Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
And it came to pass after this that David defeated the Philistines, and brought them down, and David took the bridle of tribute out of the hand of the Philistines.
1
After this, David defeated the Philistines and brought their pride low; wrested from them, too, their claim to exact tribute.
2
2
And he defeated Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the earth: and he measured with two lines, one to put to death, and one to save alive: and Moab was made to serve David under tribute.
2
He also defeated the Moabites, and measured out their fate to them by lot, bringing them down to the dust; life and death were the two lots he measured out to them; and Moab became tributary to king David.
3
3
David defeated also Adarezer the son of Rohob king of Soba, when he went to extend his dominion over the river Euphrates.
3
He defeated Adarezer, son of Rohob, king of Soba, that had marched out to extend his domains beyond the river Euphrates;
4
4
And David took from him a thousand and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen, and houghed all the chariot horses: and only reserved of them for one hundred chariots.
4
seventeen hundred horsemen he took alive, and twenty thousand that fought on foot, and cut the hamstrings of the horses, but kept a hundred teams for himself.
5
5
And the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Adarezer the king of Soba: and David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.
5
When the Syrians of Damascus came out to reinforce Adarezer, king of Soba, David routed their army of twenty-two thousand,
6
6
And David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and Syria served David under tribute: and the Lord preserved David in all his enterprises, whithersoever he went.
6
and put a garrison of his own in the Damascus region of Syria, which became tributary to him. Undertake what enterprise he would, ever the Lord protected him.
7
Et tulit David arma aurea quæ habebant servi Adarezer, et detulit ea in Jerusalem.
7
And David took the arms of gold, which the servants of Adarezer wore, and brought them to Jerusalem.
7
All the golden trappings, which Adarezer’s men wore, David carried off and brought to Jerusalem;
8
8
And out of Bete, and out of Beroth, cities of Adarezer, king David took an exceeding great quantity of brass.
8
from Bete, too, and Beroth, cities in Adarezer’s dominion, he carried away great stores of bronze.
9
9
And Thou the king of Emath heard that David had defeated all the forces of Adarezer.
9
When the news of this victory over Adarezer’s forces reached Thou, king of Emath,
10
10
And Thou sent Joram his son to king David, to salute him, and to congratulate with him, and to return him thanks: because he had fought against Adarezer, and had defeated him. For Thou was an enemy to Adarezer, and in his hand were vessels of gold, and vessels of silver, and vessels of brass:
10
he sent his son Joram to greet David and wish him well, out of gratitude for the conquest and rout of Adarezer, who was Thou’s enemy; and this Joram brought presents with him, of gold and silver and bronze,
11
11
And king David dedicated them to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all the nations, which he had subdued:
11
which king David consecrated to the Lord, together with all the silver and gold he had set apart from the spoils of the conquered nations,
12
12
Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalec, and of the spoils of Adarezer the son of Rohob king of Soba.
12
Syria, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, Amalec, and now Adarezer, son of Rohob, king of Soba.
13
Fecit quoque sibi David nomen cum reverteretur capta Syria in valle Salinarum, cæsis decem et octo millibus:
13
David also made himself a name, when he returned after taking Syria in the valley of the saltpits, killing eighteen thousand:
13
David won renown, too, on his way back from the conquest of Syria, by defeating eighteen thousand men in the Valley of the Salt-pits;
14
14
And he put guards in Edom, and placed there a garrison: and all Edom was made to serve David: and the Lord preserved David in all enterprises he went about.
14
after this he kept troops in Edom to garrison it, and the whole of Edom became subject to him. And still the Lord protected David in all his enterprises.
15
Et regnavit David super omnem Israël: faciebat quoque David judicium et justitiam omni populo suo.
15
And David reigned over all Israel: and David did judgment and justice to all his people.
15
The whole of Israel was under his rule, and to all his people he administered justice and gave award.
16
Joab autem filius Sarviæ erat super exercitum: porro Josaphat filius Ahilud erat a commentariis:
16
And Joab the son of Sarvia was over the army: and Josaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:
16
His army was commanded by Joab, son of Sarvia, and Josaphat, son of Ahilud, kept the records;
17
et Sadoc filius Achitob, et Achimelech filius Abiathar, erant sacerdotes: et Saraias, scriba:
17
And Sadoc the son of Achitob, and Achimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests: and Saraias was the scribe:
17
the priests were Sadoc, son of Achitob, and Achimelech, son of Abiathar, and Saraias was secretary;
18
18
And Banaias the son of Joiada was over the Cerethi and Phelethi: and the sons of David were the princes.
18
Banaias, son of Joiada, was at the head of the Cerethites and Phelethites, and David’s sons, too, were his ministers.
