At the beginning of time the Word already was; and God had the Word abiding with him, and the Word was God.

In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He abode, at the beginning of time, with God.

Hoc erat in principio apud Deum.

The same was in the beginning with God.

It was through him that all things came into being, and without him came nothing that has come to be.

In him there was life, and that life was the light of men.

And the light shines in darkness, a darkness which was not able to master it.

A man appeared, sent from God, whose name was John.

He came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, so that through him all men might learn to believe.

Hic venit in testimonium ut testimonium perhiberet de lumine, ut omnes crederent per illum.

This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.

He was not the Light; he was sent to bear witness to the light.

He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.

There is one who enlightens every soul born into the world; he was the true Light.

Erat lux vera, quæ illuminat omnem hominem venientem in hunc mundum.

That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.

He, through whom the world was made, was in the world, and the world treated him as a stranger.

In mundo erat, et mundus per ipsum factus est, et mundus eum non cognovit.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

He came to what was his own, and they who were his own gave him no welcome.

In propria venit, et sui eum non receperunt.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But all those who did welcome him, he empowered to become the children of God, all those who believe in his name;

Quotquot autem receperunt eum, dedit eis potestatem filios Dei fieri, his qui credunt in nomine ejus:

But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.

their birth came, not from human stock, not from nature’s will or man’s, but from God.

qui non ex sanguinibus, neque ex voluntate carnis, neque ex voluntate viri, sed ex Deo nati sunt.

Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word was made flesh, and came to dwell among us; and we had sight of his glory, glory such as belongs to the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth.

Et Verbum caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis: et vidimus gloriam ejus, gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre plenum gratiæ et veritatis.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

We have John’s witness to him; I told you, cried John, there was one coming after me who takes rank before me; he was when I was not.

Joannes testimonium perhibet de ipso, et clamat dicens: Hic erat quem dixi: Qui post me venturus est, ante me factus est: quia prior me erat.

John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.

We have all received something out of his abundance, grace answering to grace.

Et de plenitudine ejus nos omnes accepimus, et gratiam pro gratia:

And of his fulness we all have received, and grace for grace.

Through Moses the law was given to us; through Jesus Christ grace came to us, and truth.

For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man has ever seen God; but now his only-begotten Son, who abides in the bosom of the Father, has himself become our interpreter.

No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

This, then, was the testimony which John bore, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou?

Et hoc est testimonium Joannis, quando miserunt Judæi ab Jerosolymis sacerdotes et Levitas ad eum ut interrogarent eum: Tu quis es?

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?

He admitted the truth, without concealment, admitted that he was not the Christ.

Et confessus est, et non negavit, et confessus est: Quia non sum ego Christus.

And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.

What then, they asked him, art thou Elias? Not Elias, he said. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

Et interrogaverunt eum: Quid ergo? Elias es tu? Et dixit: Non sum. Propheta es tu? Et respondit: Non.

And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.

So they said, Tell us who thou art, that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what account dost thou give of thyself?

Dixerunt ergo ei: Quis es ut responsum demus his qui miserunt nos? quid dicis de teipso?

They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?

And he told them, I am what the prophet Isaias spoke of, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Straighten out the way of the Lord.

Ait: Ego vox clamantis in deserto: Dirigite viam Domini, sicut dixit Isaias propheta.

He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.

The Pharisees (for they were Pharisees who had come on this errand)

Et qui missi fuerant, erant ex pharisæis.

And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.

asked him, Why dost thou baptize, then, if thou thyself art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

Et interrogaverunt eum, et dixerunt ei: Quid ergo baptizas, si tu non es Christus, neque Elias, neque propheta?

And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

John answered them, I am baptizing you with water; but there is one standing in your midst of whom you know nothing;

Respondit eis Joannes, dicens: Ego baptizo in aqua: medius autem vestrum stetit, quem vos nescitis.

John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.

he it is, who, though he comes after me, takes rank before me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his shoes.

Ipse est qui post me venturus est, qui ante me factus est: cujus ego non sum dignus ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti.

The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.

All this happened in Bethany that is beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Next day, John saw Jesus coming towards him; and he said, Look, this is the Lamb of God; look, this is he who takes away the sin of the world.

Altera die vidit Joannes Jesum venientem ad se, et ait: Ecce agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccatum mundi.

The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.

It is of him that I said, One is coming after me who takes rank before me; he was when I was not.

This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.

