1 Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end. |
1 Before the paschal feast began, Jesus already knew that the time had come for his passage from this world to the Father. He still loved those who were his own, whom he was leaving in the world, and he would give them the uttermost proof of his love. |
2 And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,) |
2 Supper was over, and the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, son of Simon, the Iscariot, to betray him. |
3 Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God; |
3 sciens quia omnia dedit ei Pater in manus, et quia a Deo exivit, et ad Deum vadit: |
3 Jesus knew well that the Father had left everything in his hands; knew it was from God that he came, and to God that he went. |
4 He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself. |
4 And now, rising from supper, he laid his garments aside, took a towel, and put it about him; |
5 After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. |
5 Deinde mittit aquam in pelvim, et cœpit lavare pedes discipulorum, et extergere linteo, quo erat præcinctus. |
5 and then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, wiping them with the towel that girded him. |
6 He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet? |
6 So, when he came to Simon Peter, Peter asked him, Lord, is it for thee to wash my feet? |
7 Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. |
7 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Quod ego facio, tu nescis modo: scies autem postea. |
7 Jesus answered him, It is not for thee to know, now, what I am doing; but thou wilt understand it afterwards. |
8 Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me. |
8 Dicit ei Petrus: Non lavabis mihi pedes in æternum. Respondit ei Jesus: Si non lavero te, non habebis partem mecum. |
8 Peter said to him, I will never let thee wash my feet; and Jesus answered him, If I do not wash thee, it means thou hast no companionship with me. |
9 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head. |
9 Then, Lord, said Peter, wash my hands and my head too, not only my feet. |
10 Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all. |
10 But Jesus told him, A man who has bathed does not need to do more than wash the stains from his feet; he is clean all over. And you are clean now; only, not all of you. |
11 For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean. |
11 He knew who his betrayer was; that is why he said, You are not all clean. |
12 Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you? |
12 Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum, et accepit vestimenta sua, cum recubuisset iterum, dixit eis: Scitis quid fecerim vobis? |
12 Then, when he had finished washing their feet and put on his garments, he sat down again, and said to them, Do you understand what it is I have done to you? |
13 You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am. |
13 Vos vocatis me Magister et Domine, et bene dicitis: sum etenim. |
13 You hail me as the Master, and the Lord; and you are right, it is what I am. |
14 If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another’s feet. |
14 Why then, if I have washed your feet, I who am the Master and the Lord, you in your turn ought to wash each other’s feet; |
15 For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also. |
15 I have been setting you an example, which will teach you in your turn to do what I have done for you. |
16 Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him. |
16 Believe me, no slave can be greater than his master, no apostle greater than he by whom he was sent. |
17 If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them. |
17 Si hæc scitis, beati eritis si feceritis ea. |
17 Now that you know this, blessed are you if you perform it. |
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me. |
18 I am not thinking of all of you when I say this, I know who are the men I have chosen; well, it remains for the passage in scripture to be fulfilled, The man who shared my bread has lifted his heel to trip me up. |
19 At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he. |
19 I am telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe it was written of me. |
20 Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. |
20 Amen, amen dico vobis: qui accipit si quem misero, me accipit; qui autem me accipit, accipit eum qui me misit. |
20 Believe me when I tell you this; the man who welcomes one whom I send, welcomes me; and the man who welcomes me, welcomes him who sent me. |
21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me. |
21 After saying so much, Jesus bore witness to the distress he felt in his heart; Believe me, he said, believe me, one of you is to betray me. |
22 The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke. |
22 And the disciples looked at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. |
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. |
23 Erat ergo recumbens unus ex discipulis ejus in sinu Jesu, quem diligebat Jesus. |
23 Jesus had one disciple, whom he loved, who was now sitting with his head against Jesus’ breast; |
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh? |
24 to him, therefore, Simon Peter made a sign, and asked him, Who is it he means? |
25 He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it? |
25 And he, leaning his head back upon Jesus’ breast, asked him, Lord, who is it? |
26 Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. |
26 Jesus answered, It is the man to whom I give this piece of bread which I am dipping in the dish. Then he dipped the bread, and gave it to Judas the son of Simon, the Iscariot. |
27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly. |
27 Et post buccellam, introivit in eum Satanas. |
27 The morsel once given, Satan entered into him; and Jesus said to him, Be quick on thy errand. |
28 Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him. |
28 None of those who sat there could understand the drift of what he said; |
29 For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor. |
29 some of them thought, since Judas kept the common purse, that Jesus was saying to him, Go and buy what we need for the feast, or bidding him give some alms to the poor. |
30 He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night. |
30 Cum ergo accepisset ille buccellam, exivit continuo. Erat autem nox. |
30 He, as soon as he received the morsel, had gone out; and now it was night. |
31 When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. |
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man has achieved his glory, and in his glory God is exalted. |
32 If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him. |
32 Since, in his glory, God is exalted, it is for God to exalt him in his own glory, and exalt him without delay. |
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now. |
33 Filioli, adhuc modicum vobiscum sum. |
33 It is only for a short time that I am with you, my children. You will look for me, and now I have to tell you what I once told the Jews, you cannot reach the place where I am. |
34 A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. |
34 I have a new commandment to give you, that you are to love one another; that your love for one another is to be like the love I have borne you. |
35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. |
35 The mark by which all men will know you for my disciples will be the love you bear one another. |
36 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter. |
36 Dicit ei Simon Petrus: Domine, quo vadis? Respondit Jesus: Quo ego vado non potes me modo sequi: sequeris autem postea. |
36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where art thou going? Jesus answered him, I am going where thou canst not follow me now, but shalt follow me afterwards. |
37 Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee. |
37 Dicit ei Petrus: Quare non possum te sequi modo? animam meam pro te ponam. |
37 Lord, Peter said to him, why cannot I follow thee now? I am ready to lay down my life for thy sake. |
38 Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice. |
38 Respondit ei Jesus: Animam tuam pro me pones? amen, amen dico tibi: non cantabit gallus, donec ter me neges. |
38 Thou art ready, answered Jesus, to lay down thy life for my sake? Believe me, by cock-crow thou wilt thrice disown me. |
