1 Locutus quoque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses |
Ego Dominus. |
2 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, that they beware of those things that are consecrated of the children of Israel, and defile not the name of the things sanctified to me, which they offer. I am the Lord. |
2 giving him this command for Aaron and his sons: They must beware what use they make of the offerings brought by Israel; they must not profane the honour of these consecrated things; of things consecrated to the Lord. |
Ego sum Dominus. |
3 Say to them and to their posterity: Every man of your race, that approacheth to those things that are consecrated, and which the children of Israel have offered to the Lord, in whom there is uncleanness, shall perish before the Lord. I am the Lord. |
3 Tell them, tell all who follow, that if any of their race comes near these sacred offerings in a state of defilement, he is lost to my service; the service of the Lord. |
4 The man of the seed of Aaron, that is a leper, or that suffereth a running of the seed, shall not eat of those things that are sanctified to me, until he be healed. He that toucheth any thing unclean by occasion of the dead, and he whose seed goeth from him as in generation, |
4 Any of Aaron’s race who is a leper, or has a running at the reins, must cease to have any share of the hallowed food, until he is cured. Anyone of them who has touched a thing defiled by death, or has lost the seed of procreation, |
5 And he that toucheth a creeping thing, or any unclean thing, the touching of which is defiling, |
5 or perhaps has touched some creeping animal, or anything whose touch defiles, |
6 Shall be unclean until the evening, and shall not eat those things that are sanctified: but when he hath washed his flesh with water, |
6 remains unclean till sundown, so that he must not share the holy food. Not till he has bathed in water, |
7 And the sun is down, then being purified, he shall eat of the sanctified things, because it is his meat. |
7 and waited for the sun to go down, may he enjoy his privilege of sharing in it. |
Ego sum Dominus. |
8 That which dieth of itself, and that which was taken by a beast, they shall not eat, nor be defiled therewith. I am the Lord. |
8 The priests must not defile themselves by eating anything that falls dead, or has been a prey of a wild beast; they are the Lord’s priests. |
9 Let them keep my precepts, that they may not fall into sin, and die in the sanctuary, when they shall have defiled it. I am the Lord who sanctify them. |
9 They must observe my commands, and commit no fault; death shall overtake them, there in my sanctuary, if they profane it. It is I, the Lord, who have set them apart. |
10 No stranger shall eat of the sanctified things: a sojourner of the priests, or a hired servant, shall not eat of them. |
10 No one that is not of their family may share the holy food, no guest the priest entertains, no hired servant of his; |
11 But he whom the priest hath bought, and he that is his servant, born in his house, these shall eat of them. |
11 only a slave bought with his money or born in his house has the privilege. |
12 If the daughter of a priest be married to any of the people, she shall not eat of those things that are sanctified, nor of the firstfruits. |
12 If a priest’s daughter marries out of her clan, she loses her right to these hallowed offerings; |
13 But if she be a widow, or divorced, and having no children return to her father’s house, she shall eat of her father’s meats, as she was wont to do when she was a maid, no stranger hath leave to eat of them. |
13 but if she becomes a widow, or is rejected by her husband and comes home childless, she may eat with her family as when she was still a maid. It is only those who belong to another clan that may not share it. |
14 He that eateth of the sanctified things through ignorance, shall add the fifth part with that which he ate, and shall give it to the priest into the sanctuary. |
14 If anyone partakes of the holy food through inadvertence, he must go to the sanctuary and make restitution to the priest of the same quantity, with a fifth part added. |
15 Nec contaminabunt sanctificata filiorum Israël, quæ offerunt Domino: |
15 And they shall not profane the sanctified things of the children of Israel, which they offer to the Lord: |
15 There must be no profaning what the sons of Israel have offered to their God; |
16 ne forte sustineant iniquitatem delicti sui, cum sanctificata comederint. Ego Dominus qui sanctifico eos. |
16 Lest perhaps they bear the iniquity of their trespass, when they shall have eaten the sanctified things. I am the Lord who sanctify them. |
