, you are distressed now; but one day I will see you again, and then your hearts will be glad; and your gladness will be one which nobody can take away from you. |
23 Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam. Amen, amen dico vobis: si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis. |
23 And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. |
23 When that day comes, you will not need to ask anything of me. Believe me, you have only to make any request of the Father in my name, and he will grant it to you. |
24 Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. |
24 Until now, you have not been making any requests in my name; make them, and they will be granted, to bring you gladness in full measure. |
25 Hæc in proverbiis locutus sum vobis.
25 These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. |
25 I have been telling you this in parables; now comes the hour when I will talk to you in parables no longer, but tell you openly about the Father. |
26 In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you: |
26 At the time I speak of, you will make your requests in my name; and there is no need for me to tell you that I will ask the Father to grant them to you, |
27 ipse enim Pater amat vos, quia vos me amastis, et credidistis, quia ego a Deo exivi. |
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. |
27 because the Father himself is your friend, since you have become my friends, and have learned to believe that I came from God. |
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father. |
28 It was from the Father I came out, when I entered the world, and now I am leaving the world, and going on my way to the Father. |
29 His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. |
29 Hereupon his disciples said to him, Why, now thou art speaking openly enough; this is no parable thou art uttering. |
30 Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God. |
30 Now we can be sure that thou knowest all things, not needing to wait till thou art asked; this gives us faith that thou wast sent by God. |
31 Respondit eis Jesus: Modo creditis? |
31 Jesus answered them: Do you now believe? |
31 You have faith now? Jesus answered. |
32 Behold, the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. |
32 Behold, the time is coming, nay, has already come, when you are to be scattered, each of you taking his own path, and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. |
33 Hæc locutus sum vobis, ut in me pacem habeatis. In mundo pressuram habebitis: sed confidite, ego vici mundum. |
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world. |
33 I have said this to you, so that in me you may find peace. In the world, you will only find tribulation; but take courage, I have overcome the world. |
