To the church of God that is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, in every place of theirs and ours.

Gratias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in gratia Dei, quæ data est vobis in Christo Jesu:

I give thanks to my God always for you, for the grace of God that is given you in Christ Jesus,

I give thanks to my God continually in your name for that grace of God which has been bestowed upon you in Jesus Christ;

quod in omnibus divites facti estis in illo, in omni verbo, et in omni scientia.

That in all things you are made rich in him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

that you have become rich, through him, in every way, in eloquence and in knowledge of every sort;

Sicut testimonium Christi confirmatum est in vobis:

As the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you,

so fully has the message of Christ established itself among you.

ita ut nihil vobis desit in ulla gratia, exspectantibus revelationem Domini nostri Jesu Christi,

So that nothing is wanting to you in any grace, waiting for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And now there is no gift in which you are still lacking; you have only to look forward to the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

qui et confirmabit vos usque in finem sine crimine, in die adventus Domini nostri Jesu Christi.

Who also will confirm you unto the end without crime, in the day of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He will strengthen your resolution to the last, so that no charge will lie against you on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ comes.

Fidelis Deus: per quem vocati estis in societatem filii ejus Jesu Christi Domini nostri.

God is faithful: by whom you are called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

The God, who has called you into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful to his promise.

Obsecro autem vos fratres per nomen Domini nostri Jesu Christi: ut idipsum dicatis omnes, et non sint in vobis schismata: sitis autem perfecti in eodem sensu, et in eadem sententia.

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no schisms among you; but that you be perfect in the same mind, and in the same judgment.

Only I entreat you, brethren, as you love the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, use, all of you, the same language. There must be no divisions among you; you must be restored to unity of mind and purpose.

Significatum est enim mihi de vobis fratres mei ab iis, qui sunt Chloës, quia contentiones sunt inter vos.

For it hath been signified unto me, my brethren, of you, by them that are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

The account I have of you, my brethren, from Chloe’s household, is that there are dissensions among you;

Hoc autem dico, quod unusquisque vestrum dicit: Ego quidem sum Pauli: ego autem Apollo: ego vero Cephæ: ego autem Christi.

Now this I say, that every one of you saith: I indeed am of Paul; and I am of Apollo; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

each of you, I mean, has a cry of his own, I am for Paul, I am for Apollo, I am for Cephas, I am for Christ.

Divisus est Christus? numquid Paulus crucifixus est pro vobis? aut in nomine Pauli baptizati estis?

Is Christ divided? Was Paul then crucified for you? or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

What, has Christ been divided up? Was it Paul that was crucified for you? Was it in Paul’s name that you were baptized?

Gratias ago Deo, quod neminem vestrum baptizavi, nisi Crispum et Caium:

I give God thanks, that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Caius;

Thank God I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius;

ne quis dicat quod in nomine meo baptizati estis.

Lest any should say that you were baptized in my name.

so that no one can say it was in my name you were baptized.

Baptizavi autem et Stephanæ domum: ceterum nescio si quem alium baptizaverim.

And I baptized also the household of Stephanus; besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

(Yes, and I did baptize the household of Stephanas; I do not know that I baptized anyone else.)

Non enim misit me Christus baptizare, sed evangelizare: non in sapientia verbi, ut non evacuetur crux Christi.

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not in wisdom of speech, lest the cross of Christ should be made void.

Christ did not send me to baptize; he sent me to preach the gospel; not with an orator’s cleverness, for so the cross of Christ might be robbed of its force.

Verbum enim crucis pereuntibus quidem stultitia est: iis autem qui salvi fiunt, id est nobis, Dei virtus est.

For the word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness; but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God.

To those who court their own ruin, the message of the cross is but folly; to us, who are on the way to salvation, it is the evidence of God’s power.

Scriptum est enim: Perdam sapientiam sapientium, et prudentiam prudentium reprobabo.
19
For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the prudence of the prudent I will reject.
19
So we read in scripture, I will confound the wisdom of wise men, disappoint the calculations of the prudent.
20
Ubi sapiens? ubi scriba? ubi conquisitor hujus sæculi? Nonne stultam fecit Deus sapientiam hujus mundi?

Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

What has become of the wise men, the scribes, the philosophers of this age we live in? Must we not say that God has turned our worldly wisdom to folly?
21
Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundus per sapientiam Deum: placuit Deo per stultitiam prædicationis salvos facere credentes.

For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world, by wisdom, knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of our preaching, to save them that believe.

When God shewed us his wisdom, the world, with all its wisdom, could not find its way to God; and now God would use a foolish thing, our preaching, to save those who will believe in it.
22
Quoniam et Judæi signa petunt, et Græci sapientiam quærunt:

For both the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

Here are the Jews asking for signs and wonders, here are the Greeks intent on their philosophy;

nos autem prædicamus Christum crucifixum: Judæis quidem scandalum, gentibus autem stultitiam,

But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews indeed a stumblingblock, and unto the Gentiles foolishness:

but what we preach is Christ crucified; to the Jews, a discouragement, to the Gentiles, mere folly;

ipsis autem vocatis Judæis, atque Græcis Christum Dei virtutem, et Dei sapientiam:

But unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

but to us who have been called, Jew and Gentile alike, Christ the power of God, Christ the wisdom of God.

quia quod stultum est Dei, sapientius est hominibus: et quod infirmum est Dei, fortius est hominibus.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

So much wiser than men is God’s foolishness; so much stronger than men is God’s weakness.

Videte enim vocationem vestram, fratres, quia non multi sapientes secundum carnem, non multi potentes, non multi nobiles:

For see your vocation, brethren, that there are not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble:
26
Consider, brethren, the circumstances of your own calling; not many of you are wise, in the world’s fashion, not many powerful, not many well born.
27
sed quæ stulta sunt mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat sapientes: et infirma mundi elegit Deus, ut confundat fortia:
27
But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise; and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong.
27
No, God has chosen what the world holds foolish, so as to abash the wise, God has chosen what the world holds weak, so as to abash the strong.
28
et ignobilia mundi, et contemptibilia elegit Deus, et ea quæ non sunt, ut ea quæ sunt destrueret:
28
And the base things of the world, and the things that are contemptible, hath God chosen, and things that are not, that he might bring to nought things that are:
28
God has chosen what the world holds base and contemptible, nay, has chosen what is nothing, so as to bring to nothing what is now in being;
29
ut non glorietur omnis caro in conspectu ejus.

That no flesh should glory in his sight.

no human creature was to have any ground for boasting, in the presence of God.

Ex ipso autem vos estis in Christo Jesu, qui factus est nobis sapientia a Deo, et justitia, et sanctificatio, et redemptio:

But of him are you in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption:
30
It is from him that you take your origin, through Christ Jesus, whom God gave us to be all our wisdom, our justification, our sanctification, and our atonement;
31
ut quemadmodum scriptum est: Qui gloriatur, in Domino glorietur.
31
That, as it is written: He that glorieth, may glory in the Lord.

so that the scripture might be fulfilled, If anyone boasts, let him make his boast in the Lord.
