In the four and twentieth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king, they began.

In die vigesima et quarta mensis, in sexto mense, in anno secundo Darii regis.

This was on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius.

And in the seventh month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Aggeus the prophet, saying:

In septimo mense, vigesima et prima mensis, factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ, dicens:

Afterwards, on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Lord sent another message through the prophet Aggaeus.

Speak to Zorobabel the son of Salathiel the governor of Juda, and to Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and to the rest of the people, saying:

Loquere ad Zorobabel, filium Salathiel, ducem Juda, et ad Jesum, filium Josedec, sacerdotem magnum, et ad reliquos populi, dicens:

To Zorobabel, and Josue, and all the people with them his word was:

Who is left among you, that saw this house in its first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in comparison to thatas nothing in your eyes?

Quis in vobis est derelictus, qui vidit domum istam in gloria sua prima? et quid vos videtis hanc nunc? numquid non ita est, quasi non sit in oculis vestris?

Tell me, those of you who saw this house in its former brightness, what make you of it now? It is no better in your eyes than a very nothing.

Yet now take courage, O Zorobabel, saith the Lord, and take courage, O Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest, and take courage, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord of hosts: and perform (for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts)

Et nunc confortare, Zorobabel, dicit Dominus; et confortare, Jesu, fili Josedec, sacerdos magne; et confortare, omnis populus terræ, dicit Dominus exercituum: et facite (quoniam ego vobiscum sum, dicit Dominus exercituum)

Take heart, Zorobabel; Josue, son of Josedec, take heart! And you, too, people of the land, the Lord of hosts bids you put heart into the work; is not he, the Lord of hosts, at your side?…

The word that I covenanted with you when you came out of the land of Egypt: and my spirit shall be in the midst of you: fear not.

verbum quod pepigi vobiscum cum egrederemini de terra Ægypti: et spiritus meus erit in medio vestrum: nolite timere.

the promise I gave when you escaped from Egypt; my own spirit shall be among you, do not be afraid.

For thus saith the Lord of hosts: Yet one little while, and I will move the heaven and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land.

Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Adhuc unum modicum est, et ego commovebo cælum, et terram, et mare, et aridam.

A little while now, the Lord of hosts says, and I mean to set heaven and earth, sea and dry land rocking;

And I will move all nations: AND THE DESIRED OF ALL NATIONS SHALL COME: and I will fill this house with glory: saith the Lord of hosts.

Et movebo omnes gentes, et veniet desideratus cunctis gentibus: et implebo domum istam gloria, dicit Dominus exercituum.

stirred all the nations shall be, hither shall come the prize the whole world treasures, and I will fill this temple with the brightness of my presence, says the Lord of hosts.

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.

Meum est argentum, et meum est aurum, dicit Dominus exercituum.

Silver or gold, what matters it? the Lord of hosts says. Both are mine!

Great shall be the glory of this last house more than of the first, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place I will give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

Magna erit gloria domus istius novissimæ plus quam primæ, dicit Dominus exercituum: et in loco isto dabo pacem, dicit Dominus exercituum.

Bright this new temple shall be, he tells you, as never the first was; here, he tells you, his blessing shall rest.

In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius the king, the word of the Lord came to Aggeus the prophet, saying:

In vigesima et quarta noni mensis, in anno secundo Darii regis, factum est verbum Domini ad Aggæum prophetam, dicens:

Then, on the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in this second year of king Darius, another message came from the Lord to the prophet Aggaeus,

Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Ask the priests the law, saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Interroga sacerdotes legem, dicens:

bidding him, in the name of the Lord of hosts, make enquiry of the priests upon a matter touching the law.

If a man carry sanctified flesh in the skirt of his garment, and touch with his skirt, bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat: shall it be sanctified? And the priests answered, and said: No.

Si tulerit homo carnem sanctificatam in ora vestimenti sui, et tetigerit de summitate ejus panem, aut pulmentum, aut vinum, aut oleum, aut omnem cibum, numquid sanctificabitur? Respondentes autem sacerdotes, dixerunt: Non.

And the question was this: Here is one carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and with this same fold chances to touch bread or broth, wine or oil, or what food you will; does this food become consecrated thereby? And the priests said No.

And Aggeus said: If one that is unclean by occasion of a soul touch any of all these things, shall it be defiled? And the priests answered, and said: It shall be defiled.

