1
Non turbetur cor vestrum. Creditis in Deum, et in me credite.
1
Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me.
1
Do not let your heart be distressed; as you have faith in God, have faith in me.
2
In domo Patris mei mansiones multæ sunt; si quominus dixissem vobis: quia vado parare vobis locum.
2
In my Father’s house there are many mansions. If not, I would have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you.
2
There are many dwelling-places in my Father’s house; otherwise, should I have said to you, I am going away to prepare a home for you?
3
3
And if I shall go, and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you also may be.
3
And though I do go away, to prepare you a home, I am coming back; and then I will take you to myself, so that you too may be where I am.
4
Et quo ego vado scitis, et viam scitis.
4
And whither I go you know, and the way you know.
4
And now you know where it is I am going; and you know the way there.
5
5
Thomas saith to him: Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
5
Thomas said to him, But, Lord, we do not know where thou art going; how are we to know the way there?
6
Nemo venit ad Patrem, nisi per me.
6
Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.
6
Jesus said to him, I am the way; I am truth and life; nobody can come to the Father, except through me.
7
7
If you had known me, you would without doubt have known my Father also: and from henceforth you shall know him, and you have seen him.
7
If you had learned to recognize me, you would have learned to recognize my Father too. From now onwards you are to recognize him; you have seen him.
8
8
Philip saith to him: Lord, shew us the Father, and it is enough for us.
8
At this, Philip said to him, Lord, let us see the Father; that is all we ask.
9
Dicit ei Jesus: Tanto tempore vobiscum sum, et non cognovistis me? Philippe, qui videt me, videt et Patrem. Quomodo tu dicis: Ostende nobis Patrem?
9
Jesus saith to him: Have I been so long a time with you; and have you not known me? Philip, he that seeth me seeth the Father also. How sayest thou, Shew us the Father?
9
What, Philip, Jesus said to him, here am I, who have been all this while in your company; hast thou not learned to recognize me yet? Whoever has seen me, has seen the Father; what dost thou mean by saying, Let us see the Father?
10
Verba quæ ego loquor vobis, a meipso non loquor. Pater autem in me manens, ipse fecit opera.
10
Do you not believe, that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works.
10
Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you are not my own words; and the Father, who dwells continually in me, achieves in me his own acts of power.
11
11
Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?
11
If you cannot trust my word, when I tell you that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me,
12
alioquin propter opera ipsa credite.
12
Otherwise believe for the very works’ sake. Amen, amen I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do; and greater than these shall he do.
12
let these powerful acts themselves be my warrant. Believe me when I tell you this; the man who has learned to believe in me will be able to do what I do; nay, he will be able to do greater things yet.
13
13
Because I go to the Father: and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do: that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
13
It is to my Father I am going: and whatever request you make of the Father in my name, I will grant, so that through the Son the Father may be glorified;
14
Si quid petieritis me in nomine meo, hoc faciam.
14
If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do.
14
every request you make of me in my own name, I myself will grant it to you.
15
Si diligitis me, mandata mea servate:
15
If you love me, keep my commandments.
15
If you have any love for me, you must keep the commandments which I give you;
16
16
And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever.
16
and then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another to befriend you, one who is to dwell continually with you for ever.
17
17
The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you.
17
It is the truth-giving Spirit, for whom the world can find no room, because it cannot see him, cannot recognize him. But you are to recognize him; he will be continually at your side, nay, he will be in you.
18
Non relinquam vos orphanos: veniam ad vos.
18
I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.
18
I will not leave you friendless; I am coming to you.
19
Adhuc modicum, et mundus me jam non videt. Vos autem videtis me: quia ego vivo, et vos vivetis.
19
Yet a little while: and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live.
19
It is only a little while now, before the world is to see me no more; but you can see me, because I live on, and you too will have life.
20
In illo die vos cognoscetis quia ego sum in Patre meo, et vos in me, et ego in vobis.
20
In that day you shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
20
When that day comes, you will learn for yourselves that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21
21
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
21
The man who loves me is the man who keeps the commandments he has from me; and he who loves me will win my Father’s love, and I too will love him, and will reveal myself to him.
22
22
Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it, that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?
22
Here Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him, Lord, how comes it that thou wilt only reveal thyself to us, and not to the world?
23
Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Si quis diligit me, sermonem meum servabit, et Pater meus diliget eum, et ad eum veniemus, et mansionem apud eum faciemus;
23
Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.
23
Jesus answered him, If a man has any love for me, he will be true to my word; and then he will win my Father’s love, and we will both come to him, and make our continual abode with him;
24
24
He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard, is not mine; but the Father’s who sent me.
24
whereas the man who has no love for me, lets my sayings pass him by. And this word, which you have been hearing from me, comes not from me, but from my Father who sent me.
25
Hæc locutus sum vobis apud vos manens.
25
These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.
25
So much converse I have held with you, still at your side.
26
Paraclitus autem Spiritus Sanctus, quem mittet Pater in nomine meo, ille vos docebit omnia, et suggeret vobis omnia quæcumque dixero vobis.
26
But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.
26
He who is to befriend you, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send on my account, will in his turn make everything plain, and recall to your minds everything I have said to you.
27
Pacem relinquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: non quomodo mundus dat, ego do vobis. Non turbetur cor vestrum, neque formidet.
27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.
27
Peace is my bequest to you, and the peace which I will give you is mine to give; I do not give peace as the world gives it. Do not let your heart be distressed, or play the coward.
28
28
You have heard that I said to you: I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me, you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father: for the Father is greater than I.
28
You have heard me say that I am going away and coming back to you. If you really loved me, you would be glad to hear that I am on my way to my Father; my Father has greater power than I.
29
29
And now I have told you before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe.
29
I have told you of this before it happens, so that when it happens you may learn to believe.
30
30
I will not now speak many things with you. For the prince of this world cometh, and in me he hath not any thing.
30
I have no longer much time for converse with you; one is coming, who has power over the world, but no hold over me.
31
Surgite, eamus hinc.
31
But that the world may know, that I love the Father: and as the Father hath given me commandment, so do I. Arise, let us go hence.
31
No, but the world must be convinced that I love the Father, and act only as the Father has commanded me to act. Rise up, we must be going on our way.
