Jesus therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life.

Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, quem suscitavit Jesus.

Six days before the paschal feast, Jesus went to Bethany. Bethany was the home of Lazarus, the dead man whom Jesus raised to life.

And they made him a supper there: and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him.

Fecerunt autem ei cœnam ibi, et Martha ministrabat, Lazarus vero unus erat ex discumbentibus cum eo.

And a feast was made for him there, at which Martha was waiting at table, while Lazarus was one of his fellow guests.

Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Maria ergo accepit libram unguenti nardi pistici pretiosi, et unxit pedes Jesu, et extersit pedes ejus capillis suis: et domus impleta est ex odore unguenti.

And now Mary brought in a pound of pure spikenard ointment, which was very precious, and poured it over Jesus’ feet, wiping his feet with her hair; the whole house was scented with the ointment.

Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said:

Dixit ergo unus ex discipulis ejus, Judas Iscariotes, qui erat eum traditurus:

One of his disciples, the same Judas Iscariot who was to betray him, said when he saw it,

Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

Quare hoc unguentum non veniit trecentis denariis, et datum est egenis?

Why should not this ointment have been sold? It would have fetched three hundred silver pieces, and alms might have been given to the poor.

Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein.

Dixit autem hoc, non quia de egenis pertinebat ad eum, sed quia fur erat, et loculos habens, ea quæ mittebantur, portabat.

He said this, not from any concern for the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse, and took what was put into it.

Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.

Dixit ergo Jesus: Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud.

And Jesus said, Let her alone; enough that she should keep it for the day when my body is prepared for burial.

For the poor you have always with you; but me you have not always.

Pauperes enim semper habetis vobiscum: me autem non semper habetis.

You have the poor among you always; I am not always among you.

A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

Cognovit ergo turba multa ex Judæis quia illic est, et venerunt, non propter Jesum tantum, sed ut Lazarum viderent, quem suscitavit a mortuis.

A great number of the Jews heard that he was there and went out there, not only on account of Jesus, but so as to have sight of Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead;

But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also:

Cogitaverunt autem principes sacerdotum ut et Lazarum interficerent:

and the chief priests made a plot against Lazarus’ life too,

Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away, and believed in Jesus.

quia multi propter illum abibant ex Judæis, et credebant in Jesum.

because so many of the Jews, on his account, were beginning to go off and find faith in Jesus.

And on the next day, a great multitude that was come to the festival day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

Next day, a great multitude of those who had come up for the feast, hearing that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem,

Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.

acceperunt ramos palmarum, et processerunt obviam ei, et clamabant: Hosanna, benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini, rex Israël.

took palm branches with them and went out to meet him, crying aloud, Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, blessed is the king of Israel.

And Jesus found a young ass, and sat upon it, as it is written:

Et invenit Jesus asellum, et sedit super eum, sicut scriptum est:

And Jesus took an ass’s foal, and mounted on it; so it is written,
15
Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy king cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.

Noli timere, filia Sion: ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinæ.

Do not be afraid, daughter of Sion; behold, thy king is coming to thee, riding on an ass’s colt.

These things his disciples did not know at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him.

Hæc non cognoverunt discipuli ejus primum: sed quando glorificatus est Jesus, tunc recordati sunt quia hæc erant scripta de eo, et hæc fecerunt ei.

The disciples did not understand all this at the time: only after Jesus had attained his glory did they remember what they had done, and how it fulfilled the words written of him.

The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him, when he called Lazarus out of the grave, and raised him from the dead.

Testimonium ergo perhibebat turba, quæ erat cum eo quando Lazarum vocavit de monumento, et suscitavit eum a mortuis.

There were many who had been with him, when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him to life, and these too bore witness of him.

For which reason also the people came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this miracle.

Propterea et obviam venit ei turba: quia audierunt fecisse hoc signum.

Indeed, that was why the multitude went out to meet him, because they had heard of his performing this miracle.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.

Pharisæi ergo dixerunt ad semetipsos: Videtis quia nihil proficimus? ecce mundus totus post eum abiit.

And the Pharisees said to one another, Do you see how vain are our efforts? Look, the whole world has turned aside to follow him.

Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day.

Erant autem quidam gentiles, ex his qui ascenderant ut adorarent in die festo.

And there were certain Gentiles, among those that had come up to worship at the feast,

These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.

Hi ergo accesserunt ad Philippum, qui erat a Bethsaida Galilææ, et rogabant eum, dicentes: Domine, volumus Jesum videre.

who approached Philip, the man from Bethsaida in Galilee, and made a request of him; Sir, they said, we desire to see Jesus.

Philip cometh, and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

Venit Philippus, et dicit Andreæ; Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Jesu.

Philip came and told Andrew, and together Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

Jesus autem respondit eis, dicens: Venit hora, ut clarificetur Filius hominis.

And Jesus answered them thus, The time has come now for the Son of Man to achieve his glory.
24
Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,
24
Amen, amen dico vobis, nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram, mortuum fuerit,
24
Believe me when I tell you this; a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die,
25
Itself remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.

ipsum solum manet: si autem mortuum fuerit, multum fructum affert. Qui amat animam suam, perdet eam; et qui odit animam suam in hoc mundo, in vitam æternam custodit eam.

or else it remains nothing more than a grain of wheat; but if it dies, then it yields rich fruit. He who loves his life will lose it; he who is an enemy to his own life in this world will keep it, so as to live eternally.

If any man minister to me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.

Si quis mihi ministrat, me sequatur, et ubi sum ego, illic et minister meus erit. Si quis mihi ministraverit, honorificabit eum Pater meus.

If anyone is to be my servant, he must follow my way; so shall my servant too be where I am. If anyone serves me, my Father will do him honour.
27
Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour.

