Post hæc abiit Jesus trans mare Galilææ, quod est Tiberiadis:

After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.

After this, Jesus retired across the sea of Galilee, or Tiberias,

et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa quæ faciebat super his qui infirmabantur.

And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Subiit ergo in montem Jesus et ibi sedebat cum discipulis suis.

Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.

It was nearly the time of the Jews’ great feast, the paschal feast.

Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Jesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum: Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi?

When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

And now, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude had gathered round him, Jesus said to Philip, Whence are we to buy bread for these folk to eat?

Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum: ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.

And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do.

In saying this, he was putting him to the test; he himself knew well enough what he meant to do.

Respondit ei Philippus: Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat.

Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.

Philip answered him, Two hundred silver pieces would not buy enough bread for them, even to give each a little.

Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.

Then Jesus said, Make the men sit down. There was no lack of grass where they were; so the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

Accepit ergo Jesus panes: et cum gratias egisset, distribuit discumbentibus: similiter et ex piscibus quantum volebant.

And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would.

And Jesus took the loaves, and gave thanks, and distributed them to the company, and a share of the fishes too, as much as they had a mind for.

Ut autem impleti sunt, dixit discipulis suis: Colligite quæ superaverunt fragmenta, ne pereant.

And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.

Then, when they had all had enough, he told his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing may be wasted.

Collegerunt ergo, et impleverunt duodecim cophinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordeaceis, quæ superfuerunt his qui manducaverant.

They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten.

And when they gathered them up, they filled twelve baskets with the broken pieces left over by those who had eaten.

Illi ergo homines cum vidissent quod Jesus fecerat signum, dicebant: Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum.

Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world.

When they saw the miracle Jesus had done, these men began to say, Beyond doubt, this is the prophet who is to come into the world.

Jesus ergo cum cognovisset quia venturi essent ut raperent eum, et facerent eum regem, fugit iterum in montem ipse solus.

Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.

Knowing, then, that they meant to come and carry him off, so as to make a king of him, Jesus once again withdrew on to the hill-side all alone.

Ut autem sero factum est, descenderunt discipuli ejus ad mare.

And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea.

His disciples, when evening came on, went down to the lake,

Et cum ascendissent navim, venerunt trans mare in Capharnaum: et tenebræ jam factæ erant et non venerat ad eos Jesus.

And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum; and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come unto them.

and there, embarking on the boat, they began to cross the water to Capharnaum. Darkness had fallen, and Jesus had not yet come back to them.

Mare autem, vento magno flante, exsurgebat.

And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.

Meanwhile there was a strong wind blowing, and the sea was beginning to grow rough.

Cum remigassent ergo quasi stadia viginti quinque aut triginta, vident Jesum ambulantem supra mare, et proximum navi fieri, et timuerunt.

When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, and they were afraid.

And now they had rowed some twenty-five or thirty furlongs, when they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and already drawing near to the boat. They were terrified:
20
Ille autem dicit eis: Ego sum, nolite timere.
20
But he saith to them: It is I; be not afraid.
20
but he said to them, It is myself; do not be afraid.
21
Voluerunt ergo accipere eum in navim et statim navis fuit ad terram, in quam ibant.
21
They were willing therefore to take him into the ship; and presently the ship was at the land to which they were going.

Then they took him on board willingly enough; and all at once their boat reached the land they were making for.
22
Altera die, turba, quæ stabat trans mare, vidit quia navicula alia non erat ibi nisi una, et quia non introisset cum discipulis suis Jesus in navim, sed soli discipuli ejus abiissent:

The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there but one, and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone.

Next morning, the multitude was still waiting on the opposite shore. They had seen that there was only one boat there, and that Jesus did not embark with his disciples on this boat, but left his disciples to go back alone.

aliæ vero supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade juxta locum ubi manducaverunt panem, gratias agente Domino.

But other ships came in from Tiberias; nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks.

But now, since other boats from Tiberias had put in near the place where they ate the loaves when the Lord gave thanks over them,

Cum ergo vidisset turba quia Jesus non esset ibi, neque discipuli ejus, ascenderunt in naviculas, et venerunt Capharnaum quærentes Jesum.

