1
Et præteriens Jesus vidit hominem cæcum a nativitate:
1
And Jesus passing by, saw a man, who was blind from his birth.
1
And Jesus saw, as he passed on his way, a man who had been blind from his birth.
2
2
And his disciples asked him: Rabbi, who hath sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?
2
Whereupon his disciples asked him, Master, was this man guilty of sin, or was it his parents, that he should have been born blind?
3
3
Jesus answered: Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
3
Neither he nor his parents were guilty, Jesus answered; it was so that God’s action might declare itself in him.
4
Me oportet operari opera ejus qui misit me, donec dies est: venit nox, quando nemo potest operari:
4
I must work the works of him that sent me, whilst it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
4
While daylight lasts, I must work in the service of him who sent me; the night is coming, when there is no working any more.
5
quamdiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.
5
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
5
As long as I am in the world, I am the world’s light.
6
6
When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and spread the clay upon his eyes,
6
With that, he spat on the ground, and made clay with the spittle; then he spread the clay on the man’s eyes,
7
et dixit ei: Vade, lava in natatoria Siloë (quod interpretatur Missus). Abiit ergo, et lavit, et venit videns.
7
And said to him: Go, wash in the pool of Siloe, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore, and washed, and he came seeing.
7
and said to him, Away with thee, and wash in the pool of Siloe (a word which means, Sent out). So he went and washed there, and came back with his sight restored.
8
8
The neighbours therefore, and they who had seen him before that he was a beggar, said: Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said: This is he.
8
And now the neighbours, and those who had been accustomed to see him begging, began to say, Is not this the man who used to sit here and beg? Some said, This is the man;
9
Alii autem: Nequaquam, sed similis est ei. Ille vero dicebat: Quia ego sum.
9
But others said: No, but he is like him. But he said: I am he.
9
and others, No, but he looks like him. And he told them, Yes, I am the man.
10
Dicebant ergo ei: Quomodo aperti sunt tibi oculi?
10
They said therefore to him: How were thy eyes opened?
10
How is it, then, they asked him, that thy eyes have been opened?
11
11
He answered: That man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me: Go to the pool of Siloe, and wash. And I went, I washed, and I see.
11
He answered, A man called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes with it, and said to me, Away with thee to the pool of Siloe and wash there. So I went there, and washed, and recovered my sight.
12
Et dixerunt ei: Ubi est ille? Ait: Nescio.
12
And they said to him: Where is he? He saith: I know not.
12
Where is he? they asked; and he said, I cannot tell.
13
Adducunt eum ad pharisæos, qui cæcus fuerat.
13
They bring him that had been blind to the Pharisees.
13
And they brought him before the Pharisees, this man who had once been blind.
14
14
Now it was the sabbath, when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
14
It was a sabbath day, you must know, when Jesus made clay and opened his eyes.
15
Iterum ergo interrogabant eum pharisæi quomodo vidisset.
15
Again therefore the Pharisees asked him, how he had received his sight. But he said to them: He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and I see.
15
And so the Pharisees in their turn asked him how he had recovered his sight. Why, he said, he put clay on my eyes; and then I washed, and now I can see.
16
16
Some therefore of the Pharisees said: This man is not of God, who keepeth not the sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
16
Whereupon some of the Pharisees said, This man can be no messenger from God; he does not observe the sabbath. Others asked, How can a man do miracles like this, and be a sinner? Thus there was a division of opinion among them.
17
17
They say therefore to the blind man again: What sayest thou of him that hath opened thy eyes? And he said: He is a prophet.
17
And now they questioned the blind man again, What account dost thou give of him, that he should thus have opened thy eyes? Why, he said, he must be a prophet.
18
18
The Jews then did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,
18
The Jews must send for the parents of the man who had recovered his sight, before they would believe his story that he had been blind, and that he had had his sight restored to him.
19
19
And asked them, saying: Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then doth he now see?
19
And they questioned them, Is this your son, who, you say, was born blind? How comes it, then, that he is now able to see?
20
20
His parents answered them, and said: We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
20
His parents answered them, We can tell you that this is our son, and that he was blind when he was born;
21
21
But how he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: ask himself: he is of age, let him speak for himself.
21
we cannot tell how he is able to see now; we have no means of knowing who opened his eyes for him. Ask the man himself; he is of age; let him tell you his own story.