I myself did not know who he was, although the very reason why I have come, with my baptism of water, is to make him known to Israel.

et ego nesciebam eum, sed ut manifestetur in Israël, propterea veni ego in aqua baptizans.

And I knew him not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

John also bore witness thus, I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and resting upon him.

Et testimonium perhibuit Joannes, dicens: Quia vidi Spiritum descendentem quasi columbam de cælo, et mansit super eum.

And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him.

Till then, I did not know him; but then I remembered what I had been told by the God who sent me to baptize with water. He told me, The man who will baptize with the Holy Spirit is the man on whom thou wilt see the Spirit come down and rest.

Et ego nesciebam eum: sed qui misit me baptizare in aqua, ille mihi dixit: Super quem videris Spiritum descendentem, et manentem super eum, hic est qui baptizat in Spiritu Sancto.

And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

Now I have seen him, and have borne my witness that this is the Son of God.

And I saw, and I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God.

The next day after this, John was standing there again, with two of his disciples;

and, watching Jesus as he walked by, he said, Look, this is the Lamb of God.

Et respiciens Jesum ambulantem, dicit: Ecce agnus Dei.

And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God.

The two disciples heard him say it, and they followed Jesus.

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Turning, and seeing them follow him, Jesus asked, What would you have of me? Rabbi, they said (a word which means Master), where dost thou live?

Conversus autem Jesus, et videns eos sequentes se, dicit eis: Quid quæritis? Qui dixerunt ei: Rabbi (quod dicitur interpretatum Magister), ubi habitas?

And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

He said to them, Come and see; so they went and saw where he lived, and they stayed with him all the rest of the day, from about the tenth hour onwards.

Dicit eis: Venite et videte. Venerunt, et viderunt ubi maneret, et apud eum manserunt die illo: hora autem erat quasi decima.

He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two who had heard what John said, and followed him, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.

Erat autem Andreas, frater Simonis Petri, unus ex duobus qui audierant a Joanne, et secuti fuerant eum.

And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him.

He, first of all, found his own brother Simon, and told him, We have discovered the Messias (which means, the Christ),

Invenit hic primum fratrem suum Simonem, et dicit ei: Invenimus Messiam (quod est interpretatum Christus).

He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

and brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him closely, and said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona; thou shalt be called Cephas (which means the same as Peter).

Et adduxit eum ad Jesum. Intuitus autem eum Jesus, dixit: Tu es Simon, filius Jona; tu vocaberis Cephas, quod interpretatur Petrus.

And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.

He was to remove into Galilee next day; and now he found Philip; to him Jesus said, Follow me.

In crastinum voluit exire in Galilæam, et invenit Philippum. Et dicit ei Jesus: Sequere me.

On the following day, he would go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip. And Jesus saith to him: Follow me.

This Philip came from Bethsaida, a fellow townsman of Andrew and Peter.

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

And Philip found Nathanael, and told him, We have discovered who it was Moses wrote of in his law, and the prophets too; it is Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.

Invenit Philippus Nathanaël, et dicit ei: Quem scripsit Moyses in lege, et prophetæ, invenimus Jesum filium Joseph a Nazareth.

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.

When Nathanael asked him, Can anything that is good come from Nazareth? Philip said, Come and see.

Et dixit ei Nathanaël: A Nazareth potest aliquid boni esse? Dicit ei Philippus: Veni et vide.

And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, and said of him, Here comes one who belongs to the true Israel; there is no falsehood in him.

Vidit Jesus Nathanaël venientem ad se, et dicit de eo: Ecce vere Israëlita, in quo dolus non est.

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.

How dost thou know me? Nathanael asked; and Jesus answered him, I saw thee when thou wast under the fig-tree, before Philip called thee.

Dicit ei Nathanaël: Unde me nosti? Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Priusquam te Philippus vocavit, cum esses sub ficu, vidi te.

Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered, and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Then Nathanael answered him, Thou, Master, art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.

Respondit ei Nathanaël, et ait: Rabbi, tu es Filius Dei, tu es rex Israël.

Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

Jesus answered, What, believe because I told thee that I saw thee under the fig-tree? Thou shalt see greater things than that.

Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Quia dixi tibi: Vidi te sub ficu, credis; majus his videbis.

Jesus answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.

And he said to him, Believe me when I tell you this; you will see heaven opening, and the angels of God going up and coming down upon the Son of Man.

Et dicit ei: Amen, amen dico vobis, videbitis cælum apertum, et angelos Dei ascendentes, et descendentes supra Filium hominis.

And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
