1 In anno secundo Darii regis, in mense sexto, in die una mensis, factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ, ad Zorobabel, filium Salathiel, ducem Juda, et ad Jesum, filium Josedec, sacerdotem magnum, dicens: |
1 It was in the second year of Darius’ reign, on the first day of the sixth month of it, that a message came from the Lord through the prophet Aggaeus; came to Zorobabel, son of Salathiel, that was governor of Juda, and to the high priest, Josue son of Josedec. And thus it ran: |
1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Aggeus the prophet, to Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, governor of Juda, and to Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, saying: |
2 Hæc ait Dominus exercituum, dicens: Populus iste dicit: Nondum venit tempus domus Domini ædificandæ. |
2 Word from the Lord of hosts to his people, that will not restore his temple, but cry, Too early yet! |
2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, saying: This people saith: The time is not yet come for building the house of the Lord. |
3 Et factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ, dicens: |
3 Listen, the Lord said to them through the prophet Aggaeus, |
3 And the word of the Lord came by the hand of Aggeus the prophet, saying: |
4 is it not too early yet for you to have roofs over your heads, and my temple in ruins? |
4 Is it time for you to dwell in ceiled houses, and this house lie desolate? |
5 Et nunc hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Ponite corda vestra super vias vestras. |
5 Think well on it, says the Lord of hosts; |
5 And now thus saith the Lord of hosts: Set your hearts to consider your ways. |
6 here is much sown, and little reaped, nor eating brings you a full belly, nor wine a merry heart; such clothes you wear as leave you shivering, such wages win as leak out at purse’s bottom! |
6 You have sowed much, and brought in little: you have eaten, but have not had enough: you have drunk, but have not been filled with drink: you have clothed yourselves, but have not been warmed: and he that hath earned wages, put them into a bag with holes. |
7 Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Ponite corda vestra super vias vestras; |
7 Think well on it, says the Lord of hosts; |
7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Set your hearts upon your ways: |
8 ascendite in montem, portate ligna, et ædificate domum: et acceptabilis mihi erit, et glorificabor, dicit Dominus. |
8 up to the hill-side with you, fetch timber and restore my temple, if content me you will, the Lord says, if honour me you will! |
8 Go up to the mountain, bring timber, and build the house: and it shall be acceptable to me, and I shall be glorified, saith the Lord. |
9 So much attempted, so little attained; store you brought into your houses withered at my breath; would you know the reason for it? says the Lord of hosts. Because to your own houses you run helter-skelter, and my temple in ruins! |
9 You have looked for more, and behold it became less, and you brought it home, and I blowed it away: why, saith the Lord of hosts? because my house is desolate, and you make haste every man to his own house. |
10 That is why the skies are forbidden to rain on you, earth to afford its bounty; |
10 Therefore the heavens over you were stayed from giving dew, and the earth was hindered from yielding her fruits: |
11 et vocavi siccitatem super terram, et super montes, et super triticum, et super vinum, et super oleum, et quæcumque profert humus, et super homines, et super jumenta, et super omnem laborem manuum. |
11 ban of barrenness lies on plain and hill, wheat and wine and oil and all the earth yields, man and beast and all they toil to win. |
11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and upon all that the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon beasts, and upon all the labour of the hands. |
12 What made they of it, Salathiel’s son Zorobabel, and the high priest, Josue son of Josedec, and all the people with them? That voice they could not choose but heed, that message from the Lord their God sent to them by the prophet Aggaeus, and they were sore adread of the divine warning. |
12 Then Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and all the remnant of the people hearkened to the voice of the Lord their God, and to the words of Aggeus the prophet, as the Lord their God sent him to them: and the people feared before the Lord. |
13 Et dixit Aggæus, nuntius Domini de nuntiis Domini, populo dicens: Ego vobiscum sum, dicit Dominus. |
13 Yet here was divine encouragement; Aggaeus, the Lord’s own messenger, gave them the Lord’s own assurance he was at their side. |
13 And Aggeus the messenger of the Lord, as one of the messengers of the Lord, spoke, saying to the people: I am with you, saith the Lord. |
14 So the Lord put heart into them, governor and priest and people alike; and they set to work building up the temple of the Lord God of hosts. |
14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zorobabel the son of Salathiel governor of Juda, and the spirit of Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and the spirit of all the rest of the people: and they went in, and did the work in the house of the Lord of hosts their God. |