22
22
These things his parents said, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had already agreed among themselves, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
22
It was fear of the Jews that made his parents talk in this way; the Jews had by now come to an agreement that anyone who acknowledged Jesus as the Christ should be forbidden the synagogue;
23
Propterea parentes ejus dixerunt: Quia ætatem habet, ipsum interrogate.
23
Therefore did his parents say: He is of age, ask himself.
23
that was why his parents said, He is of age, ask him himself.
24
24
They therefore called the man again that had been blind, and said to him: Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.
24
So once more they summoned the man who had been blind. Give God the praise, they said; this man, to our knowledge, is a sinner.
25
Dixit ergo eis ille: Si peccator est, nescio; unum scio, quia cæcus cum essem, modo video.
25
He said therefore to them: If he be a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.
25
Sinner or not, said the other, I cannot tell; all I know is that once I was blind, and now I can see.
26
Dixerunt ergo illi: Quid fecit tibi? quomodo aperuit tibi oculos?
26
They said then to him: What did he to thee? How did he open thy eyes?
26
Then they asked him over again, What was it he did to thee? By what means did he open thy eyes?
27
27
He answered them: I have told you already, and you have heard: why would you hear it again? will you also become his disciples?
27
And he answered them, I have told you already, and you would not listen to me. Why must you hear it over again? Would you too become his disciples?
28
Maledixerunt ergo ei, et dixerunt: Tu discipulus illius sis: nos autem Moysi discipuli sumus.
28
They reviled him therefore, and said: Be thou his disciple; but we are the disciples of Moses.
28
Upon this, they covered him with abuse; Keep his discipleship for thyself, we are disciples of Moses.
29
29
We know that God spoke to Moses: but as to this man, we know not from whence he is.
29
We know for certain that God spoke to Moses; we know nothing of this man, or whence he comes.
30
30
The man answered, and said to them: Why, herein is a wonderful thing, that you know not from whence he is, and he hath opened my eyes.
30
Why, the man answered, here is matter for astonishment; here is a man that comes you cannot tell whence, and he has opened my eyes.
31
31
Now we know that God doth not hear sinners: but if a man be a server of God, and doth his will, him he heareth.
31
And yet we know for certain that God does not answer the prayers of sinners, it is only when a man is devout and does his will, that his prayer is answered.
32
A sæculo non est auditum quia quis aperuit oculos cæci nati.
32
From the beginning of the world it hath not been heard, that any man hath opened the eyes of one born blind.
32
That a man should open the eyes of one born blind is something unheard of since the world began.
33
Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facere quidquam.
33
Unless this man were of God, he could not do any thing.
33
No, if this man did not come from God, he would have no powers at all.
34
34
They answered, and said to him: Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
34
What, they answered, are we to have lessons from thee, all steeped in sin from thy birth? And they cast him out from their presence.
35
Audivit Jesus quia ejecerunt eum foras: et cum invenisset eum, dixit ei: Tu credis in Filium Dei?
35
Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said to him: Dost thou believe in the Son of God?
35
When Jesus heard that they had so cast him out, he went to find him, and asked him, Dost thou believe in the Son of God?
36
36
He answered, and said: Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?
36
Tell me who he is, Lord, he answered, so that I can believe in him.
37
37
And Jesus said to him: Thou hast both seen him; and it is he that talketh with thee.
37
He is one whom thou hast seen, Jesus told him. It is he who is speaking to thee.
38
At ille ait: Credo, Domine. Et procidens adoravit eum.
38
And he said: I believe, Lord. And falling down, he adored him.
38
Then he said, I do believe, Lord, and fell down to worship him.
39
39
And Jesus said: For judgment I am come into this world; that they who see not, may see; and they who see, may become blind.
39
Hereupon Jesus said, I have come into this world so that a sentence may fall upon it, that those who are blind should see, and those who see should become blind.
40
40
And some of the Pharisees, who were with him, heard: and they said unto him: Are we also blind?
40
Some of the Pharisees heard this, such as were in his company, and they asked him, Are we blind too?
41
Dixit eis Jesus: Si cæci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. Nunc vero dicitis, Quia videmus: peccatum vestrum manet.
41
Jesus said to them: If you were blind, you should not have sin: but now you say: We see. Your sin remaineth.
41
If you were blind, Jesus told them, you would not be guilty. It is because you protest, We can see clearly, that you cannot be rid of your guilt.