16 they will be held to account for it, if they eat this holy food. It is I, the Lord, who have set my priests apart. |
17 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
17 And the Lord spoke to Moses |
18 Speak to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The man of the house of Israel, and of the strangers who dwell with you, that offereth his oblation, either paying his vows, or offering of his own accord, whatsoever it be which he presenteth for a holocaust of the Lord, |
18 bidding him tell Aaron and his sons and all Israel: When any Israelite, or any alien dwelling among you, would offer the Lord burnt-sacrifice, either in payment of a vow, or out of devotion, |
19 To be offered by you, it shall be a male without blemish of the beeves, or of the sheep, or of the goats. |
19 and must present it through your hands, it must be a male victim, ox or sheep or goat, without blemish. |
20 If it have a blemish you shall not offer it, neither shall it be acceptable. |
20 If it has any blemish, it is unacceptable, and must not be offered. |
21 The man that offereth a victim of peace offerings to the Lord, either paying his vows, or offering of his own accord, whether of beeves or of sheep, shall offer it without blemish, that it may be acceptable: there shall be no blemish in it. |
21 And anyone who makes the Lord a welcome-offering, either in payment of a vow or out of devotion, must offer an ox or a sheep that is without blemish, if it is to be acceptable. It must have no blemish of any sort; |
22 If it be blind, or broken, or have a scar or blisters, or a scab, or a dry scurf: you shall not offer them to the Lord, nor burn any thing of them upon the Lord’s altar. |
22 if it is blind, or crippled, or scarred, disfigured by blisters or scab or mange, you must not offer it to the Lord, or burn it on the Lord’s altar. |
23 An ox or a sheep, that hath the ear and the tail cut off, thou mayst offer voluntarily: but a vow may not be paid with them. |
23 Ox or sheep that has ears or tail cut off may be offered out of devotion, but not in payment of a vow. |
24 You shall not offer to the Lord any beast that hath the testicles bruised, or crushed, or cut and taken away: neither shall you do any such thing in your land. |
24 No beast that has suffered crushing or bruising or gelding may be offered to the Lord; there must be no such custom in your country. |
25 You shall not offer bread to your God, from the hand of a stranger, nor any other thing that he would give: because they are all corrupted, and defiled: you shall not receive them. |
25 You must not offer to your God either bread or any other gift that comes from an alien; such gifts are tainted, there is a blemish in them, they shall find no acceptance with you. |
26 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
26 And the Lord gave Moses this message: |
27 When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, they shall be seven days under the udder of their dam: but the eighth day, and thenceforth, they may be offered to the Lord. |
27 Calf, or lamb, or kid, when it is newly born, must be allowed to suck for a whole week; only on the eighth day and afterwards may it be offered to the Lord. |
28 Whether it be a cow, or a sheep, they shall not be sacrificed the same day with their young ones. |
28 Cow or ewe, the dam must not be slaughtered on the same day as its young. |
29 If you immolate a victim for thanksgiving to the Lord, that he may be favourable, |
29 When you sacrifice a victim to the Lord by way of welcome-offering, to win his favour, |
30 eodem die comedetis eam: non remanebit quidquam in mane alterius diei. Ego Dominus. |
30 You shall eat it the same day, there shall not any of it remain until the morning of the next day. I am the Lord. |
30 you must eat it the same day, none must be left over till the morrow; the Lord will have his precepts observed. |
31 Custodite mandata mea, et facite ea. Ego Dominus. |
31 Keep my commandments, and do them. I am the Lord. |
31 Remember these commandments of mine, and live by them; the Lord’s commandments. |
32 Ne polluatis nomen meum sanctum, ut sanctificer in medio filiorum Israël. Ego Dominus qui sanctifico vos, |
32 Profane not my holy name, that I may be sanctified in the midst of the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctify you, |
32 Do not dishonour my holy name; it is among the sons of Israel that I would vindicate my holiness, I, the Lord, who have set you apart for myself, |
Ego Dominus. |
33 And who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that I might be your God: I am the Lord. |
33 and rescued you from the land of Egypt, so as to be your God; am I not the Lord? |
