Post mortem Josue, consuluerunt filii Israël Dominum, dicentes: Quis ascendet ante nos contra Chananæum, et erit dux belli?

After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?

Now that Josue was dead, the sons of Israel asked counsel of the Lord, to know who should be their champion against the Chanaanites, and bear the brunt of the attack.

Dixitque Dominus: Judas ascendet: ecce tradidi terram in manus ejus.

And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.

And the Lord’s bidding was, Juda shall be your champion; I have marked it down for his conquest.

Et ait Judas Simeoni fratri suo: Ascende mecum in sortem meam, et pugna contra Chananæum, ut et ego pergam tecum in sortem tuam. Et abiit cum eo Simeon.

And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.

Upon this, the men of Juda said to their brethren, the Simeonites, Come and help us win these lands of ours, and we, in our turn, will help to win your lands. So the men of Simeon marched at Juda’s side,

Ascenditque Judas, et tradidit Dominus Chananæum ac Pherezæum in manus eorum: et percusserunt in Bezec decem millia virorum.

And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.

and when they went to the attack, the Lord gave them mastery over Chanaanite and Pherezite at Bezec, where they overcame an army of ten thousand men.

Inveneruntque Adonibezec in Bezec, et pugnaverunt contra eum, ac percusserunt Chananæum et Pherezæum.

And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.

They encountered the king, Adonibezec, there in his capital; and when Chanaanite and Pherezite were routed,

Fugit autem Adonibezec: quem persecuti comprehenderunt, cæsis summitatibus manuum ejus ac pedum.

And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.

and Adonibezec fled, they pursued and caught him, and mutilated him, cutting off his thumbs and his great toes.

Dixitque Adonibezec: Septuaginta reges amputatis manuum ac pedum summitatibus colligebant sub mensa mea ciborum reliquias: sicut feci, ita reddidit mihi Deus. Adduxeruntque eum in Jerusalem, et ibi mortuus est.

And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

There were seventy kings, Adonibezec said, that used to eat the crumbs left under my table, mutilated hand and foot, every one. God has served me as I served others. And they took him to Jerusalem, where he died.

Oppugnantes ergo filii Juda Jerusalem, ceperunt eam, et percusserunt in ore gladii, tradentes cunctam incendio civitatem.

And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.

This city of Jerusalem was attacked and taken by the sons of Juda, who put the inhabitants to the sword, and burnt it all down.

Et postea descendentes pugnaverunt contra Chananæum, qui habitabat in montanis, et ad meridiem, et in campestribus.

And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.

They went down, too, and routed Chanaan on hill, desert and plain.

Pergensque Judas contra Chananæum, qui habitabat in Hebron (cujus nomen fuit antiquitus Cariath Arbe), percussit Sesai, et Ahiman, et Tholmai:

And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:

They even attacked the Chanaanites who lived at Hebron (which in old days was called Cariath Arbe), defeating Sesai, Ahiman, and Tholmai;

atque inde profectus abiit ad habitatores Dabir, cujus nomen vetus erat Cariath Sepher, id est, civitas litterarum.

And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.

then they marched against Dabir, that was once called Cariath-Sepher, the City of Writings.

Dixitque Caleb: Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher, et vastaverit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem.

And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.

(Caleb had promised that whoever defeated and took Cariath-Sepher should have the hand of his daughter Axa in marriage;

Cumque cepisset eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb minor, dedit ei Axam filiam suam conjugem.

And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.

and it was taken by his own younger brother, Othoniel son of Cenez, to whom he wedded his daughter Axa accordingly.

Quam pergentem in itinere monuit vir suus ut peteret a patre suo agrum. Quæ cum suspirasset sedens in asino, dixit ei Caleb: Quid habes?

And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?

One day he heard her sighing as she rode on her ass in his company, and asked what ailed her. She had been urged by her husband to win him a grant of land from her father.

At illa respondit: Da mihi benedictionem, quia terram arentem dedisti mihi: da et irriguam aquis. Dedit ergo ei Caleb irriguum superius, et irriguum inferius.

But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.

So her answer was, Grant me yet one present; the portion thou hast given me is parched land; give me well-watered land too. So he gave her the High Springs and the Low Springs both together. )

Filii autem Cinæi cognati Moysi ascenderunt de civitate palmarum cum filiis Juda, in desertum sortis ejus, quod est ad meridiem Arad, et habitaverunt cum eo.

And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.

When the men of Juda made their expedition from the city of Palm-trees, to conquer the waste land that was to be theirs south of Arad, they were accompanied by the Cinites, into whose clan Moses had married; and these shared the land with them.

Abiit autem Judas cum Simeone fratre suo, et percusserunt simul Chananæum qui habitabat in Sephaath, et interfecerunt eum. Vocatumque est nomen urbis, Horma, id est, anathema.