When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping, and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus.

the multitude, finding neither Jesus nor his disciples there, embarked on these boats in their turn, and went back to Capharnaum to look for Jesus.

Et cum invenissent eum trans mare, dixerunt ei: Rabbi, quando huc venisti?
25
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

And when they found that he had crossed the lake, they asked him, Master, when didst thou make thy way here?

Respondit eis Jesus, et dixit: Amen, amen dico vobis: quæritis me non quia vidistis signa, sed quia manducastis ex panibus et saturati estis.

Jesus answered them, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

Jesus answered them, Believe me, if you are looking for me now, it is not because of the miracles you have seen; it is because you were fed with the loaves, and had your fill.

Operamini non cibum, qui perit, sed qui permanet in vitam æternam, quem Filius hominis dabit vobis. Hunc enim Pater signavit Deus.

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.

You should not work to earn food which perishes in the using. Work to earn food which affords, continually, eternal life, such food as the Son of Man will give you; God, the Father, has authorized him.

Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Quid faciemus ut operemur opera Dei?

They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?
28
What shall we do, then, they asked him, so as to work in God’s service?
29
Respondit Jesus, et dixit eis: Hoc est opus Dei, ut credatis in eum quem misit ille.
29
Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.
29
Jesus answered them, This is the service God asks of you, to believe in the Man whom he has sent.
30
Dixerunt ergo ei: Quod ergo tu facis signum ut videamus et credamus tibi? quid operaris?
30
They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew, that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work?

So they said to him, Why then, what miracle canst thou do? We must see it before we trust thee; what canst thou effect?

Patres nostri manducaverunt manna in deserto, sicut scriptum est: Panem de cælo dedit eis manducare.

Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as the scripture says, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.

Dixit ergo eis Jesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: non Moyses dedit vobis panem de cælo, sed Pater meus dat vobis panem de cælo verum.

Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Jesus said to them, Believe me when I tell you this; the bread that comes from heaven is not what Moses gave you. The real bread from heaven is given only by my Father.

Panis enim Dei est, qui de cælo descendit, et dat vitam mundo.

For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world.

God’s gift of bread comes down from heaven and gives life to the whole world.

Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Domine, semper da nobis panem hunc.

They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread.

Then, Lord, they said, give us this bread all the while.

Dixit autem eis Jesus: Ego sum panis vitæ: qui venit ad me, non esuriet, et qui credit in me, non sitiet umquam.

And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.

But Jesus told them, It is I who am the bread of life; he who comes to me will never be hungry, he who has faith in me will never know thirst.

Sed dixi vobis quia et vidistis me, et non creditis.
36
But I said unto you, that you also have seen me, and you believe not.
36
(But you, as I have told you, though you have seen me, do not believe in me.)

Omne quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet: et eum qui venit ad me, non ejiciam foras:

All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.

All that the Father has entrusted to me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will never cast out.

quia descendi de cælo, non ut faciam voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me.

Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

It is the will of him who sent me, not my own will, that I have come down from heaven to do;
39
Hæc est autem voluntas ejus qui misit me, Patris: ut omne quod dedit mihi, non perdam ex eo, sed resuscitem illud in novissimo die.

Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day.

and he who sent me would have me keep without loss, and raise up at the last day, all he has entrusted to me.
40
Hæc est autem voluntas Patris mei, qui misit me: ut omnis qui videt Filium et credit in eum, habeat vitam æternam, et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.
40
And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day.

Yes, this is the will of him who sent me, that all those who believe in the Son when they see him should enjoy eternal life; I am to raise them up at the last day.

Murmurabant ergo Judæi de illo, quia dixisset: Ego sum panis vivus, qui de cælo descendi,

The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.

The Jews were by now complaining of his saying, I am myself the bread which has come down from heaven.
42
et dicebant: Nonne hic est Jesus filius Joseph, cujus nos novimus patrem et matrem? quomodo ergo dicit hic: Quia de cælo descendi?

And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he, I came down from heaven?

Is not this Jesus, they said, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother are well known to us? What does he mean by saying, I have come down from heaven?

Respondit ergo Jesus, et dixit eis: Nolite murmurare in invicem:

Jesus therefore answered, and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.

Jesus answered them, Do not whisper thus to one another.

nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up in the last day.