Nunc anima mea turbata est. Et quid dicam? Pater, salvifica me ex hac hora. Sed propterea veni in horam hanc:

And now my soul is distressed. What am I to say? I will say, Father, save me from undergoing this hour of trial; and yet, I have only reached this hour of trial that I might undergo it.

Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

Pater, clarifica nomen tuum. Venit ergo vox de cælo: Et clarificavi, et iterum clarificabo.

Father, make thy name known. And at this, a voice came from heaven, I have made it known, and will yet make it known.

The multitude therefore that stood and heard, said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him.

Turba ergo, quæ stabat, et audierat, dicebat tonitruum esse factum. Alii dicebant: Angelus ei locutus est.

Thereupon the multitude which stood listening declared that it had thundered; but some of them said, An angel has spoken to him.
30
Jesus answered, and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
30
Respondit Jesus, et dixit: Non propter me hæc vox venit, sed propter vos.
30
Jesus answered, It was for your sake, not for mine, that this utterance was made.
31
Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
31
Nunc judicium est mundi: nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras.

Sentence is now being passed on this world; now is the time when the prince of this world is to be cast out.
32
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.

Et ego, si exaltatus fuero a terra, omnia traham ad meipsum.

Yes, if only I am lifted up from the earth, I will attract all men to myself.

(Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)

(Hoc autem dicebat, significans qua morte esset moriturus.)

(In saying this, he prophesied the death he was to die.)

The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

Respondit ei turba: Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in æternum: et quomodo tu dicis: Oportet exaltari Filium hominis? quis est iste Filius hominis?

The multitude answered him, We have been told, out of the law, that Christ is to remain undisturbed for ever; what dost thou mean by saying that the Son of Man must be lifted up? What Son of Man is this?

Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither be goeth.

Dixit ergo eis Jesus: Adhuc modicum, lumen in vobis est. Ambulate dum lucem habetis, ut non vos tenebræ comprehendant; et qui ambulat in tenebris, nescit quo vadat.

And Jesus said to them, The light is among you still, but only for a short time. Finish your journey while you still have the light, for fear darkness should overtake you; he who journeys in darkness cannot tell which way he is going.

Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.

Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis. Hæc locutus est Jesus, et abiit et abscondit se ab eis.

While you still have the light, have faith in the light, that so you may become children of the light. So much Jesus told them, and then went away, and was lost to their view.

And whereas he had done so many miracles before them, they believed not in him:

Cum autem tanta signa fecisset coram eis, non credebant in eum;
37
Such great miracles he did in their presence, and still they did not believe in him;
38
That the saying of Isaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: Lord, who hath believed our hearing? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

ut sermo Isaiæ prophetæ impleretur, quem dixit: Domine, quis credidit auditui nostro? et brachium Domini cui revelatum est?

this was in fulfilment of the words spoken by the prophet Isaias, Lord, is there anyone who has believed our message, to whom the power of God has been made known?

Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again:

Propterea non poterant credere, quia iterum dixit Isaias:

So it was that they could not believe; and indeed, Isaias has said elsewhere:

He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

Excæcavit oculos eorum, et induravit cor eorum ut non videant oculis, et non intelligant corde, et convertantur, et sanem eos.

He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, so that they could not see with those eyes, and understand with that heart, and turn back to me, and win healing from me.

These things said Isaias, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.
41
Hæc dixit Isaias, quando vidit gloriam ejus, et locutus est de eo.

Isaias said this, as one who had seen his glory; it was of him that he spoke.
42
However, many of the chief men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.

Verumtamen et ex principibus multi crediderunt in eum: sed propter pharisæos non confitebantur, ut e synagoga non ejicerentur.

There were, for all that, many of the rulers who had learned to believe in him; but they would not profess it because of the Pharisees, afraid of being forbidden the synagogue.

For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

Dilexerunt enim gloriam hominum magis quam gloriam Dei.

They valued their credit with men higher than their credit with God.

But Jesus cried, and said: He that believeth in me, doth not believe in me, but in him that sent me.

Jesus autem clamavit, et dixit: Qui credit in me, non credit in me, sed in eum qui misit me.

And Jesus cried out, If a man believes in me, it is in him who sent me, not in me, that he believes;
45
And he that seeth me, seeth him that sent me.

Et qui videt me, videt eum qui misit me.

to see me is to see him who sent me.

I am come a light into the world; that whosoever believeth in me, may not remain in darkness.

Ego lux in mundum veni, ut omnis qui credit in me, in tenebris non maneat.

I have come into the world as a light, so that all those who believe in me may continue no longer in darkness.
47
And if any man hear my words, and keep them not, I do not judge him: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

Et si quis audierit verba mea, et non custodierit, ego non judico eum; non enim veni ut judicem mundum, sed ut salvificem mundum.

If a man hears my words, and does not keep true to them, I do not pass sentence on him; I have come to save the world, not to pass sentence on the world.
48
He that despiseth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Qui spernit me et non accipit verba mea, habet qui judicet eum. Sermo quem locutus sum, ille judicabit eum in novissimo die.

The man who makes me of no account, and does not accept my words, has a judge appointed to try him; it is the message I have uttered that will be his judge at the last day.
49
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment what I should say, and what I should speak.

Quia ego ex meipso non sum locutus, sed qui misit me, Pater, ipse mihi mandatum dedit quid dicam et quid loquar.

And this, because it is not on my own authority that I have spoken; it was my Father, who sent me, that commanded me what words I was to say, what message I was to utter.
50
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. The things therefore that I speak, even as the Father said unto me, so do I speak.

Et scio quia mandatum ejus vita æterna est: quæ ergo ego loquor, sicut dixit mihi Pater, sic loquor.

And I know well that what he commands is eternal life; everything then, which I utter, I utter as my Father has bidden me.
