Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
And the Lord called Moses, and spoke to him from the tabernacle of the testimony, saying:
1
The Lord summoned Moses, and, from the tabernacle that bore record of him made known his will.
2
2
Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The man among you that shall offer to the Lord a sacrifice of the cattle, that is, offering victims of oxen and sheep,
2
These rules the Israelites were to follow, when any of them would offer the Lord a beast as a victim, from herd or from flock.
3
3
If his offering be a holocaust, and of the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish, at the door of the testimony, to make the Lord favourable to him:
3
The man who would win the Lord’s favour with burnt-sacrifice of cattle must bring a male beast, without blemish, to the door of the tabernacle,
4
4
And he shall put his hand upon the head of the victim, and it shall be acceptable, and help to its expiation.
4
and lay his hand on the beast’s head, and so it will be accepted, and will serve to make atonement for him.
5
5
And he shall immolate the calf before the Lord, and the priests the sons of Aaron shall offer the blood thereof, pouring it round about the altar, which is before the door of the tabernacle.
5
Then he will immolate the calf in the Lord’s presence, and the priests of Aaron’s line will make an offering of its blood, which they will pour round the altar at the tabernacle door.
6
detractaque pelle hostiæ, artus in frusta concident.
6
And when they have flayed the victim, they shall cut the joints into pieces,
6
Then they will skin the victim and cut its limbs into joints;
7
Et subjicient in altari ignem, strue lignorum ante composita:
7
And shall put fire on the altar, having before laid in order a pile of wood:
7
and, lighting a fire on the altar, where a pile of wood lies ready,
8
8
And they shall lay the parts that are cut out in order thereupon, to wit, the head, and all things that cleave to the liver,
8
they will lay on it the joints, the head and the fat round the liver.
9
intestinis et pedibus lotis aqua: adolebitque ea sacerdos super altare in holocaustum et suavem odorem Domino.
9
The entrails and feet being washed with water: And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for a holocaust, and a sweet savour to the Lord.
9
The entrails and feet must first be washed with water. So the priest will make a burnt-sacrifice of it all, there on the altar, and the smell of its burning will be acceptable to the Lord.
10
10
And if the offering be of the flocks, a holocaust of sheep or of goats, he shall offer a male without blemish:
10
As with the herd, so with the flock; if he would offer sacrifice, sheep or goat, let him bring a male without blemish,
11
11
And he shall immolate it at the side of the altar that looketh to the north, before the Lord: but the sons of Aaron shall pour the blood thereof upon the altar round about:
11
and immolate it at the northern side of the altar; and the priests of Aaron’s line will pour its blood round about,
12
12
And they shall divide the joints, the head, and all that cleave to the liver: and shall lay them upon the wood, under which the fire is to be put:
12
and will separate the limbs, the head, and the fat round the liver, and lay them upon the wood over the fire;
13
intestina vero et pedes lavabunt aqua. Et oblata omnia adolebit sacerdos super altare in holocaustum et odorem suavissimum Domino.
13
But the entrails and the feet they shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer it all and burn it all upon the altar for a holocaust, and most sweet savour to the Lord.
13
the entrails and the feet first washed in water. So the priest will burn the whole offering as a burnt-sacrifice, and the Lord will accept the smell of its burning.
14
14
But if the oblation of a holocaust to the Lord be of birds, of turtles, or of young pigeons,
14
If a bird is offered to the Lord as a burnt-sacrifice, it will be a turtle-dove, or a young pigeon.
15
15
The priest shall offer it at the altar: and twisting back the neck, and breaking the place of the wound, he shall make the blood run down upon the brim of the altar.
15
And the priest will bring it to the altar, where he will wring its neck and slit it open; then he will let the blood run over the foot of the altar,
16
vesiculam vero gutturis, et plumas projiciet prope altare ad orientalem plagam, in loco in quo cineres effundi solent,
16
But the crop of the throat, and the feathers he shall cast beside the altar at the east side, in the place where the ashes are wont to be poured out,
16
casting away the crop and feathers near by on the eastern side, where the ashes are poured out.
17
17
And he shall break the pinions thereof, and shall not cut, nor divide it with a knife, and shall burn it upon the altar, putting fire under the wood. It is a holocaust and oblation of most sweet savour to the Lord.
17
He will break the bird’s wings, but will not cut it up into joints with a knife; he will burn it whole over wood kindled on the altar. So it will be a burnt-sacrifice, and the smell of its burning will be acceptable to the Lord.