Nobody can come to me without being attracted towards me by the Father who sent me, so that I can raise him up at the last day.
45
Est scriptum in prophetis: Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei. Omnis qui audivit a Patre, et didicit, venit ad me.

It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me.

It is written in the book of the prophets, And they shall all have the Lord for their teacher; everyone who listens to the Father and learns, comes to me.

Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem.

Not that any man hath seen the Father; but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father.

(Not that anyone has seen the Father, except him who comes from God; he alone has seen the Father.)

Amen, amen dico vobis: qui credit in me, habet vitam æternam.

Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life.

Believe me when I tell you this; the man who has faith in me enjoys eternal life.

If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world.

If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live for ever. And now, what is this bread which I am to give? It is my flesh, given for the life of the world.

Litigabant ergo Judæi ad invicem, dicentes: Quomodo potest hic nobis carnem suam dare ad manducandum?

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Then the Jews fell to disputing with one another, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Dixit ergo eis Jesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: nisi manducaveritis carnem Filii hominis, et biberitis ejus sanguinem, non habebitis vitam in vobis.

Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.

Whereupon Jesus said to them, Believe me when I tell you this; you can have no life in yourselves, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood.

Qui manducat meam carnem, et bibit meum sanguinem, habet vitam æternam: et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

The man who eats my flesh and drinks my blood enjoys eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Caro enim mea vere est cibus: et sanguis meus, vere est potus;

For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him.

As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.

As I live because of the Father, the living Father who has sent me, so he who eats me will live, in his turn, because of me.

Hic est panis qui de cælo descendit. Non sicut manducaverunt patres vestri manna, et mortui sunt. Qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in æternum.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.

Such is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not as it was with your fathers, who ate manna and died none the less; the man who eats this bread will live eternally.

Hæc dixit in synagoga docens, in Capharnaum.

These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.

Multi ergo audientes ex discipulis ejus, dixerunt: Durus est hic sermo, et quis potest eum audire?

Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard, and who can hear it?

And there were many of his disciples who said, when they heard it, This is strange talk, who can be expected to listen to it?

Sciens autem Jesus apud semetipsum quia murmurarent de hoc discipuli ejus, dixit eis: Hoc vos scandalizat?

But Jesus, knowing in himself, that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you?

But Jesus, inwardly aware that his disciples were complaining over it, said to them, Does this try your faith?

si ergo videritis Filium hominis ascendentem ubi erat prius?

If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

What will you make of it, if you see the Son of Man ascending to the place where he was before?

Spiritus est qui vivificat: caro non prodest quidquam: verba quæ ego locutus sum vobis, spiritus et vita sunt.

It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you, are spirit and life.

Only the spirit gives life; the flesh is of no avail; and the words I have been speaking to you are spirit, and life.

Sed sunt quidam ex vobis qui non credunt. Sciebat enim ab initio Jesus qui essent non credentes, et quis traditurus esset eum.

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe, and who he was, that would betray him.

But there are some, even among you, who do not believe. Jesus knew from the first which were those who did not believe, and which of them was to betray him.

Et dicebat: Propterea dixi vobis, quia nemo potest venire ad me, nisi fuerit ei datum a Patre meo.

And he said: Therefore did I say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father.

And he went on to say, That is what I meant when I told you that nobody can come to me unless he has received the gift from my Father.

Ex hoc multi discipulorum ejus abierunt retro: et jam non cum illo ambulabant.

After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more with him.

Dixit ergo Jesus ad duodecim: Numquid et vos vultis abire?

Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?

Whereupon Jesus said to the twelve, Would you, too, go away?

Respondit ergo ei Simon Petrus: Domine, ad quem ibimus? verba vitæ æternæ habes:

And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom should we go? Thy words are the words of eternal life;

et nos credidimus, et cognovimus quia tu es Christus Filius Dei.

And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

we have learned to believe, and are assured that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

Respondit eis Jesus: Nonne ego vos duodecim elegi: et ex vobis unus diabolus est?

Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve; and one of you is a devil?

Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen all twelve of you? And one of you is a devil.

Dicebat autem Judam Simonis Iscariotem: hic enim erat traditurus eum, cum esset unus ex duodecim.

Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.

He was speaking of Judas son of Simon, the Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, and was to betray him.
