Hæc cum dixisset Jesus, egressus est cum discipulis suis trans torrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus, in quem introivit ipse, et discipuli ejus.

When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.

All this Jesus said, and now, with his disciples, he went out across the Cedron valley. Here there was a garden, into which he and his disciples went.

Sciebat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, locum: quia frequenter Jesus convenerat illuc cum discipulis suis.

And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.

Judas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, et a pontificibus et pharisæis ministros, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis.

Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

There, then, Judas came, accompanied by the guard, and officers sent by the chief priests and Pharisees, with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jesus itaque sciens omnia quæ ventura erant super eum, processit, et dixit eis: Quem quæritis?

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?

So Jesus, knowing well what was to befall him, went out to meet them; Who is it, he asked, you are looking for?

Responderunt ei: Jesum Nazarenum. Dicit eis Jesus: Ego sum. Stabat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, cum ipsis.

They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.

Jesus of Nazareth, they answered; and he told them, I am Jesus of Nazareth. And there was Judas, his betrayer, standing in their company.

Ut ergo dixit eis: Ego sum: abierunt retrorsum, et ceciderunt in terram.

As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground.

When he said to them, I am Jesus of Nazareth, they all shrank back, and fell to the ground.

Iterum ergo interrogavit eos: Quem quæritis? Illi autem dixerunt: Jesum Nazarenum.

Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

So, once more, Jesus asked them, Who is it you are looking for? and when they said, Jesus of Nazareth,

Respondit Jesus: Dixi vobis, quia ego sum: si ergo me quæritis, sinite hos abire.

Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,

he answered, I have told you already that I am Jesus. If I am the man you are looking for, let these others go free.

Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit: Quia quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex eis quemquam.

That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.

Thus he would make good the words he had spoken to them, I have not lost any of those whom thou hast entrusted to me.

Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum: et percussit pontificis servum, et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus.

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.

Dixit ergo Jesus Petro: Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam. Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum?

Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Whereupon Jesus said to Peter, Put thy sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink that cup which my Father himself has appointed for me?

Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, et ligaverunt eum.

Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:

And now the guard, with their captain, and the Jewish officers arrested Jesus and pinioned him.

Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum: erat enim socer Caiphæ, qui erat pontifex anni illius.

And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.

They led him off, in the first instance, to Annas, father-in-law of Caiphas, who held the high priesthood in that year.

Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judæis: Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo.

Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

(It was this Caiphas who had given it as his advice to the Jews, that it was best to put one man to death for the sake of the people.)

Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis.

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

Simon Peter followed Jesus, with another disciple; this disciple was acquainted with the high priest, and went into the high priest’s court with Jesus,

Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariæ: et introduxit Petrum.

But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter.

Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria: Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? Dicit ille: Non sum.

The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man’s disciple? He saith: I am not.

This maid-servant who kept the door asked Peter, Art thou another of this man’s disciples? and he said, Not I.

Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas, quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se: erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se.

Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.

It was cold, and the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, and stood there warming themselves; there Peter stood too, warming himself with the rest.

Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus.

The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

And now the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.

Respondit ei Jesus: Ego palam locutus sum mundo: ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sum nihil.

Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.

Jesus answered, I have spoken openly before the world; my teaching has been given in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews forgather; nothing that I have said was said in secret.

Quid me interrogas? interroga eos qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis: ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego.

Why askest thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said.

Why dost thou question me? Ask those who listened to me what my words were; they know well enough what I said.

Hæc autem cum dixisset, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, dicens: Sic respondes pontifici?

And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?

When he spoke thus, one of the officers, who was standing by, struck Jesus on the cheek; Is this, he said, how thou makest answer to the high priest?

Respondit ei Jesus: Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo: si autem bene, quid me cædis?

Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?

If there was harm in what I said, Jesus answered, tell us what was harmful in it; if not, why dost thou strike me?

Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem.

And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.

Annas, you must know, had sent him on, still bound, to the high priest Caiphas.

Erat autem Simon Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei: Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es? Negavit ille, et dixit: Non sum.

And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.

Meanwhile Simon Peter stood there, and warmed himself. So they asked him, Art thou, too, one of his disciples? And he denied it; Not I, he said.

Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus ejus, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam: Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo?

One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

Why, said one of the high priest’s servants, a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, did I not see thee with him in the garden?

Iterum ergo negavit Petrus: et statim gallus cantavit.

Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.

Whereupon Peter denied again; and immediately the cock crew.

Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium. Erat autem mane: et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed ut manducarent Pascha.

Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor’s hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.

And now they led Jesus away from the house of Caiphas to the governor’s palace. It was morning, and they would not enter the palace themselves; there was the paschal meal to be eaten, and they must not incur defilement.

Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit: Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc?

Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?

And so Pilate went to meet them without; What charge, he asked, do you bring against this man?

Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Si non esset hic malefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum.

They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.

They answered, We would not have given him up to thee, if he had not been a malefactor.

Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: Accipite eum vos, et secundum legem vestram judicate eum. Dixerunt ergo ei Judæi: Nobis non licet interficere quemquam.

Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;

Take him yourselves, Pilate said to them, and judge him according to your own law. Whereupon the Jews said to him, We have no power to put any man to death.

Ut sermo Jesu impleretur, quem dixit, significans qua morte esset moriturus.

That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.

(This was in fulfilment of the words Jesus had spoken when he prophesied what death he was to die.)

Introivit ergo iterum in prætorium Pilatus: et vocavit Jesum, et dixit ei: Tu es rex Judæorum?

Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?

So Pilate went back into the palace, and summoned Jesus; Art thou the king of the Jews? he asked.

Respondit Jesus: A temetipso hoc dicis, an alii dixerunt tibi de me?
34
Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?

Dost thou say this of thy own accord, Jesus answered, or is it what others have told thee of me?

Respondit Pilatus: Numquid ego Judæus sum? gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi: quid fecisti?

Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?

And Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? It is thy own nation, and its chief priests, who have given thee up to me. What offence hast thou committed?

Respondit Jesus: Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo. Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Judæis: nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc.

Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.

My kingdom, said Jesus, does not belong to this world. If my kingdom were one which belonged to this world, my servants would be fighting, to prevent my falling into the hands of the Jews; but no, my kingdom does not take its origin here.

Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: Ergo rex es tu? Respondit Jesus: Tu dicis quia rex sum ego. Ego in hoc natus sum, et ad hoc veni in mundum, ut testimonium perhibeam veritati: omnis qui est ex veritate, audit vocem meam.

Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.

Thou art a king, then? Pilate asked. And Jesus answered, It is thy own lips that have called me a king. What I was born for, what I came into the world for, is to bear witness of the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth, listens to my voice.

Dicit ei Pilatus: Quid est veritas? Et cum hoc dixisset, iterum exivit ad Judæos, et dicit eis: Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.

Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him.

Pilate said to him, What is truth? And with that he went back to the Jews again, and told them, I can find no fault in him.

Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha: vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Judæorum?

But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?
39
You have a custom of demanding that I should release one prisoner at paschal time; would you have me release the king of the Jews?

Clamaverunt ergo rursum omnes, dicentes: Non hunc, sed Barabbam. Erat autem Barabbas latro.

Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Whereupon they all made a fresh outcry; Barabbas, they said, not this man. Barabbas was a robber.