And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.

Together, Juda and Simeon defeated and destroyed the Chanaanites in Sephaath; which city was afterwards called Horma, that is, Forfeited.

Cepitque Judas Gazam cum finibus suis, et Ascalonem, atque Accaron cum terminis suis.

And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines.

Gaza, too, and Ascalon, and Accaron, with the regions around them fell into Juda’s power;

Fuitque Dominus cum Juda, et montana possedit: nec potuit delere habitatores vallis, quia falcatis curribus abundabant.

And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.

and still the Lord was on their side; so that they occupied all the hill-country, although they could not overcome the plain-dwellers, that had scythed chariots in plenty.

Dederuntque Caleb Hebron, sicut dixerat Moyses, qui delevit ex ea tres filios Enac.

And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.

So Caleb had his portion, as Moses promised that he should; the city of Hebron, where he defeated the three sons of Enac.

Jebusæum autem habitatorem Jerusalem non deleverunt filii Benjamin: habitavitque Jebusæus cum filiis Benjamin in Jerusalem, usque in præsentem diem.

But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.

As for Jerusalem, Benjamin could never exterminate the Jebusites that lived there, and they share it with the sons of Benjamin to this day.

Domus quoque Joseph ascendit in Bethel, fuitque Dominus cum eis.

The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

Meanwhile the men of Joseph made an expedition against Bethel, where the Lord gave them good speed.

Nam cum obsiderent urbem, quæ prius Luza vocabatur,

For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,

They were laying siege to the city (which in former times was called Luza)

viderunt hominem egredientem de civitate, dixeruntque ad eum: Ostende nobis introitum civitatis, et faciemus tecum misericordiam.

They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

when they found a man escaping from it, and promised him his life if he would shew them how to enter it;

Qui cum ostendisset eis, percusserunt urbem in ore gladii: hominem autem illum, et omnem cognationem ejus, dimiserunt.

And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go:

this he did, and they put the inhabitants to the sword, except this one man and his family.

Qui dimissus, abiit in terram Hetthim, et ædificavit ibi civitatem, vocavitque eam Luzam: quæ ita appellatur usque in præsentem diem.

Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.

And he, after this escape, made his way into the Hethite country, where he built a city that is still called Luza.

Manasses quoque non delevit Bethsan, et Thanac cum viculis suis, et habitatores Dor, et Jeblaam, et Mageddo cum viculis suis, cœpitque Chananæus habitare cum eis.

Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.

In Manasses, Bethsan, Thanac, Dor, Jeblaam and Mageddo, with the villages around them, were never cleared of their inhabitants; the Chanaanites made bold to live on there.

Postquam autem confortatus est Israël, fecit eos tributarios, et delere noluit.

But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.

When the Israelites had grown stronger, they subdued them and forced them to pay tribute, but did not exterminate them.

Ephraim etiam non interfecit Chananæum, qui habitabat in Gazer, sed habitavit cum eo.

Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him.

Ephraim, too, spared the Chanaanites in Gazer, and shared it with them;

Zabulon non delevit habitatores Cetron, et Naalol: sed habitavit Chananæus in medio ejus, factusque est ei tributarius.

Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries.

nor did Zabulon exterminate the inhabitants of Cetron and Naalol; the Chanaanites lived on among them as tributaries.

Aser quoque non delevit habitatores Accho, et Sidonis, Ahalab, et Achazib, et Helba, et Aphec, et Rohob:

Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:

In Aser, Accho, Sidon, Ahalab, Achazib, Helba, Aphec and Rohob were spared;

habitavitque in medio Chananæi habitatoris illius terræ, nec interfecit eum.

And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.

the Chanaanite inhabitants of those parts lived on there.

Nephthali quoque non delevit habitatores Bethsames, et Bethanath: et habitavit inter Chananæum habitatorem terræ, fueruntque ei Bethsamitæ et Bethanitæ tributarii.

Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.

Nephthali shared Bethsames and Bethanath with the old Chanaanite inhabitants, who paid tribute to them.

Arctavitque Amorrhæus filios Dan in monte, nec dedit eis locum ut ad planiora descenderent:

And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain:

And as for the men of Dan, the Amorrhites kept them cooped up in the hills, and would not let them find any footing in the level plains;

habitavitque in monte Hares, quod interpretatur testaceo, in Ajalon et Salebim. Et aggravata est manus domus Joseph, factusque est ei tributarius.

And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.

they still made bold to live on in mount Hares (the Mount of Pottery) and Aialon and Salebim, until at last the rising power of Joseph forced them to become tributaries.

Fuit autem terminus Amorrhæi ab ascensu Scorpionis, petra, et superiora loca.

And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.

The territory of these Amorrhites once reached as far as the Scorpion Pass, and Petra, and beyond them still.
