1 Locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses |
2 Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: I am the Lord your God. |
2 bidding him give the sons of Israel this message: I am the Lord your God; |
3 You shall not do according to the custom of the land of Egypt, in which you dwelt: neither shall you act according to the manner of the country of Chanaan, into which I will bring you, nor shall you walk in their ordinances. |
3 it is not for you to live by the customs of that Egyptian land in which you once dwelt, or to imitate the men of Chanaan, the new home I am giving you, and follow their observances. |
4 Facietis judicia mea, et præcepta mea servabitis, et ambulabitis in eis. Ego Dominus Deus vester. |
4 You shall do my judgments, and shall observe my precepts, and shall walk in them. I am the Lord your God. |
4 It is my decrees you will execute, my commands you will obey, following them closely; am I not the Lord your God? |
5 Custodite leges meas atque judicia, quæ faciens homo, vivet in eis. Ego Dominus. |
5 Keep my laws and my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them. I am the Lord. |
5 It is my laws, my decrees you must keep; they give life to the man who lives by them; am I not the Lord? |
Ego Dominus. |
6 No man shall approach to her that is near of kin to him, to uncover her nakedness. I am the Lord. |
6 And it is I, the Lord, who tell you that no man is to betake himself to a woman who is near of kin to him, and mate with her. |
7 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother: she is thy mother, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. |
7 Thou shalt not come between thy father’s sheets, and mate with her that bore thee; wouldst thou mate with thy own mother? |
8 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s wife: for it is the nakedness of thy father. |
8 Thou shalt not mate with her that is thy father’s wife; her shame is his. |
9 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy sister by father or by mother, whether born at home or abroad. |
9 Thou shalt not mate with thy sister by either parent, born in the same house or born elsewhere. |
10 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy son’s daughter, or thy daughter’s daughter: because it is thy own nakedness. |
10 Thou shalt not mate with the daughter of thy own son or daughter; her shame is thine. |
11 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s wife’s daughter, whom she bore to thy father, and who is thy sister. |
11 Thou shalt not mate with any daughter thy father’s wife bears him; she is thy sister. |
12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s sister: because she is the flesh of thy father. |
12 Thou shalt not mate with thy father’s sister, thy own father’s flesh and blood; |
13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother’s sister: because she is thy mother’s flesh. |
13 nor with thy mother’s sister, thy own mother’s flesh and blood. |
14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother: neither shalt thou approach to his wife, who is joined to thee by affinity. |
14 Thou shalt not come between thy uncle’s sheets and mate with his wife; she is bound to thee by affinity. |
15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: because she is thy son’s wife, neither shalt thou discover her shame. |
15 Thou shalt not mate with thy daughter-in-law; wouldst thou mate with the wife of thy own son? |
16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: because it is the nakedness of thy brother. |
16 Thou shalt not mate with thy brother’s wife; her shame is his. |
17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy wife and her daughter. Thou shalt not take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to discover her shame: because they are her flesh, and such copulation is incest. |
17 Thou shalt not mate with a woman and also with her daughter, no, nor with any grand-daughter of hers; they are flesh and blood of hers, and all such commerce is incestuous. |
18 Sororem uxoris tuæ in pellicatum illius non accipies, nec revelabis turpitudinem ejus adhuc illa vivente. |
18 Thou shalt not take thy wife’s sister for a harlot, to rival her, neither shalt thou discover her nakedness, while she is yet living. |
18 Thou shalt not make a concubine of thy wife’s sister, mating with her while thy wife still lives. |
19 Thou shalt not approach to a woman having her flowers, neither shalt thou uncover her nakedness. |
19 Thou shalt not come nigh a woman and mate with her during her monthly time. |
20 Thou shalt not lie with thy neighbour’s wife, nor be defiled with mingling of seed. |
20 Thou shalt not defile thyself by bedding with thy neighbour’s wife. |
Ego Dominus. |
21 Thou shalt not give any of thy seed to be consecrated to the idol Moloch, nor defile the name of thy God: I am the Lord. |
21 Thou shalt not yield up any child of thine to be devoted to the false god Moloch, doing dishonour to the name of thy God; am I not the Lord? |
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind, because it is an abomination. |
22 Thou shalt not have commerce with a man as if it had been with a woman; such commerce is abominable. |
23 Thou shalt not copulate with any beast, neither shalt thou be defiled with it. A woman shall not lie down to a beast, nor copulate with it: because it is a heinous crime. |
23 Thou shalt not defile thyself by commerce with a beast; nor shall a woman allow any beast to have commerce with her; it is foully done. |
24 Nec polluamini in omnibus his quibus contaminatæ sunt universæ gentes, quas ego ejiciam ante conspectum vestrum, |
24 Defile not yourselves with any of these things with which all the nations have been defiled, which I will cast out before you, |
24 Do not defile yourselves like the nations I am dispossessing to make room for you; |
25 And with which the land is defiled: the abominations of which I will visit, that it may vomit out its inhabitants. |
25 the whole land is contaminated by their presence, and I am calling it to account for these ill deeds, till it vomits out its own inhabitants. |
26 Keep ye my ordinances and my judgments, and do not any of these abominations: neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you. |
26 Citizens alike and aliens, that dwell among you, must observe these laws and decrees I am giving you, and keep clear of all such abominations; |
27 For all these detestable things the inhabitants of the land have done, that were before you, and have defiled it. |
27 the very abominations by which the former inhabitants of the land have contaminated it. |
28 Cavete ergo ne et vos similiter evomat, cum paria feceritis, sicut evomuit gentem, quæ fuit ante vos. |
28 Beware then, lest in like manner, it vomit you also out, if you do the like things, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. |
28 Be sure that it will vomit you out like those others, if you do as they did. |
29 Omnis anima, quæ fecerit de abominationibus his quippiam, peribit de medio populi sui. |
29 Every soul that shall commit any of these abominations, shall perish from the midst of his people. |
29 Whoever is guilty of any such abomination is lost to his people. |
30 Custodite mandata mea. Ego Dominus Deus vester. |
30 Keep my commandments. Do not the things which they have done, that have been before you, and be not defiled therein. I am the Lord your God. |
30 Keep my commandments, and do not defile yourselves by imitating your forerunners; am I not the Lord your God? |