Et dixit Aggæus: Si tetigerit pollutus in anima ex omnibus his, numquid contaminabitur? Et responderunt sacerdotes, et dixerunt: Contaminabitur.

Why then, Aggaeus went on, let some other man touch this food, one that is contaminated by the contact of a dead thing, will the food be defiled? And they answered, Defiled it is.

And Aggeus answered, and said: So is this people, and so is this nation before my face, saith the Lord, and so is all the work of their hands: and all that they have offered there, shall be defiled.

Et respondit Aggæus, et dixit: Sic populus iste, et sic gens ista ante faciem meam, dicit Dominus, et sic omne opus manuum eorum: et omnia quæ obtulerunt ibi, contaminata erunt.

Then Aggaeus opened his mind to them: Here is a whole people, a whole race, the Lord says, that shews defiled under my scrutiny. Never an enterprise of theirs, never an offering they bring, but is defiled.

And now consider in your hearts, from this day and upward, before there was a stone laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord.

Et nunc ponite corda vestra a die hac et supra, antequam poneretur lapis super lapidem in templo Domini.

But now, mark well how you thrive henceforward. Whilst none would be at pains to set pillar on base, here in the Lord’s temple,

When you went to a heap of twenty bushels, and they became ten: and you went into the press, to press out fifty vessels, and they became twenty.

Cum accederetis ad acervum viginti modiorum, et fierent decem; et intraretis ad torcular, ut exprimeretis quinquaginta lagenas, et fiebant viginti.

how fared it with yonder twenty-bushel heap of corn? Look closer, and it was but ten bushels. Did you think to press fifty quarts into the vat? There were but twenty.

I struck you with a blasting wind, and all the works of your hand with the mildew and with hail, yet there was none among you that returned to me, saith the Lord.

Percussi vos vento urente, et aurugine, et grandine omnia opera manuum vestrarum: et non fuit in vobis qui reverteretur ad me, dicit Dominus.

Sirocco I sent and mildew, smote all your crops with hail, and you would not come back to me, the Lord says.

Set your hearts from this day, and henceforward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month: from the day that the foundations of the temple of the Lord were laid, and lay it up in your hearts.

Ponite corda vestra ex die ista, et in futurum, a die vigesima et quarta noni mensis: a die qua fundamenta jacta sunt templi Domini, ponite super cor vestrum.

Mark well how you thrive henceforward, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, when you laid the foundations of the Lord’s temple; mark it well.

Is the seed as yet sprung up? or hath the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree as yet flourished? from this day I will bless you.

Numquid jam semen in germine est, et adhuc vinea, et ficus, et malogranatum, et lignum olivæ non floruit? ex die ista benedicam.

Not yet has the corn ripened, not yet have vine and fig, pomegranate and olive, had time to blossom; but on all these my blessing lies henceforward.

And the word of the Lord came a second time to Aggeus in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying:

Et factum est verbum Domini secundo ad Aggæum in vigesima et quarta mensis, dicens:

And this further message Aggaeus had from the Lord, on that twenty-fourth day of the month,

Speak to Zorobabel the governor of Juda, saying: I will move both heaven and earth.

Loquere ad Zorobabel ducem Juda, dicens: Ego movebo cælum pariter et terram,

for Zorobabel, the governor of Juda: Earth and heaven both I mean to set rocking;

And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and will destroy the strength of the kingdom of the Gentiles: and I will overthrow the chariot, and him that rideth therein: and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

et subvertam solium regnorum, et conteram fortitudinem regni gentium: et subvertam quadrigam et ascensorem ejus, et descendent equi, et ascensores eorum, vir in gladio fratris sui.

royal thrones shall be overturned, and the power of Gentile kingdoms brought to nothing; overthrown they lie, chariot and charioteer, down come horse and rider, friend turning his sword against friend;

In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, I will take thee, O Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, my servant, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet, for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.

In die illa, dicit Dominus exercituum, assumam te, Zorobabel, fili Salathiel, serve meus, dicit Dominus: et ponam te quasi signaculum, quia te elegi, dicit Dominus exercituum.

but thou, son of Salathiel, says the Lord of hosts, thou, Zorobabel, art my servant still; on that day I will take thee to my side, keep thee there, close as signet-ring; it is a divine choice that has fallen on thee, says the Lord of hosts.
